| Tuesday, 11 February, 2003, 23:02 GMT Wigan 0-0 Cheltenham Bottom-of-the-table Cheltenham upset the form book with a gallant point in a goalless stalemate against leaders Wigan. The home side were unable to break the visitors' stubborn resistance as they were restricted to a series of half-chances. Cheltenham recorded just two attempts on goal throughout the game and were happy to defend in numbers and rely on the break. They also rode their luck, especially in a frantic finale as the home side poured forward in search of the winner. A brilliant double save from goalkeeper Steve Book denied Jason De Vos and Nathan Elllington and in the dying seconds, Ellington saw his cheeky back-heel hacked off the line. Cheltenham's new signing Grant McCann was the only player booked, towards the end of the contest for time-wasting. Wigan's new recruit Jimmy Bullard made his debut after his switch from Peterborough but was unable to inspire his side to victory. Wigan: Filan, Eaden, Jackson, De Vos, Kennedy, Teale, Mitchell, Dinning, Bullard, Ellington, Liddell. Subs: Yeomans, Roberts, McMillan, Jarrett, Breckin. Cheltenham: Book, Griffin, Brough, Mike Duff, Victory, Devaney, Milton, Finnigan, McCann, Alsop, Spencer. Subs: Yates, Naylor, Higgs, Shane Duff, Brown. Referee: M Warren (W Midlands). |
