Criminal connections and lucrative underworld deals drive Lenny Murdoch. He’s not interested in making friends – friendships make you weak.
Family is important to Lenny, but he’s managed to push away those he loves through his stubborn, controlling nature. He’s been married twice, Mary, whom he had killed for double-crossing him, and then trophy wife, Lydia. He has four children – Rory, Ewan, Amber and Alex. Rory turned his back on Lenny when he refused to accept he was gay and has since committed suicide. Ewan died falling from scaffolding during an argument with his father and Lenny’s daughter Amber, was imprisoned for murdering Lenny’s criminal associate, McCabe.
With Amber’s release from prison and Lydia’s return from Spain, Lenny had a family around him once more but things weren’t all plan sailing as he struggled with Lydia’s request that he retire from crime.
The return of Rick Harper gave Lenny an excuse to fall back into his old ways and he enjoyed riling him up. But things took a turn for the worst when Rick went after Lenny’s Achilles’ heel – Lydia. Rick took her hostage and while Alex and Lenny desperately sought for her, they arrived moments after Frankie Roth murdered Rick. Alex and Lenny disposed of the body and Lenny felt it was all behind him, until Lydia blamed him for her traumatic ordeal.
With his love life in tatters, Lenny’s world was rocked once more when he was arrested for the murder of Rick Harper. Meaning someone in the family has loose lips. At first Lenny turned his attention to Annie and he forced Alex to kill her. But Lenny was horrified when he was dealt the double blow of realising that Alex had faked Annie’s death and that Lydia was the one who grassed him to the cops. Lenny and Lydia had the ultimate stand-off only for Lenny to realise that he can never kill the love of his life.
When Lenny discovered Alex and Lydia’s affair, he obviously couldn’t let things slide. Lenny arranged to kill Alex but, tragically, Lenny murdered Lydia thinking it was Alex coming through the door. When Amber got a confession out of Lenny she fled Shieldinch with Charlotte, horrified that Lenny could kill her mother.
Soon after, his son Rory returned on a mission to wreak revenge on Lenny. But Lenny managed to make amends with Rory and the pair have been working together in Murdoch Enterprises, with Lenny still determined to manage the more legitimate side of the business. But can Lenny keep his promise to Lydia or will he find himself getting his hands dirty once again?
