The aim of this homework was to encourage you to develop your skills of noticing language in use. This will help you learn how to use a new or important word and become more fluent more easily. Again if you think and remember in chunks and collocations, you will ease the amount of work your brain and memory has to do! My purpose here in this post is to give you an example of ways in which you can record words in your vocabulary books which will also help your memory! (If you don’t have a vocab book, I suggest you get one!). The way I have written the collocations and examples of use above is an example of a way you could record collocations in your vocabulary books! This is particularly useful if your are often using a certain word at work or in your studies.

Hi Simon! People are panicking because all the news about the financial crisis. The dollar quotation has been going up recently and in São Paulo the stock market closed down sharply today. Moreover, rumors had been spread that automobile companies were giving holidays to all their employees because the crisis had already affected their production. Meanwhile G7 pledged action to tackle the world econimic crisis after the international turmoil in the stock markets. I picked some phrases from BBC news in order to do my homework. The three verbs are: to tackle: 'After meeting in Washington, G7 finance ministers said they would take "decisive action and use all available tools" to tackle the world economic crisis.'; to fight: ' But he issued a stark warning against countries acting unilaterally to fight the crisis, referring to recent isolated moves by certain European Union member countries.'; to take an action: 'IMF takes action to stem crisis.' The two adjectives: financial/ economical/ economic crisis: financial: 'The scheme, which was used during the Asian financial crisis in 1997, will help speed up approval of loans.'; economic: 'It may take years to resolve the global economic crisis, according to Robert Rubin, the US Treasury Secretary.' Hey Simon guess what? I´ve just come to know that one of the films of Ekimi festival, Lemon Tree, is on some São Paulo´s cinemas. I intend to see this film on Sunday. Have a nice weekend, Ana Paula.

Hello Simon, collocations have always been an important part of my English learning. These days the most talked about crisis are the global financial crisis. I find it very strange at times that the crisis has left not a single country being affected by it, how globally we are connect to each other. Recently I came to know from the news that to ease off the crisis in Pakistan, The State Bank Of Pakistan has decreased the reserve asset ratio of the commercial banks by 1%. The political crisis hadn't freed us yet and now the ongoing financial crisis. Simon, your homeworks are always very interesting and challenging and on top of that they involve the learner a great deal:-). Best wishes, Naheed
Hi everyone and above all Simon, it must be a bit trying to keep motivated with difficulties you have encountered. I mean firstly Marvin being too busy to write, now Linda having troubles with her computer, and me also being a bit apprehensive about bloging due a shooting incident some time ago in Finland. However, I hope my short message reaches you all well and in high spirits, I am very well and very keen to follow my new studies, Greek, not forgetting English naturally. Busy at work with some English speaking visitors coming... I am hosting the visit. Best...
Thanks for all your contributions. This blog has now closed and can no longer accept new comments.
