Time

Hello Xuan and Everyone,
Well now I understand why we haven’t heard much from you, Xuan. You must be really busy with your exams. How are you feeling? Are you very stressed, or very relaxed about it all? When are your exams – please tell us so that we can wish you good luck. And lucky you if you are older than you look (I think this is what you meant when you said ‘my body age is younger than my calendar age).
I have been thinking about what you said, that you think you only have time for one blog per week. I would really like you to do more than this. Let me tell you why. If you only blog once a week, I will only have 2 or 3 more times to help you with your English. This is not very good for you! I would really like to help you with your English, but I need to have posts from you in order to do this. Also, part of the fun of this blog is that the teacher and the learner get to chat together frequently, and all the readers get to join in our conversations as well. If you don’t blog, then I can’t chat with you. I still have lots to write about, but it would be great to hear from you as well.
So, how can we help you to blog more often? I know you are very busy, so you don’t have much time. Here are some ideas.
(1) How about you set a target of 3 blogs per week Whatever you learn, it is good to set targets so you know what you have to achieve.
(2) Set a word limit for each blog, say 150 words. This means you know that you don’t have to write too much. The last blog you did was 155 words.
(3) Set a time limit for each blog. Don’t spend more than 20 minutes per blog. This means you won’t have to spend too much time blogging and not revising. Once 20 minutes is up, then stop writing and post what you have done.
(4) Think about when you have free time, which you can turn into ‘blogging’ time. How about if you are having a break from your revision. Do you know the expression ‘a change is as good as a rest’? This means that if you are working hard on one thing, it can be restful to work on something else for a short time, before going back to what you were doing before.
So Xuan, what do you think? I hope I am not being too strict with you :-) We are all busy with our daily lives, but somehow a lot of you manage to squeeze English into your lives. What tips do you have for learning English when you don’t have much time? What strategies do you use?

Since we are talking about time, here are some time idioms for you. Can you explain what they mean using other words?
· To have the time of your life
· In your own time
· To have time on your hands
· To move with the times
· Time is money
· To be ahead of/behind time
Well everyone, I need to ‘practice what I preach’ today (this means that you have to follow the rules you set for others). I don’t have much time today. I think I might have told you that I am studying for a Masters degree in Linguistics. I have been working on an essay all week and I have to submit it to my tutor via email tonight. It is mostly written, I just need to play around with it and get it within the word limit. So I have limited time to blog tonight. Steve has hardly seen me all week, so I have promised to take him out tomorrow night. Josh and I are going to meet some other mums and kids tomorrow morning, for coffee and play, then in the afternoon I am going to do absolutely nothing at all, apart from lie on the sofa like a great, big couch potato and relax.

Wonderful! Don’t you just love doing absolutely nothing at times? I promise you all a new blog on Sunday. Until then, here are a few responses to your comments. Remember, where I have written words in capital letters these are words that I have reworded from your original post.
Hello Praveen Raj – you are right, India has so many traditions, but thanks for giving us a glimpse of one of the things you do in Tamil Nadu.
Hi Pary – thank you for saying that I looked GREAT in my FLOWERY skirt. I love having curly hair. My mum has curly hair but she hates it, so she straightens it. Isn’t that sad…
Habooba – probably after 2 cups at one sitting, I shake my cup! Thanks for telling me about this custom.
Hello babu maliyakkal – welcome to the blog and thank you for your comments. Can you tell us about life in Jeddah?
Hey Elena! How wonderful to hear that while your daughter IS STUDYING in America you are learning English as well. Good luck with your own studies and best wishes to your daughter. Where is she living right now in the USA?
Hello Merce – I would love to visit Barcelona. Steve, are you listening… :-)
Hello Cris – good to hear that you are enjoying 1984. I came across this link about Orwell while I was leafing through the BBC learning site. I thought it might be of interest to you. http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/learningenglish/radio/specials/1758_blue_plaque/page10.shtml
Hi Ana Paula – I didn’t know about the 1930s Brazilian coffee crisis. How interesting! I am also a fan of espressos after a meal (I don’t like to drink anything to heavy after having eaten)
Hello Maryam – I have to admit that Josh is a very good brother to Rachel. Yes, he does ‘attack’ her at times, but I think this is because he forgets she is small and that he has to be gentle with her. They get on very well and are starting to play together more and more.
Hi Purplerose – I don’t get up at 6.30am every day. I am a morning person, but I like my sleep. I also enjoy HAVING a coffee IN the afternoon. Thanks for your long post and for telling us about little YunNan coffee.
And finally, nice to hear from you again Carmen, Naheed and Silwal. Thanks for your posts and please keep blogging with all of your comments.
Have a good weekend
Anne

Hello Anne: what a perfect afternoon liying on the sofa!! I envy you (in positive, of course). As you, I love these relaxed moments when, after a hard week, you can have your free time. What do you do when you are relaxed on the sofa?, do you watch TV?, do you read?, are you sleeping?. One of my magical minutes in my weekends is when I'm on the sofa, in winter, reading a book or, if it's summer, on the terrace having sunbath with a good book in my hands (Fantastic time!!) It's very important to have your own time, although some times it's a dificult thing because we have to attend the job, the family, the housework and the studies. And, really, what is more dificult is to have to do, at the same time, most of this tasks. That's all. I sincerely wish you a nice and relaxed weekend!!! Bye-bye Mercè
Dear Anne, Thank you for your corrections. Your advices to xuan are useful for us too. Time is like water in the sponge, it can be squeezed out. The more you squeeze, the more you get. I understand your situation that you must have to work while you are studying your Master Degree. I also had the same experience as you. It was crazing.I had to drink coffee one by one so that I couldn’t sleep in the late-night. Further to today’s time idiom, I guess it: 1)to have the time of your life: to use the time in your life 2) In your own time: during the time you have, maybe means alone? 3)to have time on your hands:to manage time 4)to move with the times: as the time flying 5)time is money: use time in high efficiency 6)to be ahead of time: before the set time; behind time: out-dated bsd, purplerose xxxx
Hello Anne! Firstly, I wish you good luck with the essay and your studying for a Master Degree. Linguistics has to be a hard science in my opinion. I am a very lazy person in using languages properly and in learning grammar rules correctly. So your four-point recommendation how to work regularrly is like made for me. I am ashamed to admit, I did nothing the whole day yesterday, except cooking a nice meal which I ate to the ful, of course. I think, I had plenty of time on my hands but I behaved as if time weren´t/wasn´t money. You may be sure I was working more than 20 minutes on these sentences. Good luck to all of you!
Hi Anne, i am a new blogger, my name is Simone and i come from Italy. I read your blog everyday and it made me really intrestead about english, your life, your fantastic family and thank you because now i know lots of things about Thai while, before your blog, i didn't know nothing at all about it. I have to apologyse for my english.I have been studing it just for 1 year so i have lots of problems...I hope you'll understand me. Please keep blogging!!! Simone
Hello Anne and everybody¡ I´m a great fan of the BBc learning english web, and the blogs are excellent for improving and knowing about people and other cultures. I´ve been studying with your help for nearly three years now. I like very much to study english, now my goal is in the future to pass the FCE exam. And here goes my definitions: To have the time of your life: when you are having a fantastic moment. In your own time: I´m not sure, maybe it means when you do things at your own speed. To have time on your hands: when you have plenty of time. To move with the times: to live according to what is happening at that moment. To stay up to date. Time is money: Time is important. To be ahead or behind time: to be avant-garde/or anachronic. Bye, have a good day¡¡
Hi all of you! I would like to ask Anne, what subject or task do you enjoy studying (in) your Master?.Perhaps the preposition is wrong! Your Master sound not only very interesting but of course very hard to study.I'm very interested in everything related to communication and how our mind works,it is a fantastic world! Have a nice weekend and good memory for all of you,me too!!
Hello Anne: I have been reading your posts since you started to be the teacher blogger and I've got lots of new expressions, ideas of rewording paragraps, opinions on different matter from different people and so on.I've really enjoyed the blog. Your current post's subject even convinced me to start posting notes or comments onto this blog. You are perfectly right when you say we need to blog to improve our communication skills, especially writing. Now, I'm going to explain the meaning of idioms you gave us and I wish you a relaxing week-end! My opinion on the expressions is: To have the time of your life - to enjoy doing something · In your own time - at a speed you feel comfortable · To have time on your hands - to have time available · To move with the times - to grow up · Time is money - not allowed to spent time · To be ahead of/behind time - to think carefully about your future Bye-Bye!
Hi Anne, Happy Mother's Day on Sunday. In Uruguay we have it this week. About time, my answers: 1) To have a lot of free time to do what you want. 2) do something in your own rithm 3) I am not sure of the answer 4) Accomodate to the changes that occurr through time. 5) Every minute is very important. 6) to be advanced ? I have not a lot of time in the Internet, I have 30 hours a month Good luck with your study.
Hi Anne and my cyber friends, first of all I want to wish you good luck on your essay. Secondly, thank you very much for the link you sent me. I read it all and heard the audio too. It was very interesting and I'll read about the other writers too. By the way, I love your expression "a change is as good as a rest". Nothing more real than that. I'm always very busy because I want to do a lot of things at the same time, but I reckon that when I change my routine I find that I don't get tired. You're right on what you advise to Xuan and it's also a good recommendation for us. I tried to guess the meaning of the "time idioms". 1) To have the time of your life: to have a wonderful time 2) in your own time: when you are mature.3)to have time on your hands: when it's up to you how to spend the time.4)to move with the times: to be flexible at every situation 5)time is money: time is something very valuable and you don't have to waste it. 6)to be ahead of /behind time: to do things in advance. Finally, I can say that sometimes I love to do nothing, just lie on the couch listening to music. Hope you have the time of your life with Steve tomorrow night. Take care. xxx Cris
Hi Anne!! I want to tell you that I really enjoy your posts. I think that you write in a very friendly way and you always have something new and interesting to say. So, congratulations about that and please keep doing. Thank you so much for all your advices about time. I always read your posts but since now I will take time to make a comment. By the way, I really believe that the time is money because the time flies....and it involves that the life is very short so we need to take advantage of it. I hope that you enjoy your relaxing momment the next Sunday. Take care, :)
Hello Anne, This is Steven from New Delhi (your former colleague). Hope you are having a great time in Thailand! I'm showing your blog to some of my students here in India. It's great to read your posts here on the teacher blog. I gave an interview about Bollywood last year when Amy was the teacher blogger. I am about to swap teaching for studying for a few months- learning Hindi in the Himalayas then Bollywood acting in Bombay. Love to you and Steve, Joshua and Rachel Steven
Hi Anne!I come back again after a business travble to keep touch with you and other blogers. I coudn't follow the entries and comments for a while ,but when i open my computer again i read all your entries and cris's and a lot of blogoers' comments . I enjoy what you have written about tai 's food and culture and the beuatiful photos which you joined to. Now i'am going to answer to your last request about time's idioms To have the time of your life · In your own time · To have time on your hands · To move with the times · Time is money · To be ahead of/behind time 1-to enjoy your self very much. 2-you have your free time. 3-you're free from anything to do or you arn't bbusy. 4-to change your ideas and develop them. 5-is worth like money you shouldn't wast it. 6-you're earlier or later than was expect. That's all for today.Have a good weekend!Anwar
Hello Anne! I'm new in the blogging area but I read every blog for 5 months and it's quite interesting and useful for learners of English. My English level is intermediate and I am working to improve it. And because time is money I will present myself in a few words. I am from Romania, I graduated Economic Studies (when I have the time of my life) five years ago. Now I am working in a bank and I am married. English is a hobby for me and when I have time in my hands I like to study it in my own time. To move with the times I guess means to do things which are according with modern times and to be ahead of time/behind time means to have ideas which people from your time doesn't have them. The first expression is remembered me about the movie Dirty Dancing. In the end of the movie the actress, Jennifer Grey said that she had the time of her life. And it's a sadly thing that Patrick Swayze is very ill. Bye-bye for now!
Hi Anne! I hope you´re enjoying your weekend :-). Well, I always bring with me a book written in English. So anywhere I go I can practise my Englsih while I´m reading. Another thing that I do is listening to music when I don´t have much time. It´s perfect to practise my listening skills :-). By the way Anne, doing nothing is absolutely wonderful indeed. However, it´s hard to find time in order to do nothing :-). Oh let me have a go at the homework: · to have the time of your life: to enjoy yourself very much; .in your own time: when your not working for your employer; · To have time on your hands: to have time when you have nothing to do; · To move with the times: to change your way of living or working to make it modern; · Time is money: every time you have can´t be waste because you can make money use it properly; · To be ahead of/behind time: to have very moderm/ old ideas. Well anne, I´m looking forward to reading the answers. Best wishes, Ana Paula.
Hi Anne, thanks for your blog about "Time". It is very interesting , and so are the images. Especially the big potato couch... Yes, it would be very nice relaxing on a big couch after you've finished an important, challanging, time consuming job. I have a question about counting the words when you've been required to write within a certain amount of words. I mean how the words are counted, do you count every word even the prepositions? Many thanks in advance.
Hello dear Anne It's the first time that i visit this site & pary introduced it for me. I'm 24 years old & my major is telecommunication engineering. My english is not good enough. I wish you & other students will accept me in your blog. I wish & I'm sure you will be successful in your assey. have a nice time. Bahar have a nice time Bahar
Anne, your Masters degree in Linguistics keeps you busy no doubt. What is more, your advice to Xuan was so good that I decided to make more effort with my English studies also. Hence I am not going to be satisfied only reading your post, I will respond to them as well. One needs discipline in life. One more observation about your suggestions to Xuan; they were so apt, so often I sit and stare at a blank screen thinking how to start. The answer is so simply, one just has to start writing and the story begins to form. All the best to everyone from somewhat dismal Finland; the weather is overcast.
Hello Anne, I hope you successfully sent your assignment. How did it go then? Did you have a good and big couch potato after that? Where did you go with steve?
Hi again. wanted to say that I liked Purplerose's expression! about time, "Time is like water in the sponge..." very interesting...All the best, H.
hello, anne ! wow it 's so hardful to study a master degree ,and i understood why you haven't written a blog in recent ,you must be focused on studying . and i also find a question with gerund and present particple , i found a 2 two sentence ,but it 's diffiuclt to find which they are . 1.doing what ? 2.what you doing ? and hope you helpful for me . thank you
helloAnne,I can understand you perfectly since I have had your same problrms years ago when I had to work ad my children were two little boys)Anyway when they become two adult people problems aren't over there is always something you have to do for them,at least here in Italy, things are like that in most families.About the task you gave us i am not sure but probably"tohave the time..."means to be very happy."in your own time"when it is more comfortable for you"to have time in your hands"it depends on your will"tomove with the times"to adaptyourself to new ways of behaviour"time is money"means you can't afford being a vagabond"to be ahead"to be early"to be behind"to be late.Did I guess one at least?bye bye for now
Hi Anne, Thanks for your reply as well. Last blog looked like an advice blog. I was wondering where I was! Kidding! Hope Xuan meets your expectation. But the advice DID create an interest in being a student blogger as well. I wish to do that within the next six months. Its great to know that you are busy all time. I would love too study Linguistics as well. Presently, I am little busy in preparing for TKT exam along with my work. But the saddest part is I don’t find more sample question papers available. I find only a model question paper available in the website. Even in British library they have the same old sample paper. I have only a week remaining. Any way, I am confident of a good show. Hope you had a nice week end. Cheers!! Praveen Raj
Hi Anne,This is the first time that I came here, thanks so much for your ideas about time. Thanks for all your contributions. This blog has now closed and can no longer accept new comments.
