Long live the past!
Hi! Thanks for all your comments everyone, it’s great to hear from you all… I’ll reply to you individually in my next blog but just a quick thing to mention for our newer readers – don’t forget that there’s always going to be a gap between when you write your comment and when it appears on the website. This is because they are all read by the BBC Learning English team first before they’re uploaded to weed out the spam and things like that. If you post a comment over the weekend you probably won’t see it until at least Monday – Zaya you said you were disappointed because your first comment hadn’t appeared, but if you have a look now it’s there! Well done on the vocabulary definitions everyone, and your passive form sentences were absolutely correct Pritam :-) Kiran I hope you’ll have a chance to blog soon! We miss you!
Unfortunately the weather has been so atrocious here lately that I haven’t been up to much. We’re supposed to be on a camping holiday in Cornwall at the moment but instead we are taking refuge in my parents house waiting for the weather to cheer up a bit. We did have a nice day out yesterday though and went for a trip on an old steam train through the countryside. Here’s a photo for you:

The train station that it leaves from has been made to look just like a train station did in days gone by, with piles of old style suitcases and trunks and lovely old wooden signs – I sometimes wish that I’d been born a hundred years ago instead of now, I just love how things used to look and people used to dress – so much more stylish that these days! Of course this is a terribly romantic view of life back then, I’m sure things were a lot less comfortable in many ways… what do you all think? If you could press a button and go back in time to how things were 100 years ago, would you do it?
Now I’ve had a brainwave that I’d like to share with you. I was thinking it would be kind of fun to do an interview with someone for this blog and as I’ve been thinking about olden times a lot recently I thought it might be nice to do an interview with my Granny! That is, my Dad’s mother. She was born in 1922 and she grew up in the little fishing village of Polperro, the village where my parents now live (more about this village here). When she was a child her family used to run a dairy and would send out butter and cream to people all over the country by post, which seems kind of funny to me now. Anyway, rather than me thinking up the questions, I thought I’d make it your homework today, Kiran and everyone else – think of one or two questions that you’d like to ask my Granny and write them in the comments section. We can then have a look at the grammar of question forms, and I’ll choose my favourite questions and ask her to answer them… how does that sound? Try and write your questions before Friday so there’s a good chance of them appearing on the website before the weekend and then I’ll interview her on Saturday or Sunday and publish it early next week. Okey doke?
Time for a cup of tea.
xxx Amy

Hi Amy. How do you do? The Great Western locomotive looks absolutly lovely. It seems like a picture of a child's book. Well. This is my question for your Granny: What was the best and the worst of the Second World War years? I wish you a sunny day soon. Bye.
Hi Amy, the Q&A of interviewing your Granny is qiute a innovative idea as you have done before. May I ask how high is your IQ? I guess your Granny is in a good health, I would like to congratulate her on it with my heart. There is a Chinese saying:"It is precious to have an elder person at home." My question to your Granny is:" What is your image of Amy Lightfoot when she was little? Is/was her foot light? Best wishes to your Granny, be sure to post her photo(s). James- greeting from Taiwan.
Can you share with us some memories in your past you wish to leave again. How was it running a diary then as against running it now.
Hi Amy ; This is my question for your Granny : In this period , England was a great empire with a lot of colonies accross the world . Did you have a possibility to travel to a colony , what about the infuence of these colonies in your daily life and did you meet in this period a person from the colonies in your village ? A best regards for your Granny from Morocco .
Hello Amy, Obviously, my first comment didn't reach you. This is my second attempt. Your brainwave is a fanstastic one. Who of us has a Granny who was born in 1922 and is still able to give an interview? I could imagine she and her husband started running their diary in 1952 or so. You have reported she had sent butter and cream to people all over the country. My questions are: 1. How did they guarantee that the butter still was butter when it arrived the customers' home? 2. Which means of transport were used at this time? 3. How mmany years did they run their diary in this way? Have a nice day, Feleicitas
Hi Amy - I agree with you, a lot of things of the past are fascinating but I don't even think of living without the fridge or the washing machine. About the present, in my country, I blame the landscape distruction by too many horrible buildings and motorways. I would like to go back 100 years ago only if I were sure of living in a well-off family, am I too materialistic? Here you are my homework: to weed out = to remove, to clean; atrocius = absolutely awful; to take refuge = to find a safe place to escape from bad weather or danger; to cheer up = to get better; days gone by = in the past; brainwave = a good idea; okey doke = do you agree? Great idea an interwiew with your Granny,I'll think about some question to ask her. Ciao
Hello Amy. Nice to see you back again. Thanks for reminding us about the Spam Manager. I myself try not to be so disappointed when I guess how worse would be if instead of expressing my feelings and thoughts with words, I used drawings that could be erased or work of art that could be destroyed. Anyway, it's good to have another chance to say welcome back, even though belated. I'd like to ask to your Granny if she has already felt as something happening nowadays is just a repetition of things of the past like a circle. Plus, what would be the best thing she has realized or come across in her life (2 questions)? Bye Adri
Hi Amy! The old steam looks lovely. However, I would never press a button and go back in time 100 years. Oh no. Life nowadays is by far more practical :-). Anyway, I have a question to your Granny. Could she please tell us which the most unforgettable day of her life was? ( oh, I´m not sure if I formulated this question correctly) Ah, now the vocabulary: To weed out: to get rid of something; Atrocious: cruel; extremely horrible; To take refuge: to stay in a place because a little change of plans; To cheer up: to get better; Days gone by: old times; A brainwave: a brainstorm. To have a very good idea; Okey doke: ok. Well, I hope to hear from you soon Amy. Best wishes, Ana Paula.
Hi Amy, hope you will be fine and doing well. The way you start this month blog is interesting and different. You know very well that how to engage readers. In each blog you introduce something new. I like the idea of interviewing your granny and want to ask lot of questions e.g. • What is her full name? • She is living with whom? • How does she spend her time? • What are the good memories with whom she wants to live? • Is she happy/satisfied with her life? • Is there any thing she wanted to do but she couldn’t do in her life? And why • What are the thing of this time she likes as compare to the time when she was young? • What are the things of this time she does not like as compare to her young age time? • Any advice for the youngster?
Hi all… Amy the weather here in Finland has also been atrocious, the temperatures have fallen near zero during the night, and it is supposed to be summer! I was happy to read about Polperro. When I was expecting my daughter, I was visiting the very same place, and my baby (then) moved in Polperro the very first time. You can imagine I never forget Polperro. A moat is a good word; I was just trying to remember it yesterday for some reason or other... In Finnish, a moat is “vallihauta.” Lastly, maybe your Granny would like to tell us about the sea: What does the sea mean to people in Polperro today and what did it used to mean.
Hi, Amy! It’s really a great pleasure to know about an English steam train! I love trains! How lovely it is to travel by a steam train around English countryside! Could you tell me about its route and when it was built, please? As you know West Bengal is the ‘home’ of Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, which was built by the British between 1879 and 1881 and is about 86 km long. Hopefully, 10 years ago it was declared world heritage site by UNESCO. When I was young (in late ‘80s), I used to travel by steam train from Burdwan (my home town) to Asansol (my mum’s parents live). Those days are really special for me but, after few years most steam trains were replaced by modern Electric trains Yes, of course I’d like to have a time machine! Wow! That’s a cool idea Amy. It would be very nice to have a chance to ‘meet’ your Granny! I’d like to ask her few questions. “Hello Granny! How are you doing? 1. If you close your eyes can you see the Polperro in its late ‘30s and how it was looked like then? 2. What’s the most memorable day in your life and have you experienced any major natural disasters in Polperro? 3. Is there anything you would like to reintroduce from the ‘past’ which you really miss in today’s life?” Please forgive me for asking too many questions to your Granny. Anyway, here is my homework:- 1.to get rid of unwanted things, 2. of very bad quality, 3. shelter or protection from danger, trouble, 4. to make a place look brighter or more attractive, 5. in the past, 6. a sudden clever idea, 7. used to express agreement. Please give my regards to your Granny when you see her. Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful blog and picture with us. I can hardly wait for your next post! Thank you very much! With kind regards, Pritam.
Hello Amy I'm glad to read your informative posts and your creative thoughts. I would like to do the first part of the homework you proposed. Here's my questions to your respectful grandma: Dear Gramy, having been living for long time and experiencing many changes in the world around you; what do you like most the world of today or the time of your youth??! 2) What values appears to you increasing in our society and what appears to be decreasing? 3) Gramy, if you had the chance to live your youth again; what would you do the first and what would you prevent doing?! Those are my question Amy. I would like to see them corrected and asked to your gramy. My warm salutations for her. Bïa
HI,Amy How are you and your family? Is the weather cheering up yet? I am sure your parents are so dilighted to see your family a bit longer than they expected. Once we took a steam train throuth countryside and We,sepecially my son loved the sound and lines of steam following us.Since you asked us to do some homework I have been thinking what questions I would love to ask to your granny and I've got some brainwaves. Here are my guestions.1.What was her dreams when she was in teens or twenties.2.Who was her hero or heroines and whether she has a idol now.3.which quotations she likes and gives young generation like us.That's all today and I hope the weather britens so your family can carry on holiday.Have a fantastic day!
Hi Amy, Surely the people who lived 100 years ago did not enjoy the life that we are enjoying. But I believe they lived simple and meaningful life. Though we have modern and sophisticated facilities in every day life do you think are we living satisfactorily. It was the imaginations of 100years ago. I walked so many miles to reach the destinations. I felt hale and healthy. These are the questions for grandma. What were all the things did grandma send and receive by post. How long it took to reach the destinations. How was her feeling when she received the letters or greetings from far away places it took 30 or more days to reach her hand? Could you compare it with the e mail facilities. it doesn’t wait so long but receiving the letter from the post man makes any difference.
Hi Amy. My question for your Granny is something that I think will be very interesting. I've read about Irish History and they became Republic in 1922, just when Granny was born. Before that time the whole Ireland belonged to England. My question is What Did she hear about Irelands independence and IRA when she was child? Best regards. Have a nice week.
Hello Amy, it's nice to have you back on the blog. I loved the idea of the interview. We have so much to learn from the people who have been on this world longer than we have. But we usually don't find the time to sit and talk to them about their wonderful experiences. When we do that we often get amazed at the thins we find out. Anyway, I'd like you to ask your granny if she changed the way she dresses over the years and if she did if she likes it more now than she did in the past. Again Amy it's great to have you here with us. Bye Bye for now.
Hello Amy! I'm really happy to see you back again. My question to your granny is "Could you tell us how was a day when you were as old as your grandaugther (Amy)? ¿Which are the big differences between Amy's days and yours at the same age? Thank you for asking our question." Bye.
Hi Amy! It is very interesting to ask your granny. My questions are: What is her hobby? What does she do in her leisure hours. How does she keep fit?
Hi Amy, how are you doing ? It is nice to see you taking real interest to teach us. The exercise you started about vocabulary is great. I don't have much time to do it regularly but I will try to do it. You wrote in your blog that you were in India for long time, I really want to know what were you doing in India for so long ? And finally, draw my attention to mistakes if I have done any in this writing. Bye for now.
Hi Amy, If i had the opportunity i would ask your granny if she was satisfied with the kind of life she was leading or if she nourished some secret ambitions. In other words I would ask her what were the values of women in those times.bye bye for now
Dear Amy, Photograph of steam train engine reminded me my first time dummy train ride when I was about eight. I asked my father to make an arrangement for train ride. First of all he laughed at me, and then he took me to a park where dummy train was available (still it is there). This train is only one available in the hilly region. In Nepal there is only one railway track which joins Janakapur (Nepal) to Jai Nagar (India). Nepalese have to travel India to have a train ride. Your idea about time machine isn’t a bad idea. It is a kind of fantasy and if any one thinks that he/she has to spend remaining life in that period starting from the point now onward without forgetting anything what he/she had experienced. Q1. Can you tell me - what was the longest time it took to reach its destination? (It means packet of butter or cream) Q2. What was the heaviest packet delivered? How efficiently were they packed? Meaning of the words: To weed out – To sort out junk or inappropriate mail, Atrocious – very bad, To take refuge – take a shelter in terrible condition To cheer up - turn into pleasant mood, Days gone by- in the past A brainwave – an idea Okey doke - alright

Hi Amy, Well, now I understood why I was not able to see my comments right away. Sorry for being impatient... Atrocious means bad and unpleasant. But what does "be up" mean? You said "... I haven’t been up to much" You haven't done anything to say? Going back to old days. The Mongolians ruled the world once upon a time. But they were under Manchu invasion 100 years ago. I would not go back to those days. But I like 60, 70s more. The songs, the dress, the haircut - were very stylish even in Mongolia. Finally a question for your Granny: What tricks did she use to keep her dairy products for a longer period of time? I like your innovative ideas to help people who want work on their English. Thank you, Amy.
Hello Granny, I'd like to know about your first love...Best, H.
Hi Amy, the idea of going back in time is so fascinating. You know what I like, I like to look at the things in the past (as I choose them) as if in a film. I'm sort of sure that all moments in the past are recorded somewhere, and we should only try find the way to look at them. For instance you want the watch the time your mother was conceiving you; the moment you were born, etc just give the computer the speceific informations, press the button, relax in your armchair and...
Hullo! Dear all and Dear Amy, First, i want to say that this time the homework is quite interesting. Since i have known Amy's Granny grew up in a fishing village, I do want to know some things about Granny's childhood. Those i want to know are: (1) In winter, did the cold, rough wind blow in Granny's hometown? (2) When Granny's family ran a dairy, how and how much did the post officers charge for the transportation fee of the homemade cheeses and milk? Thank you for your reading Wish all a great weekend!
Hello Amy, well I need some time to contemplate before pressing the button...am I to return to a time when women had less freedom; am I to get back to a period when it was considered crazy to think of any rights for children and the oppressed? AM I TO RETURN TO A TIME WHEN THERE WAS NO BLOGGING AND NO DEAR AMY? Oh! No! Never...
Hi Amy, nice to hear of you every now and then. Please give my best regards and wishes to Granny. Will be happy to hear of anything she likes to share with us. Take Care, Gaitrie
Hi Amy, Nice to hear from you again and big thanks for your effort and time to reply everyone of us in the previous comments. Questions to your granny!..hmmm.. Any thing we can get back in our life but time. However, we can get the experience only if we could afford the time. According to me experience is nothing but learning from our mistake and there are possibilities that anyone can experience exactly the same but not necessarily to be a mistake whereas it can be some situation though its impact would vary. Likewise advice come from experience which is the only precious thing free of cost in this world ;-) ! Isn’t it? So without spending our time and if we want to get experienced that is possible only through getting the advice from our elders. So it is indeed a great idea interviewing your grandma. I have two questions what I wish to ask if I get a chance to put a question to elders, so to your granny Positive question: What should be the best thing that we should follow in our life? Negative question: What should be the mistake/situation which we should be avoided in our life and how should we overcome if such things happened?’ Let me give my answers to the above questions which are my personal opines Mistake that I felt could be avoided is Some of the years I wasted not being tried for higher studies after getting my job. Best thing that we should follow in our life: Never ever lose hope!. Convey my regards to your grandma Ciao,
Hi, Amy. These are quizes from me to Granny. 1.Please list the most needed 3-5 things in life. 2. Did you achieve it yet? 3.How can you reach to your goal? 4. Do the needed gain more benefit for you ?5.Why is it so importance? That are all my questions. I hope it is too late, but I will try to know because of busy days. Thanks.
Hi! Wonderful idea this blog. I am going to put it among my favourites. I am an English teacher from Italy..ready to go on a camping holiday to the Isle of Wight...after reading your post I am quite worried about the weather! ...Yes, Italians with all their brautiful seaside may love to come to England anyway!!
Thanks for all your contributions. This blog has now closed and can no longer accept new comments.
