Hello Xuan and everyone,
How are you all doing this evening? I see that lots of comments have suddenly appeared on the blog. I think its because there has been a bank holiday in the UK and the BBC office was closed yesterday, so there was no-one to moderate the comments. So thank you to everyone who has posted a comment. Here are my replies to the posts from Sunday.
Hello Guzin! We are very happy to have you blogging with us and thank you for your long post. I hope that when I get to be 50, I am like you. I think it is great, the way you are using your retirement to learn new skills, like English, to travel, and to discover new things. You prove to us all that age is not a barrier to doing anything you want. Do you know the expression, ‘you’re only as old as you feel’. This means that if you think you are old, then you will probably feel old. If you think you are young, you will feel young and have lots of energy. I hope you don’t get discouraged too often. By the way, Steve (my husband) has visited Izmir and said he had a lovely time. He had a long trip to Turkey a few years ago. And we have a soft spot in our hearts for Turkey, as we got engaged in Istanbul at the top of Galata Tower (Steve proposed to me there at sunset in September 1999…) which you can see in the next shot.

Hello Concetta – I don’t think that we have ever blogged before, so hello and nice to meet you! You got the vocabulary definitions correct. Where in Italy do you live? Tell us a little bit more about yourself, when you have the time.
Hello Felicitas. Thank you so much for your long post. You would get on very well with my mum. She is also a believer in letter writing and she works very hard to keep this method of communication alive. Some people call letters ‘snail mail’, because nowadays it is a very slow method of communication. But, there is something really nice about receiving a letter. You can take it with you, you can read it again and again, it’s a tactile as well as a mental experience. It’s exciting to find a letter in your letterbox, don’t you think? Despite all this, I still find it difficult to find the time to actually sit down and write a letter. I like to send my family photos of the kids and try to buy nice picture greeting cards to send to them. Do you write your letters on paper, or on cards? Good luck with your conversation classes. It’s a good idea for your teacher to tell you the subject in advance – I think I might try this with one of my classes this week.

(image from i146.photobucket.com/.../snailmail.jpg)
Now, here is a question for everyone. It is true that the art of writing a letter is dying, as people use email more and more, and people don’t want to carry paper things around with them. What about books – do you think that paper books will ever be totally replaced by electronic books? How would you feel about this? I’ll tell you what I think tomorrow.
Hello Merce. You ask me an interesting question about the price of flats in Bangkok. Do you know the expression, ‘how long is a piece of string’? This means that there are many, many possible answers to your question. You could pay $100 per month or $10,000. And it’s hard to give you an average price, as it depends on a lot of factors: area of the town, type of accommodation, which floor you live on, if you live in a tall apartment block (higher floors are more expensive). What Steve and I feel, is that London is around 4 times more expensive that Bangkok. For example, we currently live right in the centre of town – for us to afford a similar flat in London, in an equivalent location, would cost us 4 times as much as it does here. This is a generalisation and only our opinion – others might disagree. For food, again you could pay less than $1 to eat noodles in a street-side food bar, or over $300 to eat a 3-course meal, with wine, in a top hotel. But this is one of the things I like about Bangkok – whatever your income, or lifestyle, there is a place for you. You can find your niche. Thai salaries are very low by western standards, but people have a much larger support network, as they live in extended families so all resources are shared. Here is something you might find interesting, and more accurate than my waffle! Mercer (this is a Human Resource Consulting group) have just produced an updated survey on the cost of living in different countries. I have attached a link here. http://www.mercer.com/costofliving If you read it, let me know what you think.
Hello Mahjabeen. You asked me about Thai food, which is one of my favourite topics. Tom Yum is not exactly like Chinese chicken corn soup. Tom Yum is a clear soup, made with stock, lemongrass, onions, galangal (ginger) and either vegetables, chicken or prawns. It is extremely tasty. If you add coconut milk to the soup, it becomes Tom Kha, which means soup with coconut. My favourite Thai food is chicken green curry, which is like a thick Tom Kha and is quite spicy. I could eat it until it comes out of my ears (do you know this expression – it means I could eat a lot of it). What foods do you like?

Hello Cris. Great to hear from you again. To be honest, I know lots of Thai people at work, but it is difficult to make really close Thai friends because I don’t speak the language. However, I am having lessons and will get there with time. Most friends we have here are either through work or parents of kids who go to Josh's school. From our travels, we have various friends dotted around the globe but our best friends, really, are those we have left behind in the UK. I have just joined a new mother and baby group, so I am hoping I can meet some more people through that. You are right about pouring a drink in the UK. When you start to pour someone a drink, you tell them to ‘say when’ which means ‘tell me when I have given you enough to drink’. When you have been given all that you want, you say ‘when’ to make the other person stop pouring. Why do we do this? That’s a good question – I don’t know.
Hello Manu. Thank you for finally plucking up the courage to write a post. Your course in translation and interpreting sounds really interesting. Why did you choose this line of study – do you plan to work as an interpreter? This makes me think of the film with Nicole Kidman, The Interpreter. Have you seen it? In the film, Nicole works at the UN headquarters in New York, and she unearths (this means discovers) a plot to assassinate a foreign head of state (I can’t remember who, exactly…). Please do keep blogging and tell us more about yourself.
Hello Habooba and good to hear from you again. How are you doing? You are right – where has Pary gone? We haven’t got the place by the lake yet, but we are working on it. Steve went to see another place today and I am looking at one tomorrow. Best Wishes to you.
Hello Maryam – your post made me smile, because my post on the day after you wrote your comment was all about me getting angry. So, to answer your question, I don’t often get angry but occasionally I do. What about you? Do you ever lose your cool (another way of saying ‘do you get angry’)?
Hello Maione. Well done for doing the vocabulary questions, which you guessed correctly. Thank you also for your good wishes for our house hunting.
Hello Filippo – did seeing Steve bring back memories of you playing with your dad? My dad was not good at cooking either. He could just about cook by following a recipe ‘to the letter’ (this means ‘exactly’, ‘without deviation’) but I think that the sign of a good cook is that you can take a recipe and adapt it. It might say ‘add 2 large onions’ but you might think that it is better to add ‘1 small onion and some garlic’ instead. A good cook is flexible, adaptable and creative, in my opinion. Generally, my dad was none of these things when it came to cooking (he would admit this – I am not being disloyal to my dad), but he did have some signature dishes that he made very, very well. Later in life he became a big fan of Indian cooking, and he could make a mean (i.e. a good) lamb curry. Now that I will never forget! Anyway, Fili, what do you think makes a good cook?
Talking of food, Maryam and Habooba, can you tell us about any typical food dishes from Iran? I am asking because I know nothing about Iranian food. And for everyone, can you tell us about any dishes / meals that you will never forget?
Hello Jeronimo14. I have to ask you, is this your real name? Is this what your friends call you? Ho ho, just teasing you. If it is a secret, then you don’t have to tell us. You asked me about apartment sizes. The apartment we currently live in is around 140m2. This includes all the balcony space. The apartment by the lake is 142m2, but the flat Steve saw today is 260m2!!!!! This is way too big for us. The average 2-bedroom flat here ranges in size from 75m2 to 150m2.
Hello Belgian Antonio in Romania. How is your trip going? When is the wedding? How come your friend is getting married in Romania? I feel that there is a story here that you need to tell us… Thank you for doing the vocabulary definitions and you got them right.
Hello Lalit – from where in India are you writing? Please keep reading the site and posting blogs. Tell us, what do you do for a living? Best wishes to you too.
Hello Vladimir – so, you reckon all is not lost with Rachel and Andrei. Your counsel (i.e. your advice) is, as always, very wise. My sisters and I used to fight like cat and dog when we were younger, but now we are all very close and great friends. I have 2 sisters, Louise and Alison. There are a lot of green spots in Bangkok. In fact, from where we live now we have access to 2 parks; Queen Sirikit park , which is another huge park like Lumpini Park with a large boating lake though not as nice, in my view) and a small enclosed garden called Chuvit Gardens. I love this place! It is a little oasis right in the middle of the city. It has a small jogging track round the outside, fountains in the middle, beautiful plants and is well-maintained by an army of gardeners. I often take the kids there at weekends, so they can meet up with their friends. The next picture shows the back of the park.

Hello Muugii. Welcome to the blog and I hope to hear more from you. I am sorry that you broke up with your boyfriend but glad that you clearly have some happy memories from your trip. Please tell us more about life in Mongolia.
OK folks, that’s all for tonight. I have deliberately not given you any vocabulary definitions tonight, and I know that I have included some tricky words at times. If you would like to check the meaning / usage of any words with me, then you know where to find me….
Night night,
Anne

Dear Anne, What a question? Will paper books replaced by electronic books? I don't believe it. As I was saying I always liked writing. Of course, I prefer to write long letters. Only when we are on holiday then I also write postcards. Now books: In my opinion, reading is one of the most fascinating pleasures I know. So long as I remember I always liked reading. I can't imagine a life without reading. When I was a child living together with my grandparents, I often read in bed with a torch under the blanket.During the school-time we had well educated teachers who were interested in giving us a piece of advice what would be worth reading. Wherever you are you can take a small book with you. You can read in a train, in a plane, in the tram or in a waiting-room. My husband and I visited London four weeks ago and I was really surprised how many people were reading in the tube. I know the from Russia, too. When I'm reading and totally fascinated then I do not hear and see what happened around me. Of course, there was a change what I prefered to read. In a word, reading is a great pleasure; but it is also education and information. It can help to discover another world, other cultures, to understand better what other people think and do. It opens new horizons. It makes you feel happily or sadly. It is like a bridge between countries and people. Unfortunately, nowadays people read too less. Especially children should start reading as early as possible. And parents should keep more than one eye on that what their children prefer to read. Reading needs time and I'm absolutely sure, paper books will never be replaced by electronic books. What do you think - would "The sense of reading" be a good topic for one of your classes? Best wishes Felicitas
Hello Anne. I’ve just got both useful and funny expression about the length of string. There are many cases it fits perfect. Your rhetorical question about printed and electronic books, in my opinion, will never get the answer. I do like paper books and magazines more than electronic ones, but when it comes to open wallet I prefer to download rather to buy. There is one more reason. I’ve read mach more books than I have shelves to store all of them. At the same time I’m gonna read more than I can afford to buy. In any case, audio books are something outstanding. At that time your eyes refuse to read but body is not tired off, you may close your eyes giving them some relaxation and listen. Many thanks for answers.
Dear Anne, Latest developments in the area of communication certainly enhance people’s life to easier day by day. Most of people do letter writing in paper either for learning in school or where there is essential because of lack of computer and it is compulsory to write in paper. Most of people use direct method of communication either by phone or email. In my opinion, paper book will never be completely replaced by electronic books. The reasons behind this are, underdeveloped countries are unable to provide electricity and telecommunication to length and breadth of its country and all people living in underdeveloped country can’t afford latest technology. Most of people are even fighting against hunger in these countries and even hard to attain schooling. So, it is absolutely difficult to replace paper books in this field by electronic books shortly. Let us talk about people who love to read literature, reports and news. Most of people who love reading always prefer paper version than electronic version. Reading paper books give more satisfaction than reading electronic books and people can read them when and where they want to read. Certainly to purchase paper book, one has to pay once and they can hold book throughout their life and if they want to recall their memory, they can do by reading book again and again and feeling scene, scenario and situation while reading. Reading long books and reports in computer is much more stressful to eye than reading them in paper version. People can argue that in electronic version, people can read what they want at their fingertips and easy to locate it. It is easier to preserve electronic version books than paper books for longer time. It is not necessary to carry books and people can save printing, freight and transportation cost. All these arguments are true but human psychology is completely a black box and what they prefer to do can’t be changed by logic and arguments. Most of people prefer paper versions to electronic versions for self satisfaction. So, paper books will never be totally replaced by electronic books.
Hello Anne, I'm Concetta, I'm a primary school teacher and I live in a town near Turin, in the North-West of Italy. My two daughters (22 and 17 years old) and I are fond of English but they are better than me. I started reading this blog last September when I had my ankle broken but I never have written because of my shyness. I find it very useful, interesting and enjoyable. Last year, in July, I went to Newcastle for an English course for Italian teachers at University. During my stay I visited Seven Stories , it was ravishing and I bought some delicious children's books. About your last question I hope paper books will never be replaced by electronic books. I love being surrounded by my favourites books, they can't disappear... The last one I have read is The Caliph's House by Tahir Shah,if you like other people culture with its pro and cons you should read it. Ooops... I have lost my shyness...bye
Hi, Anne; First of all I have to tell you about my name: I decided it because I was born this day; I mean, in the Catholic Calendar. On the other hand,I love football;and this is the reason why I decided to put number 14; you know... some of my idols have number 14 in their backs. By the way, about writing letters or reading paper books, In my opinion I believe in paper books I can't imagine a world without paper books. I love buying books even knowing that sometimes I have no time to read them. It doesn't matter really. I am sure one day will be able to read them. It's time to go to sleep ¡¡¡ Bye and thanks a lot about your answer.
Hello Anne, At first, I would like to answer your question on paper and electronic books. In my opinions, both paper and electronic books will co-exist and complement together. When you're sitting in front of PC, electronic books are preferable than paper ones. In other cases, however, as taking a bath, paper books are more convenient unless your PC is water-free :-) (there is a word that better explains this but I forgot). Secondly, I would like to introduce myself a bit. I used to blog here before but I then stopped due to probably laziness or business. My name is Nguyen Vinh Phu, a Vietnamese who is doing PhD study in TU Delft, the Netherlands. Since you're living in Thailand, very close to my country, have you ever been there? Regards, Phu
Hi Anne. The images you post here are always superb. By the way, your smile is beautiful! We can see from the left upper molar to the right and this makes it look enchanting. Best wishes
Hi Anne and Everyone Anne, Thank you very much for your nice comments. I am very glad hearing that you had your marriage proposal in İstanbul. It seemed to be good choice to do it.I send best wishes to your happy family. Come to what I think of e book.First I want to say my partner is a writer and has many published books and an e- book.He doesn't write his e - book on his biography. It is said that they haven't been replaced the published books yet.In my opinion,e-books make the things easier for accessing, marketing, disturbing and the like.We spend much time on the road because of the traffic jam. While driving or walking, reading book sorry listening to book should be exciting. There is no time and place limitation to read.We can not find any excuse as to why we don't read after then. In addition that, other easiness: It is a good service for the people who don't like reading. But I would rather read any book by turning it's pages than read in e-media.with love to everbody
Hi Anne, How romantic your engaged proposal was! Though it's true that we write more e-mail letters than writing ones, do you know what? My friend M.Ellen from Ohio always sends me her vacation pictures by snail-mail and she tells me by e-mail in advance that they are coming to me. It's amazing the feeling you get when you receive them, smell them and touch them. From my point of view, electronic books won't replace paper books. I love sitting on a couch or at a cozy cafe reading a good book (you can touch it and smell it) and it's very handy to have it even in the envelope (I meant reading on the bed):-) Night night, xxx Cris
Dear Anne, I forgot to tell you that I'm very happy to have new readers among us. Welcome to you all! Besides, I want to share Guzin point of view about age. I can totally understand because I feel as if I were 30 but..........I actually am 48. I'm more active now than 18 years ago. As far as I'm concerned, what is the most important thing is your mind and the desire of learning and discovering new things. Then you'll never get old. I feel better and younger each day. Bye to all of you. xxx Cris
Hi Anne. I think that what you asked us about is sad but true. It was ages ago when I wrote a letter for the last time. I feel that email is not only faster than traditional letters, it's also more natural in some way. I mean that when you send an email, and receive the answer in few minutes, you feel it more like a conversation than a writing comunication. But for books I think it's different. I have readed ebooks, but I still prefer by large a paper one. I feel a lot more comfortable whit traditional books. Bye.
Hi Anne, Personally I do not think electronic books will replace paper books completely, at least for real readers. Electronic can not replace the touch, the pleasure to sit comfortable and turn the pages, the book's smell, ... I use electronic books too but for their practical aspect. I have permanently three or more books at my disposal in my Palm and/or Qtek. I read them mainly when queueing, when travelling, when there is not enough light. Of course it is useful to get the translation of an unknown word and some link functionalities, but .... Changing the subject and answering briefly to your question about my trip to Romania; The friend who is getting married is a former Romanian au pair that lived at home for a little more than one year and became as an elder-sister for my children and a daughter for us. The wedding will take place next Sunday. Till then we are getting to know better the Romanian culture, traditions and places. It is really a country and people worth to know. Antonio
Hi Anne! It´s a lovely Tuesday evening and I´m fine thanks :-). Oooh... I think I would miss so much the papers books if they were replaced by eletronic ones. Reading a book is pretty much like a ritual to me. How could a eletronic equipment replace the peculiar smell and colour of the book pages? In addition to it, the sensation of holding a book and touching its pages are delightful and unique! Well, it would be hard to me to get used to reading a eletronic book Anne ;-). Night, night, Ana Paula.
Hello Anne: First of all: thank you very much for your replie to my answer. Really it has be very interesting to read the web about cost of living in different countries. Curiously i havent't see Bangkok in the list of Top 50. I agree with you that one of the best things in Bangkok is the different prices about flats, food, restaurants ...... because you can obtain all the services according your salary. Here in Spain, the recent last years, the cost of flats has been getting up, and many people have difficults to buy a house or flat. Really, people in Spain prefer to buy their house, than to rent it, and many families do a big effort to pay their own flats. Changing the subject: It's a pity that the art of writing a letter is dying. Not only writing letters, generally I think people write less than last time. On the other hand I think that electronic books can't replace paper books because, forever, there will be people (as me) that need to feel the magical moment of having a book in the hands. It's all for now. I must do lots and lots of work. Bye. Have a nice day!!!!!!! Mercè
Hi dear Anne , What are you up to ? Yes , This is me after a long time absence .Very thanks for reminding me dear Anne and Habooba , It cheered me up although I 'm really sorry that it's our final week with you and I have lost golden time chatting with you .Talking about your past Blog If I saw a captive elephant , my feeling would be like you . When ever I visit a zoo it happens to me . I don't like seeing captive animals although it 's a nice place for kids to have fun and knowing more about animals . Any way listing that boils my blood : When people don't pay attention to their environment and keep going to pollute it seriously . I don't know if it is the same on over seas or not ? But here where ever that people use as a camping area it will be soon polluted with all kind of rubbish . When I see some people don't want to giving up some of their old bad habits and they insist doing those things , it makes me sad . When people are use to annoy and upset their relatives with their negative recommendation , it makes me up on my hand .When I see glass ceiling in our social it rises my blood pressure all the time .Being late for meetings , classes , offices , parties and etc makes me really angry .Wasting my time makes me angry and of course most of the time my hubby and my cheeky monkey drive me crazy .If I had more time I could ,my list would be long and longer .So it 's better to stop and say good bye .kisses
A short message for dear Habooba , Hi dear Habooba , this is just for thank you for reminding my absence . I always like to read your sweet words and I enjoy to be more familiar with your ( As Arabs ) customs . By the way I live in Ardebil city ( How long is distance between me and you ! ) and last year I had a mission to Ahvaz . Unfortunately our time was very short and I just could take a visit to Shush palace and Dinail Naby tomb and a very short visit to Abadan city . Although it was such a short trip I enjoyed a lot as every thing was new for me and my collogues ( The occasion was a sport game in telecommunication company ) . I hope to see you as a student Bloger one day for introducing our culture and country more to readers . Please kiss your son for me Wishes .
Hi dear Anne , I have just read your new Blog and I realized that you are curious about Persian food . To speak generally about our food , The main part of our meals is rice with different stews or Kebab ( Lamb or Chicken or beef BBQ ) . Also we have different range of potage or soups ( we call them mainly Ash ) . To name a few of our popular and special food here I introduce some links for Persian food recipe : Mirza Ghasemi : it 's a kind of stew which is herbal and serves with bread and I love it . The main ingredient is egg plant and garlic and eggs : http://icooking.blogspot.com/2007/02/mirza-ghasemi-persian-food-recipe-is.html Ashe reshteh ( noodles potage ) : it 's again herbal and the main ingredient are herbs , noodles and different grains : http://www.iranmania.com/travel/eating/aashereshteh.asp Fesenjon stew : which is my favorite and again the main ingredient is chicken and pomegranate juice and walnut . You can freeze this food and take it for a ling time and it won't loose its taste ! : http://www.iranmania.com/travel/eating/khoreshtfesenjan.asp Rice : plain rice which is main part of our lunch : http://www.iranmania.com/travel/eating/polow.asp Gormeh Sabsi : the main ingredient is herbs and beef or lamb and black or red bean and it 's easy to prepare : http://www.iranmania.com/travel/eating/ghormehsabzi.asp Here are three site for Persian food : http://www.iranianpedia.com/iranian-food http://www.iranonline.com/Iranhall/recipe http://www.iranmania.com/travel/eating I tried to choose the best links and I hope you will fine them interesting and yammy . Hi Anne, If the apartment whose picture you posted, does not costs exorbitantly, I advice you to stop the hunt and occupy this beautiful apartment having stunning beautiful surroundings. It is like a dreamland place if I go by picture posted by you. May I say that do’t worry about furniture, try to dump it somewhere else or sale it. I was very happy to find a solution to my problem of using quantifiers (you explained answer brilliantly) Thank you Anne. I joined English language course at my workplace. Followings methods are being applied to improve participants English: 1) Playing of Catch-the-Word-if- you-can (Antakshri) with English words 2) Dumbsheraz 3) Chinese Whisper 4) Role Play 5) Group Discussions 6) Free speech (extempore speech) 7) For listening skills we listen to English Music (with written scripts in hand) 8) Watch English Movie (Teacher asks questions after every plot) 9) Teacher teach phonetics according to British English (to eliminate mother tongue influence on English pronunciation, BBC developed licensed Software “Liqvid English Edge - Speech Edge” has been used for a long time). While learning English, learner has to work on its innumerable aspects. I feel English is most difficult but funny language of the world, is it not? Writing a letter develops writing skills, depicts writer’s personality and his mental level. It enhances love. Many existing writer are a product of letter writing habit. Steve’s way of proposing you in a air at beautiful place, was excellent. Anne, no doubt Steve is a stout reader and would like to have a list of a few books whom he impressed most. Have a great day.
Hi Anne, reading a book on computer put a strain on eyes and body of a reader. Reader feel tireness after an hour or so. So physical form of books will remain popular. Because you can go through it number of times, determine your own pace of reading, can keep it for children, need not to waste your time in booting of computer again and again. Cris, I hail your view on life. Thank you.
Hi Anne, what a long post this last one. I think everybody appreciates your personal answer to each comment. About books, I think and hope they will not disappear. I see that many of the readers agree with that. I wrote a litlle text about that years ago. Unfortunately letters are disappearing. I hope you find your new flat before leaving the blog so we can be informed. It was very interesting to read about life in Bankog.
Hello Anne, Your question sounds apocalyptic visions of a world without paperback books.I can't imagine that time.Long time ago I've watched a film called Fahrenheit 451 by Truffaut. This film depicts a story about how television destroys interest in reading books.Anyone caught reading books is confined to a mental hospital while the books are burned. My girlfriend lives in Cape Town and she's sent me a lot of letters and postcards from the nicest city in the world.I must say how her letters arent only paper and ink.She is very imaginative. In one letter she sent me a few fridge magnets. And then I got a letter with beautiful quotes and a key ring with her name.So I think that romantic love letters are irreplaceable with e-mails or SMS. I do like writing letters but not too often as I used to do.I hope my mail box won't be only full of bills but even so a lot of postcards.Hehe!!! My best wishes for all blogers and thank you very much Anne!!!!
Hi Anne, I might not be able to log in at the end of this month, so I would like to take this opportunity and thank you for your tremendous blog. I want to congratulate you, because you are not only a great teacher but you possess a big personality. Thank you again for your very very successful blog, hope to find some short lines from you in future blogs to see how you and your precious family are doing, lots of LOVE, H.
Hello Anne, thank you for your reply. Angry people are those, in my mind, who always want everything according to their own way and wishes. The way you felt about that poor creature was not anger; rather it gives us an idea of your great soul and your compassion to all fellow beings on earth. As to me, I can proudly say that I don't lose my cool. Everybody tells me that I possess a good command of self-control. All the best, Maryam p.s. I do try to write about Iranian dishes in my next comment
Hello Anne, I like your blog - probably will be coming back here more often. Good question! The answer is: no, no, no! They will never disappear. They simply cannot. I love to feel the book and smell it too... I think that is one of the biggest factors when reading the book. I can take my book with me wherever I go - I cannot do the same with the screen, can I? To be honest I find reading e-books extremely annoying. On top of that - my eyes get red. So, the paper book wins!
Hi Dear Anne I got really exhausted ,why on earth you answer none of my comments , is there any reasonS?! its my 4th time that I ask u questions but recieved no answer, whyy? you seem so kind and its unbelievable for me to think u are ignoring me
Thanks for all your contributions. This blog has now closed and can no longer accept new comments.
