| Monday, 9 September, 2002, 09:08 GMT 10:08 UK Mansfield 1-3 Derby Ten-man Mansfield made First Division neighbours Derby fight all the way before the Rams finally booked their passage into the second round of the Worthington Cup. Mansfield, beaten in their previous four games, were left with a mountain to climb after young skipper Lee Williamson, once on Derby's books, was sent off for a two-footed tackle on Adam Bolder inside the first 90 seconds. However, Mansfield stunned Derby six minutes later with their first goal in 372 minutes of football. The Rams failed to clear Mansfield's first corner and Iyseden Christie turned the ball back in for Neil Moore to find the net off the underside of the bar for his first goal for the club. The celebrations were silenced within two minutes as Lee Morris was left unmarked at the near post to turn in a low Malcolm Christie cross from four yards for the equaliser. Mansfield keeper Kevin Pilkington did have to save a header from Branko Strupar, the Belgian striker limping off shortly after. But, otherwise the keeper was rarely tested in the first half as Mansfield defended comfortably. Derby began the second half in confident fashion but on a rare Mansfield attack, Derby's defence held their breath as Chris Riggott appeared to bring down Iyseden Christie in the box with the ball nowhere near. But Mr Danson was unimpressed and waved play on. Mansfield's brave resistance was finally ended when they were pierced by Christie 19 minutes from time. Paul Boertien's low cross from the left found Christie who was on hand to expertly steer his finish home. And they grabbed a third as added insurance just seven minutes later as a high Morris cross was met by substitute Ian Evatt's head right in front of goal. Pilkington got a hand to it but couldn't prevent it crossing the line. Mansfield: Pilkington, Reddington, Moore, Clark, Clarke, MacKenzie, Corden, Williamson, Disley, Lawrence, Christie.
