| Wednesday, 11 September, 2002, 21:39 GMT 22:39 UK Swindon 1-2 Wycombe (after extra time) Wycombe captain Paul McCarthy headed the Chairboys into the second round of the Worthington Cup with a dramatic extra-time winner to defeat Swindon. Skipper McCarthy bagged his second goal of the season 19 minutes into extra time as Wycombe recorded their first ever win at the County Ground. The Irishman nodded the ball past Swindon goalkeeper Bart Griemink from close range after Wanderers substitute Keith Ryan had crossed the ball into his path at the back post. The game seemed to be heading for a penalty shoot-out after Swindon defender Adam Willis had scored only the second goal of his career to rule out Richard Harris' opener. Substitute Harris put Wycombe in front less than 66 seconds into extra-time when he planted a bullet header passed Griemink after the Swindon keeper had only parried Steve Brown's close-range shot. But Wycombe's lead lasted just nine minutes before centre-back Willis bundled Swindon level from close-range after Wycombe keeper Frank Talia had spilled Andy Gurney's free-kick. Swindon: Griemink, Gurney, Willis, Heywood, Duke, Hewlett, Miglioranzi, Robinson, Davis, Parkin, Sabin. Subs: Farr, Edds, Dykes, Reeves, Young. Wycombe: Talia, Rogers, McCarthy, Thomson, Vinnicombe, Currie, Bulman, Simpson, Roberts, Faulconbridge, Devine. Subs: Williams, Brown, Ryan, Harris, Johnson. Referee: P Armstrong (Berkshire). |
