| Thursday, 28 March, 2002, 11:50 GMT Pompey seal Howe deal Bournemouth defender Eddie Howe has completed his move to Portsmouth for 400,000. The 24-year-old centre-back had a medical at Fratton Park just hours before Thursday's transfer deadline. Howe, who turned down moves to Oldham and Wigan during the last year, becomes new Pompey boss Harry Redknapp's first signing. "He's a quality player, and one who I think can rack up a number of games for this club over the next few years," Redknapp told BBC Radio Solent. Howe added: "It's dream move, to such a big club, it didn't take me too long to make up my mind. "I want to play in the Premeirship and I think I can do that at Portsmouth. I'm sorry to leave Bournemouth at this time, but I think the money will be very useful to them." Howe's departure is a blow to the Cherries as they battle to avoid relegation from the Second Division. "He was a loyal servant to the club, but he's wanted to play at a higher level for some time," Bournemouth chairman Tony Swaisland. "He was keen to go to Portsmouth, and we did not want to stand in his way." Howe will now team up again with his half-brother, striker Steve Lovell, who joined Pompey from Bournemouth for 250,000 in 1999. |
