| Tuesday, 18 February, 2003, 17:08 GMT Wigan look to strengthen Manager Paul Jewell will enter the transfer market again to keep Wigan out in front in the Division Two title race. Jewell recently bought midfielder Jimmy Bullard from Peterborough United. But having let Scott Green go to Wrexham, Ged Brannan join Dunfermline on loan and released Lee Ashcroft then Jewell has seen his first-team squad reduced to 18.
That means reinforcements are expected to arrive at the JJB Stadium ahead of next month's transfer deadline. Jewell said: "There are certain players I'd like to bring to the football club, no doubt about that. "But it's not always as straightforward as that. The price tends to go up a fair bit when a club hears that Wigan are interested. "The days of throwing silly money at signings are long gone here. "We've got the loan market to exploit, as well as permanent signings. "Although we're not in any immediate rush, if we suddenly need to go for someone we have our minds set on certain people and are ready to act quickly to see if we can get them in," he told the club's website. |
