| Tuesday, 10 September, 2002, 21:11 GMT 22:11 UK Bury 1-0 Stoke Bury provided a Worthington Cup shock as they defeated First Division Stoke at Gigg Lane. A brilliant diving header from Jamie Stuart after 56 minutes was enough for the Shakers as the visitors finished with 10 men after Brynjar Gunnarsson was dismissed for a clumsy challenge on Michael Nelson. Stoke should have taken the lead within two minutes, but Sergi Shtaniuk's effort was cleared off the line. The win could have been more handsome for Bury as Danny Swailes' header hit the crossbar and Terry Dunfield had an effort cleared off the goalline. Bury: Garner, Woodthorpe, Nelson, Swailes, Unsworth, Clegg, Forrest, Dunfield, Stuart, Abbott, Newby. Subs: Preece, Billy, Redmond, O'Shaughnessy, George. Stoke: Cutler, Thomas, Handyside, Shtanuk, Clarke, Gudjonsson, Gunnarsson, O'Connor, Commons, Cooke, Iwelumo. Subs: Hoekstra, Viander, Goodfellow, Henry, Vandeurzen. Referee: G Salisbury (Lancashire). |
