Dear Ana Paula,
If anyone is going to jump in feet first with a presentation, it would be you! You could do one on of your favorite directors or films perhaps. Video it on your webcam and post it up at BBC LE! I hope the FCE class is going well! By the way, I thought of you in my DVD shop the other day and bought a copy of “City of Men”!
Dear Leila,
I completely agree with you about how it is people that are evil not business. What I’m thinking a lot about these days is whether the language we use in life effects the way we think and therefore the way we act. Do the people start behaving as if business is a battlefield because of the vocabulary they use… George Lakoff, a famous linguistic psychologist seems to think so. Also just look at how language is being used in the US elections… the speech writers for these guys are very much aware of the metaphors and imagery they use. You are probably also aware of NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) and how that is used in business to oil the cogs as they say…
Dear Naheed,
You’re absolutely right about how important it is to really know the subject of your presentation. This helps planning a lot and also, of course, your delivery. You how they say you should structure a presentation? It’s a simple 3 step procedure: 1) Say what you are going to say 2) Say it 3) Say what you said!
Dear Fred and YPW,
Glad to hear you’re picking up lots of cool phrases! Good luck with the FCE!
Dear Mauricio,
Thank you for your kind words. I too am pleased that you are finding the blog to be a useful resource! What really pleases me is your appreciation of my method (to help turn you into your own teachers ie. To help you develop even more learner autonomy!!)
Dear Fatima,
Welcome! I’d really like to learn a little bit more about where you are from as I’m interested in the Caucasus region!
Dear Thienloi,
I just loved your creative definition!!! Keep the ideas flowing!!

Take care everyone!

Hi Simon! Thanks for your kind reply :-). My FCE classes are going well. Right now I´m focusing my studies on my weak points, key word tranformation and open cloze. Moreover, I´m just feeling a bit nervous because the day of the exame is very close, but I reckon everybody feels like that :-). Anyway, I´m happy to know you remembered me when you bought a copy of City of Men. This film is very interesting. What did you think about this film? Did you like it? Simon your ideas are flowing indeed! Well, I´ll try to put the video idea in practise :-). By the way, could I drop few words to Fred, please? I thank you in advance :-). Hi Fred! Nice to meet you. I´m glad to know you want to take the FCE. You can find me and other friends from the blog area on the BBC Learning English Facebook group. I hope I can see you there :-). Best wihses to you all, Ana Paula.

I am very happy to have your reply. I really learn much from you. Thanks.

Nice to meet you all...It is really a thrilling sensation to see my name on this page. Dear Simon Today I went to a job interview at BHP billiton, a british company and it reminded me of you....By the way, do you know this company???I'd love to have thw opportunity to be in london. Can you get me some way of practice speaking.....??? see ya

Simon you wrote: ”What I’m thinking a lot about these days is whether the language we use in life effects the way we think and therefore the way we act.” In my opinion it is precisely so. People openly talk about nerd humor. It apparently means that one is loud to be offensive and insulting. This is the reason, why in my opinion we should be careful what sort of language we use. What maybe funny to me, maybe distasteful to others. The reason why I personally keep coming back to this site is that the messages published here give pleasure or they are tutorial. I can´t be bothered to waste my time with rubbish or otherwise hostile writings. All and all, many thanks to all us (and in particularly to BBC LE) that this site is so good and classy.

Hi Simon, I also agree with you that the language we use in life effects the way we think. As each word has its own energy level like when we say 'i love you' or 'thankyou' these words have high level of energy and when we say 'i hate you' it has low level of energy so basically we have to add up the amount of energy to keep the balance of the universe. Thats how we all are participating in the balance of the universe. I think i've added little bit in it -:). See ya, Mahjabeen

Dear Simon, it's the first time I write in this blog. I'm very keen on English and languages in general, and it's has been some time that I'm trying to refresh and revise my English by reading books, articles or by listening to cds during my way to work in my car. Actually, I think that this is not completely effective for me, because there's something missing. It's by practicing that words and grammar are really fixed for a long time. Therefore I think that this blog could be helpful for me to practice, not only in readig but also in writing. I would also be grateful to receive some tips about "how to learn" new words or maybe "how to get the most" from reading and listening, in order to be international! tahnk you, byee

Hello Simon, I have been reading your articles with great interest for two months, but actually writing is the last thing I always do. And it is the worth and simply worthless to speak about. I prefer listening from all activities in my English language courses, especially listening songs. But it is not very effective. I am lazy student, very, very lazy. So that is good idea to use Skype and not to worry about perfect grammar and spelling mistakes.

Hi, I came back to the blog. I see that Linda is writing more often now. What happended with you? The month is near to finish. here we are enjoying good weather because of spring, a little windy as always in this season.

Hi Simon, How you doing? This is the first time that I leave a comment here in your page, I really appreciate your approach to teach English, you know, turn the student into their own teachers. It's a great idea, and I was wondering Why do others teachers do not think the same way? The other thing that catch my attention was your tips to encourage the students to pay attention on how the native speakers use the language for yourself. I totally agree with you, this is one of the best way to improve our language skills and to achieve a natural use of the language. I have to say, your advices has been a great asset to me, keep up the good work! Look forward your next entry! Before I leave though, I have a question, as a teacher What would be your tips for students Who want to improve their pronunciation? What kind of work we have to do to improve our pronunciation? Have a great weekend, By for now Bruno Oliveira

Hi Simon. Is there any chance to watch one of your presentations on facebook? You know what...I don't know if this happens to other students but reading blogs and comments, it's disorienting sometimes when I try not to imagine you all as characters. So that when I see or hear the person's image and voice respectively, it brings a lot of emotion. It's like those films that a character from cartoon is transformed into real person. Oh, I hope this isn't a nonsence for you... I'm also enjoying so much your blogs, Simon. You are a very nice teacher.

Hi,everybody.I'm so glad to be here by chance. What a wonderful place for studiing english.I'll always come here to improve my english level, also wish to make friends with someone.Dear Simon,I appreciate hard work to help students all over the world to master using english, without complaint but persistant.I'm so desired to learn english well that i'll work at an international company.By now,i'm sicked in oral and listening english what are very important for one to communicate fruquently.May be there is no appropriate environment for me to practise, but this isn't the cause. If you have the will completely, you could receive whatever you need, after all that it's a imformation age now,and you can get most resouce from the internet. So,i greet you first and i'll come back frequently.Expect your advising and thank you in advance.

Thanks for all your contributions. This blog has now closed and can no longer accept new comments.
