'Law and Order' (pt 2/8) - Causing damage
Description
Two boys are cycling on a bridge over a busy motorway. They stop and spit water on to the road below. A van is seen braking sharply and nearly losing control. The boys enter a secret hideaway on private property. One of them breaks a pane of glass in a window to scare his friend. The presenter asks if the boys have broken any laws. He explains that their parents could be fined for them ‘skiving off’ school. He also points out that you can be charged by the police for smashing windows. He leaves the viewers to decide whether spitting water off a motorway bridge is against the law.

Classroom Ideas
Before watching the clip, students could be told that they will see a number of instances of irresponsible behaviour, and that they should write down what these are and rank them on a basis of personal safety as follows: ‘not very serious, ‘fairly serious’ or ‘extremely serious’.
After watching the clip, students could discuss how they marked each example and if they found them all. More obscure examples may include not telling an adult where they are going or hanging over the edge of a bridge. Students could go on to write a ‘worst case scenario’ for the outcome of each irresponsible act and discuss these as a group.
