Computers, Places, Stories, Connections, Creativity and Collocations

“Get well Soon!” to your computer Linda! Poor old Marvin had a similar problem too. I wonder how he is… I hope this is not some kind of bad luck curse I have put on my blog students…! (Seems Ana Paula has a lucky charm to protect her though!) Anyhow, good luck with that Linda and know that we are waiting for your next post with bated breath.
Thanks and well done to all of you dedicated students who read the article I linked to and identified the special feature in the mountains of Cirali – the eternal flame! The article and the photos seem to have excited and captured your imaginations as much as the place has captured my imagination and, I should say, my heart and soul! I cannot explain how much I appreciate your comments. Josette, I must say that your comment itself was inspiring enough to spark off a myriad of thoughts regarding the interconnectedness of places, creativity, stories, histories and travel in my mind... Go on! Throw those clothes in the bag!!!
I have seen the eternal fire. It really does just come out of the side of the mountain!! The flames are not huge and when you see them they look just like little camp fires but nonetheless, it is a unique sight! I walked up the mountain to see the flames at night many years ago as a young and foolish man wearing only flip flops and when I came down I was much wiser (I knew that flip flops were no good for walking down mountains!)
I haven’t seen any turtles there though (and I have been there many times) I’m not sure when they come to lay there eggs… It is probably a good thing that I haven’t seen them, it means the turtles are being careful (which they really need to be amongst such harmful creatures as humans!!) It is also nice that so many of you shared my excitement about the pomegranate trees. Truly amazing aren’t they? I can’t remember ever having seen pomegranate trees in fruit before… Our Sweet Mamma Earth gives us such wonderful presents doesn’t she? We should take care of her more… By the way does anybody know the Greek myth about Persephone and the pomegranate seeds? If you don’t then check it out here.

Now, to change the subject to a more "teacherly" one, I want to say something about collocations. Alongside noticing and recording phrases, noticing and recording collocations is another helpful and important way to develop accuracy and natural sounding fluency.
Some of you probably know what collocations are I’m sure. For those who don’t here is an explanation:
Collocations are “word partners” or words that are used together. For example, think of the word “hair”. There are many collocations or words you use with hair. Look at the list below and find which word we do not use with hair:

black
curly
long hair
yellow
short

Answer: we do not use “yellow” with hair (we use blonde!). So yellow does not collocate with “hair”. It is easy to understand what you mean by “yellow hair” but it does not sound natural!
“blonde hair” is an adjective + noun collocation (blonde is an adjective, hair is a noun)
There are other types of collocations like: verb + noun
verb + adverb

The Challenge

1. What is the adjective that I used with student in this post? Name 3 other adjectives can you think of to use with student?
2. What verb did I use in this post with “imagination”?
3. What verb did I use with “blog” what other verbs do we use with blog?

Comments

Hi!! Simon Great to read your useful and amusing post. The first question: the adj you've used with student has been: "Dedicated": the dedicated student. 2 You've used the verbs with imagination: to excite, to capture.3 The verb you use with blog is, I think, to put on. I hope I'm correct Thanks

Hi Simon! Ooh touch the wood please!!! After some problems in the beginning of the year my pc is finally ok. But yesterday my printer conked out. Wait a minute. Gosh! Maybe you have something to do with this Simon ;-). Well, pomegranate trees are very special indeed. Their seeds taste childhood and breathtaking sunsets during the summer. I remembered that Hades had abducted Persephone but I had forgotten about the pomegranete seed. Apart from thatSimon, I´d like to say that about.com is a very good site. I found very interesting pieces of information there. Ok,homework. 1- dedicated students; a lazy student; a clever student; a bright student. 2- capture: "The article and the photos seem to have excited and captured your imaginations as much as the place has captured my imagination and, I should say, my heart and soul". 3- put:"I hope this is not some kind of bad luck curse I have put on my blog students…!" send: I send a comment on the blog everyday. write: Linda was writing an entry in her blog everyday. post: I´ve posted some pictures on my blog. Well, I think that´s all. I´m looking forward to reading your next post Simon. Now I have to organise my stuff because tomorrow I come back to work. I´m enjoying my last holidays hours. Good night, Ana Paula.

Dear Mr.Johnson, I am interested in learning English enthusiastically, and the last two overal band scores of IELTS (General)that I took were 7 & 6.5 .But I should take at least another 7 other than what I took at interview ( at most in three months). However, the results of other skills were in this order:Listening 6, Reading 6.5 , Writing 6.5. I would appreciate it if you could instruct me. By the way , the subjects and photographs of your entry are really attractive. Yours sincerely,

Hai First of all let me introduce myself. I am Kala a 12th grade student in the souther state of India Kerala. We call this place God's own country. The adjective you used with student is blog. the other three adjectives which we can use with student are bright student weak student good student the verb you used with imagination is captured.

hello , in this text dedicated have been used for student.we can use other adjectives like focused, determined, intelligent. the verb capture have been used for immagination.update for blog.

1-. Student: it collocates with bright, bad or smart. (I prefer bright). 2-. Imagination is collocated with "captured". Another posibility would be "to let fly your imagination"???. 3-. Blog is collocated with "put on", another verb could be update. How lovely are your blogs which are updated regulary with vibrant contents. That's all for today. See you. Toni

Hi Simon! I didn´t have a go at the hw, I am a bad student as ever. However, I´ve remembered of the student Marvin too, no word about how is he doing, but maybe the course hasn´t been at the end, yet. And maybe you are not going to hear from me since tomorrow because I´ll take a cure in our spa. You know I was really envious for your holiday. It surprised me you was going to a holiday almost as soon as your school year began. Meanwile, I have bought two much better english books in our bookshop which I am looking forward to read. There is one Remarque book which means the translation from german this time. All the best!!

Hi, Simon! You know, I really like your blogs. I have read almost all of them, but two latest were fascinating. And I was inspired by your amazing description of Cirali mountains. And I found some information on the web site that you indicated. Antalya Olympos(Cirali mountain) is the first original place of the olympic games. Not Greece, here is the beginning place of the olympic games. Above flames were the source of the olympic torch flames. Athletes were running from this mountain to Olympos coast. Except this,it has gained a mystical appearance and location. But honestly, I am not certain if this true. Can you elaborate about Olympic games, if you know of course?! Beforehand thanks!!! :)

You said "dedicated students".3 other adjectives are a hard student, an intelligent student and a medical student. You used "has capture" with imagination and "put on" with blog.

Hi Simon, it's nice to hear from you again. I hope you're still enjoying your holidays in that beautiful place, or have you come back yet? About the homework: you used the adjective dedicated together with the noun student. Other adjectives you can use are: nice students, hardworking students, serious students or intelligent students. with the word imagination you used the verb capture. And with blog you used the verb put. You can also say write on the blog, read the blog or follow the blog. Thanks Simon for the tip on collocations. I'll put it to use and try to improve my fluency. Best wishes. Bye, bye.

Hello Simon! First, thanks for your comment. My son also found it lovely. Would he be a bit proud of his mum? Pomegranate trees grow in my country or would they be persimmons because there are some similarities. I'll check! Anyway in spring their glowing flowers scattered in the dark green foliage are really beautiful... And in autumn when leaves have fallen, the sight is breathtaking (at least for me) Can you imagine all these bulging bright fruits hung among the bare branches! A feast for the eyes. You could say a tree in a Christmastale book. I had one when I was a little girl. I don't know whether people pick them or like me are fascinated by this spectacle.Anyhow once I tasted jam of one of these two fruits, it was a bit sour.Far better to leave them as a decoration and a dining room for birds! All my blog students seeem dedicated students. Nice to have workaholic students!Who is a gifted student? Where is the lazy student sleeping?Beware the teacher turns up! A so beatiful place can but capture our imagination. Let's it wander! To read blogs is always interesting. To write a blog is a pleasure. To flick through a blog is not enough to notice chunks isn't it? About seed now.. I finally have an explanation about winter and the seeds' refusal to germ! Anyway the soil needs and deserves some rest after its work...and so do I!!..and yet I would appreciate eating fresh tomatoes all year long! As a gardener I always marvel at the power, the energy inside a seed. So tiny seeds able to give so big lettuces and so on and so beautiful flowers. My garden was luxuriant in summer. I don't browse in shops... I'm better off browsing in my garden! Oh! I can imagine concerning flip flops to walk up and it's worse to walk down, isn't it? I sometimes go on hike in the Pyrenees but shoed with walking boots! Laters.

Hello Simon I've written one or two comments before. It didn't appear. Thank you very much for all your blogs. I generally liked but I want to share somethings about your blogs.I want to learn without noticing. I know I am english learner. There is a long way about it. You are very demanding teacher, It is a big chance for your students in your class. I am a regular reader even if I don't write. I don't want to feel like a student on this blog. While writing I want to be free (I know there is no obligation) on these blogs instead of doing the homeworks given by you. After reading your entries I want to write some comments without feeling like a student who doesn't do her homework. I love the writing coming from the expatriate about Çýralý which is one of my favorite places.Have you ever been there in spring? It is like a paradise in the smells of lemonade and orange flowers. I hope I could express myself.

Thanks for all your contributions. This blog has now closed and can no longer accept new comments.
