Found a flat near the park
Hello Xuan and everyone,
It’s Saturday today and I am really tired after a long week at work. But, so far it has been a great day! We’ve been out looking at apartments this morning and we have found a lovely apartment, near one of the big parks here in Bangkok, Lumpini Park. It is a beautiful park, with a huge lake in the middle, where you can hire rowing or pedal boats.

If you get up early enough in the morning, you can see hordes of people doing Tai Chi, yoga or aerobics, and if you are really lucky sword or fan dancing (I am sure these latter two have proper names, but I don’t know what they might be…).

Steve loves to go running here, and there are lots of other animals – turtles, lizards, cats to name but a few – to keep the kids happy.
Anyway, back to our flat-hunting. There is one problem with the apartment. It is furnished, and we have furniture. We have spoken to the landlord and we don’t think they are willing to move their furniture out. So, maybe the search will continue.
After looking at flats, we carried on to a local department store which has a large play area for the kids. We plonked the kids in there to let them blow off some steam and then we met up with some friends for lunch. The girl you can see sitting next to me is my friend Carmen, with her son Andrei. Carmen is married to a Thai-Chinese guy, Ake. Just so you can see him too, I have copied 2 shots below.

They met in Colorado, in the USA. Now, I know that you are thinking what were a Thai guy and a Rumania girl doing in Colorado? Well they met on a sports camp and now they both work together in Bangkok, teaching swimming to kids. They are a great couple. Andrei was born 6 weeks before Rachel. We kind of hoped we might be able to get the 2 kids together. However, during their first meeting Rachel hit Andrei on the head, and the second time they met Andrei hit Rachel back, so we think that their relationship is doomed from the start…..
I think you can recognise Steve, Josh and Rachy in the back left hand corner of the photos. Next to them are Carmen’s mum and dad, who arrived from Rumania yesterday after a marathon 32 hour trip. They will be staying here for 3 months.
Over to Xuan, now. I think you did very well in this post. You are using a range of verb tenses quite accurately, like “I wish I had checked it” and “I am sure that you had a delicious meal”, a variety of conjunctions like ‘and’, ‘but’ and ‘so’ and some other good adverbs like ‘unfortunately’ and ‘carefully’. Keep up the good work! I am sorry that you felt a bit nervous (not * a bit of nervous) before the exam, but it sounds like you did OK. We did have a delicious chicken meal, thank you. We eat a lot of it here in Thailand and as far as I know, there is no chicken flu pandemic here (hope not anyway – we’re having chicken again tonight!). Do you mean that, due to the pandemic, you don’t eat chicken less now than you did before (and not *I eat it little than that)?
I’ll give you a bit more time to do the quantifiers quiz, if you have time before your exam on Monday. Good luck with that and let us know how it goes.
OK, everyone, I am really tired now so I am going to go and put my feet up with a cuppa. As always at the weekend, I’m going to leave you to guess the meanings of the vocabulary (use the context to help you) and I will give you the answers next time. Thank you for all of your posts and please keep blogging. Welcome especially to our new bloggers Guzin (from Turkey) and Lalit (from India). And welcome to to Felicitas from Germany - if we are to work out if you are the oldest blogger, then I will have to ask you how old you are, if this is not impolite :-)
Best Wishes to you all and have a lovely weekend,
Anne

Hello Ann and everybody I am very happy to be here.I will give some information about me before you ask me. I am 50 years old. I say the age when asked. But I can't believe that when I came the age. Who is she? is it me? There is a big gap between my calendar age and my brain age. I don't believe that kind of people saying that every age is nice. I don't want to get older. I realise there is no choice. Expected end is to get older. Don't mind my writing. No matter how old I am, I try to live like young people by learning, discovering, teaching and the like. I am happier than I was so getting older is maybe nice. I worked as science teacher for 15 years after then I was interested in distance education. I prepeared some radio and television programs to educate the students staying out of school and the women living in rural areas and like that. I worked totatly for 25 years. I am retired now. I use the time as I want. Learning english is my hobby. I think that the more I learn the less I know. I don't know what's what. There are many things to learn. I sometimes demoralised. But I force myself.By the way your photos are very nice. You are lucky to have happy family. Your children are very cute. when I saw the photograph (Bangkok) I said myself "I wish I was there"I am planning to go to South America next january. why not far east? Wonderful wievs, delicious meals and massage saloons as well as very cheap compared Europe. I wrote many things.I have learned "flat - hunting" It is new for me.Thank you that is all for now. warm greetings to everbody supporting the web page
Hi Anne. here are my answers to today's vocabulary: hordes of people = a lot of people; to name but a few = to name some animals; plonked the kids = left the children there; to let them blow off some steam = to let them get rid a lot of energy;to get the 2 kids together = to make them friends;doomed = destroyed. Good luck for your apartment hunting. Bye bye.
Hello Anne, you wanted to know how old I am. There is no secret. I'm 64 years old. As I was writing to you I have been learning English at an evening calss since 2004. First I went there once a week for one year. My first English teacher was a young engaged and helpful man. He encouraged me to do more. I did so. I went to a grammar course and to some intensive courses. This was really a hard time, I went to the English course three times a week after my work, and we had just 7 or 8 weeks for one English book. I had no problem to keep up the lessons but there was never time to repeat what we had learnt. So I have forgotten many things very quickly. It wasn't and it is not easy to find the right course. Sometimes I took a longer break, too. Whenever I went to a new course there were always students with very different English skills what is made difficult for the teacher to find the best way for teaching. At the moment I only go to a conversation course. Normally, we know the topic for the next lesson. This is very helpful because I have the chance to learn new words before. Learning new words is one of my greatest problems. I sometimes think it is also a problem with my brain. I can give you an example: I'm reading an English text and there is a word I don't know. For translation I have a look in my dictionary. But only 5 or 6 pages later there is the same word and I don't know what it means!!!Crazy!! What I really like is writing. I did it all my life. Unfortunately people nowadays don't like writing letters. I love writing and reading letters. Maybe I'm a bit old fashioned. I think I should stop now. I've written much more then I intended. I wish you and your family a lovely weekend. Felicitas.
Hi Anne: Thank you for give all of us a gift for our eyes with the wonderful shots of this park and, specially, the lake. Let me ask to you a quuestion: What about the prices of flats in Thai? And, what about level of life and salaries? I would like to know how is economy in Bangkok. Thank you very much for your blogs and I wish you a lovely and relaxed Sunday with your husband and kids. Bye bye. Mercè
Hi Anne, How are you? I think u have a great weekend. The picture of the Lumpini park is nice. I hope you will find a beautiful flat soon. Its great to know that most of the thai people wake up early and do excercises. I think they all are health consious. I have heard thai soups are also very delicious specially 'Tum Yum' its just like chinese chicken corn soup am i right? Have u eaten this soup?. Which Thai cuisine is your favourite?. In the last two pictures your freinds Carmen and Ake looks very similar to each other dont know why. Maybe because they are living with each other since so many years:). Tc and bye for now Mahjabeen
Hi Anne, I'm happy that you've found a flat near a big park. That surely will be very healthy for all of you. It's a pity that the owner doesn't want to move the furniture out.Hope you make the best decision. I like the pictures you posted, all of you look happy and it seems that you get on very well. How many friends do you have in Thailand? You mentioned Maria and now Carmen. Friendship is so important! I cherish all the moments I share with my friends. About the vocabulary: 1)TO NAME BUT A FEW is to mention only a few of them. 2)HORDES is a lot of people moving 3)PLONKED THE KIDS to place the kids 4)TO LET THEM BLOW OFF STEAM to let them enjoy themself freely 5)TO GET THE 2 KIDS TOGETHER to join them in order to let them become friends 6) DOOMED to be certain to fail. Anne, I want to ask you a question. Once I was told that in Britain when someone is pouring your glass or cup if you want her/him to stop you say WHEN. Is it true? Could the explanation be that since the person is asking you to say "when" you want her/him to stop, instead of saying "now" you say (as a joke) "when"? Hope you and readers have a splendid weekend. See you on next blog. xxx Cris
Hi Anne! My name is Manuela (or just Manu as you like) and I'm from Italy. I've been thinking about posting a comment here on the blog for months. Eventually I've plucked up my courage and I've done it! Well, I've been studying English for many years (for 12 years if you count elementary school'and middle school's years) but I can say that I've started deepening my English knowledge at university,I've been indeed attending an advanced school for interpreters and translators. It's just like an ordinary university apart from the fact that it focuses on the interpreting and translating field.Mostly I do translate from English into Italian, therefore I don't spend much time writing in English.I reckon my writing skill has worstened during the years, that's why I'm here! I wanna brush it up a little bit. It's time to hit the sack I hope I've not been too much boring and haven't put you off my comment.I'll keep on blogging Manu
Hi Anne, I pray next time you blog you tell us that you've hired the flat near the lake. I can only think of Josh and Rachel, growing up and always remembering their place near such a wonderful place...Regards, H.
Long time no see from Pary...
Hello Anne, do you ever get angry? I don't think so. You always look full of energy. Always smiling. A perfect wife and mum, HAPPY on Steve...
hello Anne, as usual i am trying my vocabulary knowledge:"to name but a few"to quote only some of them;"hordes"a large quantity of them;"plonked"<downloaded "to let them blow of steam"to let them give vent to their exuberance;""to getthe kids together"to get them become husband and wife ;"doomed"destined.Have I guessed?Good luck for your new house.bye<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
Hi Anne! Sorry to hear about the flat. I am sure you will find another one very soon. I keep my fingers crossed for you. Wow! Steve seems a very good cook and when I saw him playing with the kids it occurred to me when my father used to play with me and my sister. Unlike Steve, my father is not good at cooking. About the chicken, I had a chicken cutlet sandwich for lunch a couple of days ago. We often eat poultry in Italy as well. Have a good week, Fili
Hi Anne, At last weekend ¡¡¡ Anyway, talking about the flat, when you say apartment, are you talking about a small flat ( may be 50 or 60 m squares? I ask you that because here in Spain if you say apartment you are talking about a very small flat less than 60 m2. It's very nice to see in the pictures how the people are so friendly and the babies are so happy ¡¡
Hi Anne, Usually I write from Belgium. Today (tonight) I'm doing it from Brasov, Romania. I'm spending a week here because a friend of us is getting married. I have been quite busy these last weeks to write comments but I try to read the blogs everyday. Here are my guesses to the vocabulary. to name but a few = to give some examples; Hordes = quite a lot; Plonked the kids = to drop off (dump) the kids; To let them blow off steam = let them spend their energy; To get the 2 kids together = they would match; doomed = wrong, bad; Antonio (exceptionally from Romania)
Hi Anne, Thank you so much for your welcome note.I really appreciate it.I am 34 years old.Of course,it was not impolite at all. However,I think it could have gone on other way if you ask same question to some lady.I regularly blog your site and I believe, you are providing great help to all the English learners. Best wishes and regards Lalit
Hi Anne. Wonderful view at the lake, trees and sky scrapers. I wonder, were you gonna rent apartment in one of that buildings? As far as I know there is not easy task to provide proper air conditions in such tall building. You’ve been telling us about Bangkok a lot as crowded, hustle bustle city. Fortunately there are not only busy streets, but also green parks. Tell us more please about green spots of Bangkok. Is it achievable task to rent an apartment not far from park? As for relationship between Rachel and Andrei, I think all is not lost. My son and son of our friends used to be hitting each other when they where both kids, but now they are friends.
it's my first comment on this site. I was in Bangkok in 2005. During my travel I was visiting at Lumpini park with my boyfriend. Unfortunately, I separated from him. I thought that it's beautiful place walking and jogging with the family.
Thanks for all your contributions. This blog has now closed and can no longer accept new comments.
