| Monday, 9 September, 2002, 08:56 GMT 09:56 UK Brentford edge out Cherries (Brentford win 4-2 on penalties AET) Goalkeeper Paul Smith was the hero as Brentford won on penalties against Bournemouth to progress in the Worthington Cup after the game had ended 3-3 after extra time. Smith saved spot-kicks from Bournemouth captain Carl Fletcher and substitute James Hayter to put Brentford into the second round. Bournemouth midfielder Wade Elliott had already missed a penalty in normal time to compound the Cherries' misery. Top scorer Rowan Vine came off the bench to score his fourth goal of the season for the Bees to make it 3-3 after two goals from Danny Thomas and one from Alan Connell had put the hosts in the driving seat as they led 3-1 after 45 minutes. Kevin O'Connor scored twice from the spot prior to Vine's leveller for Brentford. Bournemouth: Tardif, Broadhurst, Purches, Maher, Tindall, Elliott, Carl Fletcher, Browning, Holmes, Connell, Thomas.
