My identity - being a young news reporter
Description
Lexie lives in Birmingham. She and her friend Navika are taking part in media training for an online news service produced by and aimed specifically at schoolchildren. Lexie and Navika are close friends and enjoy writing songs and singing. Both are learning to present video reports. We see them investigating a combined heat and power scheme that serves some of Birmingham’s biggest buildings. Lexie’s Mum feels her daughter has become more confident and articulate as a result of her reporter training.
Classroom Ideas
Working in small groups, students could share information about their hobbies; what these entail, how long they have been doing them for, and why they enjoy these. If students cannot think of a particular hobby, they could consider something they are interested in, or a responsibility they have at home. Invite some feedback from the groups and ask if anyone has learned something about another student that they didn’t know, or were surprised by.
In their groups again, students could consider how they have developed as a person as a result of their hobby. Some suggestions could be collected from the groups, and students could reflect upon the benefits of having a hobby or interest. Students could discuss how their hobbies and interests help to form their identity.
