New child in class - Raimunda's story
Description
Raimunda is from Lithuania and is starting school in England for the first time. She talks about why her family have come to England and her thoughts about going to a new school. Raimunda is quite open about how she felt and explains how she made friends. Raimunda and her new best friend Rebecca talk together about how their friendship came about. The language barrier is discussed by them both in an honest and positive way.
Classroom Ideas
Students could imagine they are moving to another country, and starting a school where they do not speak the language or know the customs. Working individually, they could write a letter to their best friend at home, laying out their fears and concerns. What are the challenges they will face and how might they feel about these? If there are any students from overseas for whom English is a new language, they could also be invited to share their experience.
As a class, students could discuss what helps people to cope with change, and also the power of friendship. Why is it so important to have a friend? Students could go on to draw up a set of criteria for what makes a good friend, and turn this into a colourful wall display for the classroom. Students could even add pictures of their friends to the display and leave positive comments for one another.
