| Sunday, 9 February, 2003, 14:45 GMT Redknapp joy at win ![]() Redknapp's Portsmouth are two points clear Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp believes his side's goalscoring capabilities saw them fend off a Derby fightback and earn a vital win. Pompey were pegged back to 3-2 by the Rams before emerging comfortable 6-2 victors. "We could have scored six or seven in that first half but then (Giorgi) Kinkladze was on fire after the break and at 3-2 it looked a bit dodgy," said Redknapp.
"But I always felt we were going to score goals because we had a very attacking team out on the pitch and I thought we were deserved winners in the end." Portsmouth's victory proved crucial as automatic promotion rivals Leicester also won. Leicester beat Walsall 4-1 to stay within two points of Redknapp's table-toppers. Foxes boss Micky Adams said: "This could be a big result to be honest. "I don't think we have been as convincing away from home, but the important thing is we keep winning.
"I don't worry about what other teams are doing. If we win all our games nobody else can catch us." Sheffield United's chances of catching Leicester were dealt a blow when they let a two-goal lead slip to Ipswich. Ipswich also had striker Pablo Counago sent off, but still managed to emerge 3-2 winners. "I am absolutely distraught," said Blades boss Neil Warnock. "We've lost a game that professionally we should have won. "That's what disappoints me.
"When we scored our second goal our players thought it was the end of the game. You do that at your peril." Nottingham Forest moved one step closer to securing a play-off berth with a 2-1 win against Liverpool's FA Cup conquerors Crystal Palace. "It might have not been our most fluid performance but it was an excellent team effort," said Forest boss Paul Hart. "We showed a lot of grit and determination because make no mistake about it, Palace are a very good side. "The players did not know the other results before they went out for the game but all I was concerned about was that they were in the right frame of mind - and they were." |
