Bristol Rovers striker Nathan Ellington has joined Wigan for a club record fee of �1.2m.

The 20-year-old, who has scored 21 goals this season, came to prominence in January when he scored a hat-trick against Premiership Derby County in Rovers' 3-1 FA Cup victory at Pride Park.

He made a total of 138 appearances for the Pirates, scoring 44 goals and the Latics fought off interest from several other clubs to secure his signature.

"We're very excited to bring Nathan to the JJB Stadium. We've been very impressed with him and his record speaks for itself," Wigan boss Paul Jewell told the club's website.

"I am looking to improve the side going forward and see Nathan as an important addition to the squad.

Meanwhile, Bristol Rovers have signed Tottenham youngster Ciaran Toner on a month's loan.

The 20-year-old midfielder has just returned from international duty in Liechtenstein.
