Banksy
In my (short!) round-up of famous Bristolians I didn't mention somebody who has been drawing crowds here all summer. This was partly because I wasn't sure how internationally well-known this anonymous graffiti artist was.
Well, the 'Banksy Homecoming' exhibition at Bristol Museum has settled that question. It has been an incredible success with over 250,000 people visiting it since June. People have been queuing for up to four hours – you can see from this photo I took early on a weekday morning here.
Who is Banksy? Nobody knows his real identity and that’s part of his appeal. He has become famous for creating strange images in odd (and often illegal) places. Here is an example from a wall in Bristol near the exhibition.

According to his Wikipedia entry Banksy creates ‘satirical pieces of art on topics such as politics, culture, and ethics’. Local councils – on whose property he often creates these ‘artworks’ - see this differently. They describe his work as vandalism.
I have big reservations about the Banksy phenomenon. Some of his work is imaginative and amusing but he also inspires thousands of kids to go out with a spray cans and paint ugly tags on public space. Perhaps they dream of one day becoming a favourite of Hollywood stars as Banksy has become.
What do you think?
Vocabulary
drawing - attracting
vandalism - destruction of property for pleasure
tag - (in this context) identifying visual symbol or logo used by the graffiti artist
amusing - mildly funny

hi Kieran, this phenomenon reminds me of Pasquino who used to write on the walls of Rome his rebellion against the power of the Pope,of course anonymously. I can agree with graffiti, only if they convey a real message, not when they are obscene not when the authors scribble, scratch or carve the walls. maione
Hi, Great and controversial post. This kind of art can be nice when is painted in the right place, personally I hate seeing my neighborhood painted with meaningless symbols that make the city dirty,of course for me, for them it may be art.
Hi,Kieran! After BANKSY has proved himself as great artist,I think he should reveal his identity and apologize publicly to whom he affected by his graffity.
Hello Kieran, thank you for sharing about Banksy with us. In my opinion, he seems to be a rebel who paints the bitter reality which is most of the time not acceptable just because it's true. Still with the subject of the art of painting, I would like to side track a bit which is all about 3D art by Edger Muller, this man is famous for painting 3d pictures on streets and it's just unbelieveable at first. Seeing his art in an email, I didn't believe it first and I googled for his work and found videos of him painting on the street. I'm sure you will be amazed too. Here's the link to share with you http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/top-stories/2009/02/24/pictures-artist-s-amazing-illusion-street-art-115875-21147958/.All the best, Naheed
Hello Kieran, Banksy's graffiti is quite impressive but sometime I feel its unwanted. Becasue by drawing paintings and by writing something on street walls that makes them untidy. It is considered as a form of art and here in Pakistan its a common thing. People write things on the walls and make drawings on it and write slogans for the political party leaders which is so awkward. The art is good but drawing it on public places is not a good idea. The walls must be kept neat and clean. Have a nice weekend!. Bye.
Kieran, you are so clever person.I like the way you comunicate with us.You induce our thinking. At firs glance, adults whose property was written "artworks"can describe it as vandalism. But in the next ten years it could be changed. Most majority would say:"What a beautiful natural gift, what a perfection...We adore it." People would like to be chosen to hold "artwork"on the wall. We are aware that our society has made people who like only to spend money day in day out. They became the shopping adicted. They are fed up with daily routhine. They need something different, unique. Icouldn't say it's vandalism. It's a "new arrivals",better to say new arrivals has come. How can you cope with it,depands how old are you, your level of education, your possibility of looking of wider picture. What a pitty,my English is low level.I would like to tell you much more.Nevertheless,I have a plenty of time to improve my English. My best regards to you and all bloggers.
Hi Kieran! It's very good that you write posts, because Asha has disappeared. About the Banky issue...I have seen some of his/her picture on internet and I think that some of them are really good, but this doesn't means that he/she can write whereever he/she wants. The street are to all the citizens and you can not do what you want. There are some rules that people should follow in benefits of all. Best wishes.
Hello, Kieran! I didn't know Banksy's work. I did a short research to see more of his work and to learn about the stencil technique. He has interesting pieces and I think that what he does is not pure vandalism. But I also think that his work should always stay on legal surfaces. Graffiti is vandalism when in the form of ugly tags painted illegaly, but can become street art when in the form of refined drawings. That's why there are social programs here to help young graffiters embellish the city, instead of making it ugly. Nice topic. Regards.
Hello Kieran! The graffiti art is seen on the walls of some schools and NGO organizations here. It´s strongly related with and aware of the community social issues. Apart from that, the graffiti art it´s also a way to keep kids away from marginality, as it shows them what art really is. However, there are a minority who still insist on calling their vandalism acts as artworks, and in this way they contribute to the city visual pollution. Needlees to say their work can´t be compared to Banksy. Have a nice weekend, Ana Paula.

I feel Banksy has no right to attack public property with his so-called artworks. An artist tag does not really make him free from his social responsibilities. Suppose you have a nice bungalow and on waking up one morning, find somebody's artwork plastered all over the outside walls. Your walls were used to showcase somebody's talent. Your property gets damaged. How would that make you feel? Even worse , as a celebrity he is inspiring young kids to follow his example.
Mostly there are very boring walls or building parts on a house or building. In that case a graphity artist can help to make it more interesting. Certainly when they have a message too. But only colour and form can make things more beautiful. A good artist should have an eye not only for his message, but also for the result in the whole of the building concept. He ought to improve, not to damage.
Thanks for all your contributions. This blog has now closed and can no longer accept new comments.
