Stayin' Alive!

I’d like to say how satisfying it is for me (as your teacher) to see you using the phrases you have picked from my posts! As I have mentioned before, this is the best way for you to learn, by noticing interesting language as it is used, noting it down exactly as you see or hear it and then trying to use it. Well done and thank-you! Just one small thing though, I just noticed that in your blog entry dated Monday, 22nd September you used one of my phrases wrongly - can you find the mistake? Here is what you wrote:

“First thing you should know is how to move your hands and head at the same time.”

Trying to find your own mistakes is one of the best ways that you can improve your English. You are much more likely to improve by doing this yourself than if a teacher corrects your errors for you. Sometimes of course you will need some help though!! So that’s why I asked you to correct your own mistakes. You did very well, well done but there are a couple of things you need to look into. Here are the answers anyway so you can check your own answers (and everyone else)

1) Anyway, once I tried to take some belly dance classes…
2) which is a very demanding task
3) at the time
4) The first thing you should know is
5) thanks for telling me how you and Mark

Now,Ana Paula (and everyone else), can you tell me why in 1) above you should use the past form “tried” and not the present perfect form “have tried” ?
Also check your use of the present perfect form in this sentence from your last post – check it, change it and tell me why:

However, I´ve found the idea very interesting and I´d love to participate of a film session followed by a round-table meeting :-).

Ok, if that wasn’t enough, listen to Stayin Alive and pick out some more useful phrases from there and use them in your next post!

The sentence you asked me about in your most recent post “we live at a small and cosy white house which has a lovely garden in front of it” gets your idea across perfectly well so don’t worry about that. However there is a small preposition problem – can you find it?
By the way, the flowers look absolutely beautiful, thank-you for sharing them! Your Mum really does have green fingers! Please congratulate her from me. To answer your question about siblings, I have an elder brother. He lives in Oxford with his wife Mel and son Edward George. Here’s a picture:

By the way, I am on holiday for the next 10 days! Yippeeeee! We are planning on going to the south coast. This means that possibly I won’t be doing the show this Saturday… let’s see, you’ll have to tune in to find out!

YPW
from Sweden – glad you liked the HW!

Hey Vladimir & Naheed– looks like that monster came up quicker than you thought! I knew you’d eat your hat when you heard who the man was! Ha ha! The teacher tricks his students once again! ;)

Welcome Sunny from China – I hope you find this blog as much fun as I do!

Toni from Barcelona – thank-you for your kind words!

Daria – excellently precise HW – I’m very impressed!

Mauricio – Come on, it can’t be that bad where you live. Go and have a better look!

Robert from Poland – why don’t you get some ear plugs for your dogs!

Nurzhan – try the tasks I set for Ana Paula… then read the complete works of Shakespeare and put a book report about it on my desk by Monday!

Maione – isn’t Aya Sophia amazing! (and WA!) there is a problem with this sentence: “In spite of my efforts,a bit tongue in cheek if I can understand her feelings.”

Adriana – thanks for the tip about Tribo de Jah. I am a big reggae fan actually and I’m sure it will be pearl – listen out for that!!!

Marianna – my mask never drops from my face. Everyday is carnival day for me– the trick is just to know who you are yourself and to stay true. Now you have captured my imagination and I’m intrigued…

Comments

Hi Simon, We believe that you are building a better picture of us through our comments. As I mentioned my earlier blog you are a teacher with different style. You enjoy very much your radio show in the weekends. As you said music loves every one and it reaches us beyond the boundaries. I like melodious songs. You motivated me to watch English movie. Now you guide me listening English songs. I am really curious to know how you organize both profession well as an English teacher and a musician and a T.V presenter. Which one do you enjoy and like most? I started to learn Casio in my school days then I gave up. I wanted to learn guitar that was also an unattained dream. It is one of the inborn quality to have a skill of playing any of the music instrument. But I enjoy listening devotional and cine songs. I am listening one of hit cine songs in my mother tongue while I am typing this. I will try to listen more English song to improve my language.

Hi Simon, Good teachers always satisfy when his/her students obey and follow theri advice. Ana Paula has always done that. She is one of the best students in BBC learning English virtual class room. I envy her how she finds time to do making comment regularly, reading vigorously, watching movies and listening music. She is all-round performer. She is a perfect example for others to learn the English language. Regarding your advice on correcting mistakes trying to find our own mistakes is one of the best ways that we can improve our English. We can attain that level after reaching certain level. How do you judge my writing, do I reach that level?

Hi Simon, Again I missed the previous post of yours. Have a nice holiday and do share with us your experiences. Bon Voyage!

I can't help stopping singing the song by cleaf Richard ( we are going on a summer holiday,no more worries a week or two...)since I read and learnt that you are on holiday with your family for next ten days.I am sure you and your family are going to have a good quality of family time.Have a whale of a time and see you again!

Hello Simon! Would you mind to highlight me, please, which chunk is correct. The House Rules ban to… or The House Rules bans to… To say another words should I consider The House Rules as a solid issue or as a pattern of separated statements?

Hey up Simon, your brother looks like a pop star and his son is very cute. Speaking of using the past tense and not the present, here the use of past form of the verb is to show something that Ana expereinced sometime back in the past which she could talk about in her present. See you soon for some more interesting posts, bye. Naheed

Enjoy yourself. Wishing you a nice trip with your family.

Hi Simon, I guess I may have given you the wrong idea. There are some pretty good things about living here where I live. The only things I miss are the things you find in bigger cities, such as movie theaters, good internet connection, good places to eat and so on. But, of course, there is a good side too. Life is easier, there's less violence, we pretty much know everybody and everybody knows us or our relatives. I'd like to live in a place where I could have the advantages of both worlds, but I guess it may be too much to ask. Anyway, you're right. We should not complain but look better to what we have and we'll see that it's very much. Thank you for bringin that out to me. See you more later, Bye, bye.

Thanks Simon for your reply. Glad to know you like reagge songs.

Hello Simon, like you, I'm on holiday for the next 12 days, so this will be my last comment. We are going to the seaside of the South of France and we are lookimg forward to a nice time. I enjoyed this blog very much and have learned some nice phrases: I'm out and about- it has to be seen to be believed-thank you for sharing your time, your knowledge and parts of your life with us. Greetings for your wife and hugs for your little, cute daughter. I hope to meet you again, here by BBC. So long...

this is my first time writing in this blog .. very nice blog .. enjoy your holiday ^_^

...Could be : first thing you should know IS MOVING your hands and head at the same time

Dear Simon, In my opinion you are raising question to correct what Ana has written in her previous blog to teach us modal verb. As she has written “First thing you should know is how to move your hands and head at the same time” need to be the first thing you need to know how to move your hands and head at the same time. Here model verb should suggest it is a good idea for some one to learn and need to know suggest it is important to know the movement. 1) Anyway, once I tried to take some belly dance classes… In this sentence she is taking about what she did in past and results of it not affecting anything while she is talking. 2) which is a very demanding task In this sentence subject and verb are in agreement. 3) at the time- general phrase. 4) The first thing you should know is. In this sentence subject and verb are in agreement. 5) thanks for telling me how you and Mark –Correction to write initial letter of name of a person. Correction for “we live at a small and cosy white house which has a lovely garden in front of it” is we live in a small and cosy while house which has a lovely garden in front of it. Photograph your brother and nephew is lovely.

hi8 Simon.thank you for the correction. I had ccccccccccccccccompletely misunderstood the expression "a bit tongue in cheek".Now I know its meaning;ironical satirical intent:Self correction and evaluation work,I won't forget it any longer.Bye bye Maione

Hi Simon! The idea was simple. As I made my mind to listen to your show being yet intrigued enough, I´ve just connected the situation with some of Pietro Longhi pictures. We had had an unforgettable imaginary international meeting here. Even more, we had had the most mysterious teacher, horribly untalented musician here (can you guess whom he had taught, who his student blogger was?). Now, we have the more sofisticated stage reached. The teacher has his real radio show and will possibly examine his pupils! Only, the pupils stay to wear the screens as masks in front of their faces at taking place on this session, don´t they? Hopefully, I didn´t sound too complicated and you´ll forgive me the misserable mystifying attempt. The worst on the whole story is, I got no connection to the net Sunday morning which frustrated me at the end. Am I living on the pole or in the cental Europa? Oh, I almost forgot, you has approved my doubts, I would say you come from Italy and your brother play in the Rolling stone band! How old pupil do you teache there in Istambul? Nice holiday to the family!

Hello Simon! Even though I was too busy with my family and so on, to send posts, I 've been practising English, while gardening. You got a useful tip across in your last posts. I enjoy this way and I reckon it can bear a lot of fruits! It also kind of renews my interest. Thanks a lot. BBC LE is very varied though and I do take delight in browsing the programmes every day but I think we are sort of thirsty for always more. Bye for now.

Hi everyone, I hope life is treating you all well. I am sorry for my silence folks, I haven´t taken part in the conversation for a while, because of a very sad shooting incident in Finland. The episode was almost just as the one a year ago. Somehow I have been effected by it… it feels as it is not safe anymore to express oneself openly on the Internet. I do know this site is safe, and the conversation is done on a mutual understanding and respect for others. Nevertheless, I want to wish you all a very happy times. No doubt I will keep on visiting this site. Thank you Simon for good coaching.

Hi Simon, Im very happy that you're on leave for about 10 days, hahaha. Actually, i didn't post my comments on your previous blogs, so i was furious to know that i've missed my chance to learn something new. But now its good to know that you're on your holidays :). I've read all your posts many times and now im feeling better :). As, you've asked in your recent post that: can you tell me why in 1) above you should use the past form “tried” and not the present perfect form “have tried” ? . I think because it is already done in the past and we're not connecting past with present, so no need to use present perfect. As, you've already mentioned in your post that finding one own's mistake is fruitful for us in the future which i fully agree. But, i think this stage would be come after some practice because one cannot pinpoint their own mistakes unless he/she has knowledge about it. Simon, would you recommend us some books as a learner of english?. Now, i must dash:). See ya, Bye

Hi, has it made my stupid comment which could prevent our lovely teacher to appear again? We are missing you, Simon! Leila, if you could know something about the bacteria world where there good can constantly invisibly or abruptly change in to the worst and vice versa and despite that we cant stop that life. Is that only the weak consolation against the fear..

I read the blogs! A new experience to share the language and culture. Now I feel I am not alone in this world.Iam staying A alive!Iremember apop music using that metaphor. Will you please lets hear it once again

Thanks for all your contributions. This blog has now closed and can no longer accept new comments.
