| Tuesday, 10 September, 2002, 21:33 GMT 22:33 UK Grimsby 0-1 Chesterfield (after extra time) Super-sub Mark Allott struck in extra-time to earn Chesterfield a shock victory over Grimsby in the first round of the Worthington Cup at Blundell Park. Chesterfield goalkeeper Carl Muggleton produced a number of fine saves to deny Grimsby in normal time. Stacy Coldicott, Stuart Campbell, Terry Cooke and Steve Kabba were all foiled by Muggleton before opposite number Danny Coyne was called into action for the first time to keep out Marcus Ebdon's drive. Muggleton also denied Paul Robinson before the woodwork prevented Alan Pouton from giving Grimsby a deserved lead. Chesterfield responded and Coyne did well to parry Jamie Burt's effort, then the visitors hit the woodwork themselves through Steve Payne. The winner came 13 seconds into stoppage time with Allott heading home Gareth Davies' cross. Grimsby: Coyne, McDermott, Groves, Chettle, Gallimore, Cooke, Coldicott, Pouton, Campbell, Kabba, Robinson. Subs: Rowan, Allaway, Mansaram, Ward, Raven. Chesterfield: Muggleton, Dawson, Howson, Payne, Davies, Booty, Ebdon, Rushbury, Burt, Reeves, Brandon. Subs: Richmond, Allott, Rowland, Warne, Richardson. Referee: A Kaye (W Yorkshire). |
