Comments/Verb Question

Comments – Many thanks to Henrique, Boska, Sara, Ivan, Soroush, Vitaliy, and Maione for a fantastic response to my balloon fiesta and Mudd posts.

I listened to the Primus song - not really my cup of tea though very distinctive in its way. And well done, again, to Naheed for pointing the earlier origin of the phrase.

Cheikh Vall – Let me have a go at pronouncing your name. Is it similar to Sheik (as in the Arabic honorific term) and Vall like ball? Or like cal?

Mud is not used to describe pronunciation but it can be used when something is unclear – to muddy the facts, for example.

Vitalily -A very interesting point you make about the importance of ‘virtual communities’. I think we are all benefitting from the opportunity to share our interests with people across the world, though there can, of course, be a downside – see here http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/8180115.stm.

James Wu– James, you’re quite right. I hadn’t noticed I’d written ‘Does know anyone?’ when I meant ‘Does anyone know?’ These 'weird' mistakes happen sometimes - the keyboard equivalent of a ‘slip of the tongue’.

Ang – delighted you enjoyed the joke. I try to put a new joke or a teaser in each post. In the case of the jokes ‘new’ usually means ‘very old’!

Today I’ll finish with a two-part question to think about:
a) What are the ten most used verbs in English?
b) What do they have in common?

No googling this one please – see if you can work it out without going to a source.

a) The 10 most commonly used English verbs should be: do, go, be, make, get, say, have, come, see and take. b) They are all irregular verbs i.e. they don't take -ed or -d in past and past participle forms. They change altogether or sometimes don't change at all.

Oh, it is great to have this site for studying English. I'd like to learn English but I do not have many opportunities to communicate and practice. I enjoyed your post and hope to see more jokes and interesting entries from you.

Hi Kieran! OK, no googling this time! Promise :) Some of the verbs I guess are: be, get, take, put, do, have, go, come, seem, ...; and what comes to my mind first is that they all are one syllable words, and most of them can be used with several adverbs to have different meanings. Have a nice day.

Kieran, what a challenge to me.I've obeyed you.I didn't googling and I am writing by heart. Here is my list of most used verbs in Serbia. 1. (TO DO) What are you doing? Not much. 2.(GET)Have you got a qiut from job? 3.(EARN)How much you earn? 4.(SPEND)Where did you spend your holiday? b.All verbs have in common:unemployed. Finally,I can say:What a beautiful life. All the best to you ,and all blogers.

Dear Kieran, in Italy we always use English verbs, especially linked with yhe world of sport, fitness or economy. The top ten are; to train,to play,to run,to walk,to eat ,to dance,to change, to earn,to work,to surf,,,the net of course. Do you agree with me? bye bye for now Maione

Hi Kieran, The link that you provided on virtual communities got my attention to ponder about the pros and cons on it. So far I have a perception that the virtual communities has an advantage of linking people from different locations, however, it also has some disadvantage to some extend depends on the person on how is he/she making use of it. Of course, I would agree to archbishop criticism as it is acceptable to certain extend, and the person would get affected when transient relationship broken down. Most of the people see the quantities on number of person do they have virtual contact instead of their quality. Some people have their contact going hundreds and thousands, but in truth are do they really keep in touch with everyone in their contact list, and will it be possible at all to find out what are they up to. At least, in my opinion, I don’t believe in getting the acquaintance to someone who does not know personally, even if we get to know but it is impossible to have that much big circle for anyone unless they do not have other job just finding new people. Moreover, it will not give as good time as we spend personally with our friends as we end up just wasting time by no means get to know the real side of those people. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Having said that, I should say it has lot of advantage as it allows us to have touch with our friends whom we know personally. Even I know someone who had find their partner online. Of course, blog like the one we have in the BBC helps to learn as well to know the culture and people around the world. Here we not losing anything but we get some info though we actively participate only for short period. ------------------------------------------------------------- On the summation, any technological advancement has its own pros and cons that depend on the way we handle it. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- On the question part, I could not think much about the most used verb in English, and I just want to take a shot in the dark , here is the list: Have, Be, say, get, do Note: “-----------------“ is a Paragraph separator”, Thanks

Hi!Kieran. You are right in my first name but the second option in my last name is the correct one VALL like CAL. The most used verbes are mmm i think BE and HAVE and they are both auxiliary.

Hi Kieran, it's nice to find this site to learn English. Answer to your question, i guess: a)be,come,go,put, take, have, get,do,talk, think b)they're all one vowel word

Hello Kieran, I think most used verbs in English are go, make, take, have, do, put, come, look, say and tell. These are action verbs. Most of the time these verbs go with proposition.

Thanks for all your contributions. This blog has now closed and can no longer accept new comments.
