| Tuesday, 10 September, 2002, 21:25 GMT 22:25 UK Port Vale 0-2 Crewe Two goals by Rodney Jack and an inspirational display from youngster David Vaughan eased Crewe into the second round of the Worthington Cup with a win at Port Vale. Vale could not cope with Wales Under-21 international Vaughan, whose surging runs set up both Jack's goals in a three-minute spell. Vaughan mesmerised Michael Walsh before laying on an 18-yard drive for Jack in the 17th minute and then sent the St Vincent international away to clip in his second goal. Vale had started brightly against their local rivals and Stephen McPhee almost gave them a 13th-minute lead when thwarted by goalkeeper Clayton Ince. But the goals completely changed the complexion of the game as Crewe took charge with their neat passing game. Vale were denied a penalty when substitute Ian Armstrong was tripped by Efe Sodje in the 72nd minute, but Crewe were otherwise untroubled in the second half. Port Vale: Goodlad, Carragher, Brightwell, Walsh, Collins, McCarthy, Boyd, Cummins, Bridge-Wilkinson, Brooker, McPhee. Subs: Delaney, Armstrong, Ingram, Rowland, Angell. Crewe: Ince, McCready, Vaughan, Sodje, Walker, Sorvel, Lunt, Brammer, Jack, Miles, Little. Subs: Bankole, Bell, Rix, Jones, Morris. Referee: G Laws (Tyne & Wear). |
