| Wednesday, 11 September, 2002, 21:29 GMT 22:29 UK Preston 2-1 Scunthorpe (after extra time) Preston striker Ricardo Fuller put Preston through to the second round of the Worthington Cup with a goal two minutes from the end of extra time against plucky Scunthorpe. With the score deadlocked at 1-1 after normal time, the game was heading for penalties until substitute Fuller took advantage of a defensive mix-up to send the hosts through. Scunthorpe had taken a shock early lead through veteran striker Steve Torpey, who poked home after goalkeeper David Lucas could only parry a Martin Carruthers shot in the 10th minute. Preston drew level 12 minutes later through Graham Alexander's controversial penalty. Iron defender Nathan Stanton seemed to make minimal contact with Lilywhites striker Richard Cresswell. But the former Sheffield Wednesday striker took a tumble and Scotland international Alexander smashed home the resulting spot-kick. Preston: Lucas, Alexander, Edwards, Lucketti, Broomes, McKenna, Etuhu, Keane, Lewis, Healy, Cresswell. Subs: Moilanen, Rankine, Jackson, Cartwright, Fuller. Scunthorpe: Evans, Wright, Dawson, Stanton, Jackson, Sparrow, Graves, Calvo-Garcia, Brough, Torpey, Carruthers. Subs: McCombe, Barwick, Ryan, Lee Ridley, Parton. Referee: A Bates (Staffordshire). |
