| Tuesday, 10 September, 2002, 21:06 GMT 22:06 UK Rotherham 3-1 Carlisle Rotherham had to wait until the closing moments but finally made sure of a place in the second round of the Worthington Cup with victory over Carlisle at Millmoor. The Division One side were on top for most of the match but struggled to make their advantage tell. Chris Swailes tested visiting goalkeeper Danny Naisbitt with a left-foot shot after 17 minutes, but Carlisle looked comfortable throughout the first half. Increased pressure from the hosts after the break paid off after 50 minutes when Andy Monkhouse unleashed a left-foot strike which flew past Naisbitt. Richie Barker and John Mullin also went close before a Mark Robins' header looked to have wrapped up the win for the Robins. But the visitors gave themselves hope when Brendan McGill pulled a goal back after 83 minutes with a right-foot shot into the top corner. And it was stoppage time before Paul Warne made the game safe for Rotherham with a clinical strike. Rotherham: Pollitt, Scott, Beech, McIntosh, Swailes, Mullin, Daws, Monkhouse, Sedgwick, Robins, Richard Barker. Subs: Gray, Hurst, Lee, Warne, Hudson. Carlisle: Naisbitt, Birch, Murphy, Whitehead, Kelly, Summerbell, Galloway, Molloy, McGill, Nixon, Wake. Subs: Andrews, Jack, Hamilton, Lynn, Byrne. Referee: M Dean (Wirral) |
