Teach the World not the Word!
Sorry for the delay guys! Been run off my feet as today was the first day of school!
Dear Marvin,
I’m so sorry to hear about your computer and camera, I know how infuriating those kind of things are. It’s not that we care about the things, it’s that we care that we can’t do the stuff we had planned right? It’s also a hassle to replace, fix them or make do without as you put across so well in your in your blog…
Anyway, you’ve got enough on your plate what with the CELT course and settling into your new digs and all. (People, believe me, Marvin really has got his hands full, this course he’s doing is very demanding!).
I loved the anecdote about the Bedouin that you began your blog with. I can really empathize with that feeling of moving too fast for the soul, I sometimes get that feeling at work!!! That’s not to say that my job is soul destroying as so many jobs are out there are, I love my job, but sometimes the kids and my bosses have me running from pillar to post! Marvin, it’s good to start your lessons with such anecdotes (as long as your students can understand it) and these kinds of stories make great discussion points. You should utilize your humanistic insight and this ability of yours to tell stories, in particular your own stories, when you are teaching and planning your lessons (for the course and after). If you take your whole self into the classroom then you will more easily grab the attention and curiosity of your students. Language development occurs through interaction and interaction occurs when there is motivation, when people have the need or desire to communicate. You, your experiences and reflections are your greatest resource for creating inquisitive minds!
The other major piece of advice I have for you would be that you should always have clear language goals for your lessons and be sure that the activities you have set are able to achieve them. Whenever you plan an activity you must ask yourself “Will this activity help me achieve my aims? If the activity can achieve my aims (or part of them), what problems may come up and how can I pre-empt or deal with them as they come up.” Of course a lot of this will depend on who your students are, on their own particular characters, their language needs and level. I suspect that a lot of this will sound familiar as you already have experience in the classroom. Don’t hesitate to ask about something specific that comes up in the course though, it’s my pleasure to help!
Regarding your almost faultless writing, I have found a few errors that I will note below. However, today I’m going to use a different technique that is more student centred (which is almost always a more effective way of facilitating for learning!). Yes, I’m going to ask you (and everyone else) to correct your own mistakes! Marvin has an excuse not do the homework now but nobody else does!
But before that Marvin here are 2 freebies:
Will I be the only non-native student? (which one is correct?)
What will the syllabus/curriculum be like? (which one is correct? – I’m not sure, it depends if you are talking about the syllabus or the curriculum!:)
Homework
1.Correct the mistakes
I just know that we're going to conduced six lessons and have to deliver three papers about English language teaching.
I'm waiting now that my soul is catching up.
The room is far from a five star accommodation but the people are very sweet and are trying very hard to make myself feel at home
I've also a few bad news to report
It wasn't an expensive one, but I planed to take a lot of picture while I'm in Ireland.
2. Comprehension
According to my blog, how and why do people develop their language skills?
Think of any good teachers you have had, why were they good?
3. Developing Lexis:
Find me 5 phrases that I used to talk about being busy, doing hard work, having a problem or a bad job
Now some photos of Arnavutkoy the area where I live in Istanbul:

I wanted to post more but I need to reduce the size (too many kb!) help...! (I use a Mac too!)

Hi Simon! It was nice to see the place where you blog :-). Moroever, you have a beautiful view on your way to work. I reckon it´s very realxing to look at it after a soul destroying work day, isn´t it? Oh, let me hand out my homework :-): 1- Correct the mistakes: a)I just know that we're going to conduce six lessons and I have to deliver three pieces of paper about English language teaching. b) Now, I'm waiting that my soul catch me up. c)The room is far from being a five-star accommodation, but the people are very sweet and they are trying very hard to make me feel at home. I've also some bad news to report. It wasn't an expensive one, but I planned to take a lot of pictures while I'm in Ireland. 2- a) According to your blog, people develop their language skills through interaction and motivation, and when they have the need or desire to communicate. 2- b)The best teachers that I had could explain the most difficult subjects in a very clear way. They grab my attention interacting with the class. Making me feel bewitched by the subject. 3- run off my feet, to get enough on your plate, it´s also a hassle,my job is soul destroying,to have someone running to pillar to post. Simon, it´s quite late on my side. I have to turn off the computer now. Tomorrow is going to be one of that hard days at work. See ya soon, Ana Paula.
Thanks,Simon, the "teach-method" that you are talking about is really great even to non-language teaching, and your enthusiasm for English-teaching is touching us.How wonderful if the school teachers use "humanistic insight"--it is not only about the "tactful" skill! By the way,I expect much to Marvin's curriculum.
Hello Simon! One of the most colorful period of your life, as it seems to me, you’ve mentioned by the way. It’s unbelievable experience to work as a Harbor Master on such magnificent part of mom Europe as Lake Constance is! I’m adamant you should tell us about that time. Task one: I just know that we're going to conduce six lessons and to deliver three essays about teaching English language. I'm waiting now to catch up my soul. The room is far from a five star accommodation but the people are very hospitable to make myself feel at home I've also some bad news to report It wasn't an expensive one, but I planned to take a lot of pictures while I'm in Ireland. Task two: According to your blog students improve their language skills through motivated interaction. From my point of view, good teacher provides interesting lessons with colorful and catching examples. Good teacher gives an opportunity to discover something useful and interacts vividly to keep on attention. Task three: Been run off my feet, as today was the first day of school! That’s not to say that my job is soul destroying as so many jobs are. Sometimes the kids and my bosses have me running from pillar to post. I can really empathize with that feeling of moving too fast for the soul, I sometimes get that feeling at work! I beg your pardon for being nosy, but as it seems to me the phrase “That’s not to say that my job is soul destroying as so many jobs are out there are, I love my job” may loose “out there are” without any regret. Many thanks for interesting post.
Hi Simon I love your way of writing it is so energetic but don't you think that it is better to come out from this special subjet of teaching method etc.. I think it would be better to speak of something more common to include more people and increase public relation and information. best wishes,
Hi Simon and everyone “Language development occurs through interaction and interaction occurs when there is motivation, when people have the need or desire to communicate”, how true it is Simon, thank you! It also applies to so many other things, for example to human relationships and furthermore it is a good advice to us all to practice at our work. Simon you also wrote: “Will this activity help me achieve my aims? That is a very good question to ask oneself when selecting right path in achieving the set target. I hope I am excused to limit my answers to the ones below; I am rather worn out due a short hospital visit (sick leave). “I just know that we're going to conduced six lessons and have to deliver three papers about English language teaching.” I would maybe say: I just know that we are going to be limited to six tutored lessons and will have to deliver three papers about English teaching. “I'm waiting now that my soul is catching up.” = I would say: I am waiting for my soul to catch up. “The room is far from a five star accommodation but the people are very sweet and are trying very hard to make myself feel at home.” = I would say: The room is far-off from a five star accommodation, but people are (very) sweet and try (very) hard to make me feel at home. “I've also a few bad news to report.” = I would say: I also have some bad news. “It wasn't an expensive one, but I planed to take a lot of picture while I'm in Ireland.” I would say: It was not an expensive one, but I had planed to take a lot of pictures while in Ireland. Best…
It is my first time to correct the mistakes in English. to conduced - to conduce a five star accommodation - a five-star-accommodation I'm waiting now - now I am waiting myself - me I've also - I also have picture - pictures I had some good teachers. When I attended his or her lesson for 40 minutes, it seems like 5 or 10 minutes. The way of teaching drew my attention.
Hi Simon, We also have a lot in commomn! Like you,I´m an English teacher. At university I studied English, Portuguese and Literature! And later on when I left it I took a Celta course and a Tefla one.I concentrated on the study of English.Nowadays, I´ve been seriously thinking of taking the Delta course, I love challenges.I´m fond of English and I agree with you that language development occurs through interaction, motivation and desire that´s why I´m here!I love writing , reading and talking in English, although this is my weakest point, mainly due to lack of practice. It is not very commom to bump into English blokes here in my city.I made some really good English friends though, but unfortunately they vanished into thin air. Ricky is now in Brasilia and Tony went back to England. I was lucky to have had really good teachers in Rio and São Paulo at the language schools and university, who encouraged me a lot. The dearest among them was my uncle Stephen, my dad´s brother. It is disheartening, though, to see what little value and dough is given to our profession! How are teachers regarded in Turkey? Do you teach in a Turkish school or is it a British one? How are your lessons like? Do you follow a book or do you devise your own teaching material? Is your class packed with students? How is the learning of English seen in Turkey? Here in Brazil around the coast it seems people are more aware of its need but, in the interior ,I´m afraid its need is not strongly felt! Now let me get down to work solving the exercises; Correction 1.I´ve just known that we are going to teach six lessons and are supposed to deliver/hand in three papers/ assignments about English Language Teaching. 2. Now,I´m waiting while my soul catches up. 3.The room is far from being a five-star accommodation but the people are very sweet and are trying to make me feel at home. 4. I´ve also had a few pieces of/ a bit of bad news to report. 5....but I plan to take a lot of pictures while I´m in Ireland. 2. Comprehension 2.1People develop their language skills when they feel motivated to do so and through interaction. Need is the mother of learning! 2.2. My dearest teacher was my uncle Stephen. What made him so special was his enthusiasm and creativity and his good sense of humour! 3.being busy= to run from pillar to post;to have your hands full, to have enough on your plate doing hard work; the course is very demanding. having a problem or bad job; soul- destroying job. By the way, what does a harbour master do? Is he the one in charge of the harbour? What a huge difference from a habour to a classroom, although the master may be the connection between the two!Cheerio...
Hello Simon, Nice to see you again. Arnavutkoy looks great! Hope to see many of its beautiful scenery through your blogs. Thank you so much for your helpful tips. I like it when you say how a teacher grabs their students' attention and curiosity. Now I'll do the duty! 1/ I think Marvin sentences would be like these. I just know that we're going to conduct six lessons and have to deliver three papers about English language teaching. I'm waiting for my soul to catch up now. The room is far from five-star accommodation but the people are very friendly and are trying very hard to make myself at home. I've also got some bad news to report. It wasn't an expensive one, but I had planed to take a lot of picture while I'm in Ireland. 2/ According to your blog, when people have motivation, they will have the need to communicate and through communication they develop their language skills. My good teachers understood and didn't do everything for us just helped. 3/ Being run off one's feet, having got one's hands full, on one's plate, having someone running from pillar to post, soul destroying. All the best, Yen
Hello simon. I am sorry i could not share this blog from begening. First of all i want to tell you that i am not good in english but very much interested to learn. So i am trying to do as per your instructions. I have just known that we are going to conduct six lessons and have to deliver three papers about english language teaching. It is my humble request you to please correct my english wherever necessary. I am waiting that my soul to catching up now.I have also some bad news to report. It was not an expensive one but i had planed to take many pictures while i was in Ireland. I am sorry it is too late. Be Happy.
Hi Simon, good luck for your new scholar year, mine starts next Monday.Homework:1) -I only know we're going to conduce six lessons and have to deliver three papers about English teaching; -now I'm waiting for that my soul is catching up; - The room is far from a five star accomodation but people are very sweet and are trying very hard to make me feel at home;-I've got also some bad news to report; - it wasn't an expensive one but I planned to take a lot of pictures during my stay in Ireland. 2) Students develop their language skills when they are motivated to communicate, it's up to the teacher to create interesting and interactive situation. Teacher's feelings and experiences can suggest involving topics and activities. I met good teachers when I attended a course in England, they were lively, enthusiastic, full of amusing ideas. I felt completely at ease, I never got bored and I managed to overcome my speaking difficulties. 3) Being busy: been run of my feet; the kids and my bosses have me running from pillar to post; Doing hard work: this course he's doing is very demanding; Having a problem: it's also a hassle to replace; My job is soul destroying.Best wishes
hi simon, how are you?are you already fed up with school?About the mistakes;1)we are going to conduce,,,,2),,,,but people are,,,,,3)I have a few bad pieces of news too.4)I had planned to take a lot of pictures. About comprehension:people develop their language skills when they have been given the motivation to interact,to communicate. The teacher i remember most is an italian teacher whose main goal was to develop was to make his students open minded future citizens.. As far as lexis is concerned i found:you have got enough in your plate.soul destroyng job. marvin has got his hands full. the kids and bosses have me running from pillar to post. moving too fast for the soul. warm regards maione
Hello Simon, your today’s tasks seem to be rather challenging for me: Correct the mistakes: 1. I just know that we’re going to conduct six lessons and have to deliver three papers on English language teaching. 2. I’m waiting now for my soul to catch up. 3. The room is far from being a five star accommodation but people are very sweet and are trying very hard to make me feel at home. 4. I’ve also got (or I have) some bad news to report. 5. It wasn’t an expensive one, but I’d planned to take a lot of pictures during my stay in Ireland. Comprehension: According to your blog, people develop language skills through interaction which arises from their need for communication with each other. 3. to run off one’s feet, it’s a hassle, to have enough on one’s plate what with, to have one’s hands full with, to run from pillar to post. Bye for now
Hi Simon! It was very entertaining reading you. This is my first time wrinting to you, let me tell you I find it great the fact that you're living in Istanbul. I suppose that by this time you're so used to the typical lifestyle of the city. I didn't do the homework :P but the question about what makes a teacher a good teacher caught my attention. I think that a teacher has to 'surprise' you. That is, making every class class different: a new game, watch a movie another day, make the students act for a while in front of the class, things like that. Have a good day, Liz
Hi Simon, The skills of language development occur through interaction and motivation. Motivation alone makes us to interact with others. We should have the need and desire to communicate. Our experience and reflection are the greatest resources for creating inquisitive minds. Some teachers always encouraged me to learn and they taught me in a simple way. I learnt easily even it was difficult to grasp by these kinds of teachers. Having a problem- a hassle to replace. A bad job- have me running pillar to post.
Hello Simon thanks so much for your informative posts. Now let me do my homework:) 1)I just know that we're going to conduce six lessons and have to deliver three papers about English language teaching. - I'm waiting for my soul to relax. -The room is far from a five star accommodation but the people are very sweet and trying very hard to make me feel at home.- I've also few bad news to report. - It wasn't an expensive one, but I planed to take a lot of pictures while I'm in Ireland. 2)People develop their language skills through interaction, motivation and the need of people to communicate. 3)"sometimes the kids and my bosses have me running from pillar to post", "The feeling of moving too fast for the soul", "Been run off my feet. I hope I've done well. Simon, could you please give me some tips for my IELTS test because I'm sitting to it in next December? Thanks in advance. Bïa
Hi Simon, first of all, let me share my joy for having a teacher like you. Before starting my homework I would like to share it with you that I do not have an answer of the question you put on number 2, in comprehension segment. Unfortunately, I attended the school only till the 10th grade. After that I had to quit. I was crazy about formal education but the circumstances were inhospitable. I was told that the education is not as “important” as the other few things I supposed to do first. At that time it was crystal clear that I won’t be able to study like other children. Since my syllabus was in Urdu language, learning English seemed next to impossible. To cut the story short I decided to defeat the obvious fate I was being pushed to. It seems so funny now that when I started reading English language books, I could not understand a single word. On top of everything, I had no teacher. In the beginning, I got frustrated. It appeared as if nothing is happening and my mind is as blank as a blank paper. I used to stop studying in panic and start again. Then it became a regular phenomenon and it went on and on and on. Finally, I started feeling some sort of change. I could read and understand easily. Meanwhile things got better and I resumed my studies as a private student. During this whole process the only thing I missed was a teacher – good or bad was relative. I am really happy that BBC provides an opportunity to interact with teacher and other learners. Now the only regret I have is that I should have learnt about this golden opportunity earlier. But no problem……… being late is better than never. Correct the mistakes: the little I know is that we will deliver six lessons and we are suppose to produce three papers on English language teaching techniques. I am waiting for my soul to catch up. Though the rented room not comfortable and it is also far away from the down town but my new neighbors are trying hard to make me feel at home. I have also a few bad news to tell/ to share. It was not a high-tech camera but I had planned to make a maximum use of it during my stay in Ireland. Comprehension: people develop their language proficiency to enhance their communication skills. It is generally believed that good communication is a key to success. According to your blog, people develop their language skills through interactive learning process. A good learner or teacher would always set clear goal for his language activities. He sets the stage in his mind and takes his whole self into the class room. By doing this small exercise, he grabs new words and ideas without tying himself up in knots. Furthermore, interaction and motivation are two basic elements to enhance the language skills. One should always keep in mind that learning a language is a slow process. Being a student one should be able to utilize one’s humanistic insight in order to describe interesting anecdotes of one’s own life. This way of learning would enable you to describe your own feelings. Ultimately, you would be able to describe other events as well. Developing Lexis: been run off my feet, have got enough on your plate, got one’s hand full, running from the pillar to post, into your new digs and all, soul destroying
Hi Simon! Unfortunaly I can't help you with the resizing of photos :( 1. Grammar is my weak point. * we're going to conduce six lessons... * I'm waiting now my soul catching up. * are trying very hard to make me feel at home... * It wasn't an expensive one, but I have planed to take a lot of picture while I was in Ireland. 2. People brush up their language when they communicate and have motivation for this. I remember with warmth about my maths teacher at school. She was like a grandma for everybody in the class. 3. I've found 4 phrases: *Been run off my feet. *Has got his hands full. *Job is soul destroying. *My bosses have me running from pillar to post
Hi Simon! I 'm very enjoying your enhries ,your style and your teaching metode.I'm sure that you're a good teacher you are going to help Marvin a lot.And your kind of homework will help us to emprove our English too . But i'd like if possiple to give us some information about live style and people in Turkey. Now i try to answer to requests A:I just know that we are going to conduce (but what the conduce means i sought on Oxford without result..?)B: I'm waiting now to cautch up my soul.C:The room is far from five stars...D:I also have some bad wews.F:It wasn't an expensive one ,but i planed to take a lot of pictures.--- 1-People devlope their language skills for attending a good and clear communication with others. 2-the good teacher is some one who achieves his aims with simple and clear means ,with a little efforts too.But that needs a good understanding of his students and good preparation of the supjects which want to teach. 1- beeng run of my feet. 2- moving too fast for the soul 3- got his hand full 4- have me runingfrom pillar to post. 5- to got enough on your plate. Now i get enough on my plate see you next blog Anwar
Hi Simon, Its great to learn new things from your posts. Now my hw: 1. I just know that we're going to conduced six lessons and i have to deliver three papers about English Language Teaching. 2-I'm waiting now that my soul catches me up. 3- The room is far from a five star accommodation but the people are very sweet and they tried very hard to make myself feel like at home. 4- I've also some bad news to report. 5- It wasn't an expensive one, but I planned to take a lot of pictures while I'm in Ireland. Now Comprehension: Language development occurs through interaction and interaction occurs when there is motivation, when people have the need or desire to communicate. Now the second part: I like teachers who create motivation among students and take his/her whole self into the classroom through this h/she will more easily grab the attention and curiosity of their students. I cant name anyone but i think we had so many good teachers during our educational years -:). I like your sentence in which u said we should have clear cut goals and we should know where we're making mistakes and then how to change our stratedgy according to it. 3. Developing Lexis: Been run off my feet (it means very busy), Pillar to post (doing hardwork), moving too fast for the soul (bad job). Simon i dont understand your what you want to ask in 2 freebies?. And how we can correct our own mistakes? How we know where we're making mistakes? Thankyou Simon. Bye for now. Mahjabeen
Hey! What an interesting post! Right, the homework now: to conduce six lessons...my soul catches up...are doing their best to make me feel at home...some bad news...I'd planned to take a lot of pictures(while I was) in Ireland. People and more particularly pupils have to be motivated to improve their language skills. Then they feel the desire, the need to communicate and they feel like practising. So teachers have to arouse and keep awake their inquisitive minds:the key of the success, don't you think so? The teachers I remember are those who were kind of strict and demanding with me :they wanted me to make progress so I probably felt they were interested in my work, my improvement and so on.There, gathering good marks is certainly felt as a shared pleasure. This snowballs.According my 17 year old son, his Biology teacher has understood everything. He 's enthralling, thrusting and avoids doing, saying things that young people don't like..and certainly because he remembers what annoyed himself at school. And you can believe me he is demanding with them. And related to work : To have enough on your plate...to have hands full...a job which destroys soul...I have to run from pillar to posts... Demanding course. Bye for now.
Hi there Simon, your blog is really very stimulating. And this particular entry is full of new expressions and phrases. Sometimes it was hard to make out what you meant. But that's the way we learn isn't it? Well, let me try the exercises: Correcting mistakes: I just know that we're going to study six lessons and have to deliver three papers about English language teaching. I'm waiting now that my soul is catching up. (didn't get this one) The room is far from a five star accommodation but the people are very sweet and are trying very hard to make me feel at home I also have some bad news to report It wasn't an expensive one, but I planned to take a lot of pictures while I'm in Ireland. Comprehension: According to the blog people develop language skills when they interact and when they are motivated. I remember a good teacher I had at school who was able to keep the class interested in what he had to say and also gave room for the students to participate. Developing lexis: Been run off my feet / to be infuriating / It's a hassle / to set into new digs / to have someone running from pillar to post. Well, I guess that's it. See you more soon. Bye.
HI, I don't know if I'm late but I'll post my homework. (never is late if the product is good ???? I don't know if it is said like this) 1-. Corrected mistakes. I just know that we're going to be conduced six lessons and I have to deliver three papers about English language teaching. Now I'm waiting that my soul will catch up me. The room is far from a five star accommodation but people is very sweet and they are trying very hard to make myself feel at home. Bad news, I didn't find out any mistake!!!! (what a pity I'm bad) It wasn't an expensive one, but I planed to take a lot of picture while I were in Ireland. 3-. People develop their skills by motivation. When they have the need to communicate they enter "in the zone" and they became better competent speakers. 4-. I'm a bit fustrated, or perhaps "I'm short of time", because I've found only 3 examples. it’s that we care that we can’t do the stuff we had planned right? you’ve got enough on your plate… the kids and my bosses have me running from pillar to post!
Hooooo, no. I've read another expresion about the rush of work: just at the start "been run off my feet". See you.
Thanks for all your contributions. This blog has now closed and can no longer accept new comments.
