Happy May Day Holiday

Hello everyone – and happy May 1st! It seems to be a holiday in a lot of places round the world. Happy teacher’s day to Pary in Iran, and Leila have a good holiday in Finland. Cris – I hope you enjoy the start of 1984 on your day off as well. Let me know how you get on with it.

Bye bye Cris and thank you for your final blog. I will miss you. You can say that we ‘met’ each other whilst blogging. And how interesting to hear that you dad was a photographer. I can see that you have inherited his talent. I am looking forward to hearing from you via the readers comments soon.

Well, it’s a holiday here in Thailand too, and I have come to the beach with my family. We have come to Pattaya, which is about 150km away from Bangkok. I took a half day from work yesterday to drive down and beat the crowds. So we have put Rachel to bed (she is much better now – thank you for all the good wishes), Steve is reading his new book (Millions and Billions, or is it Billions and Billions by Carl Sagan - I think its Billions and Billions) and I am in an internet café with Josh. Josh is pretending to type, and I am doing the real thing. It is quite difficult to keep a 3-year old occupied for long, so this will not be one of my longer blogs.

Geat to hear that Xuan will be the next student blogger. She lives in Vietnam, which is not too far from my neck of the woods. I visited Vietnam 9 years ago and had a wonderful time, but I bet it has changed a lot since then. I am looking forward to finding out more about modern day Vietnam, as well as getting to know Xuan. I wonder if it’s a public holiday in Vietnam as well?

While we wait for Xuan to blog, please think about corrections to the following sentences from the readers:

(1) ** In first place, water and ice (Adriana)

(2)** I can rely on fruits and vegetables for a long time without ever missing the meats or anything else (Habooba)

(3) ** I have never thought that fridges can tell us about persons (Merce)

(4) ** Any way I liked the beach’s photo (Pary)

(5) **Peoples who live in city area are able to used fridge (Silwal Kishor)

And I'll leave with you with a short vocabulary challenge. What do 'to beat the crowds' and 'my neck of the woods' mean?

Enjoy your day, whatever you are doing, and speak to you all soon,

Anne.

Happy Labor Day! All Malaysian are enjoying their holiday with their family too. I really enjoy the day with my hubby today. We were having our breakfast cum lunch at restaurant in shopping complex. Then we go for window shopping. After that, we rest at Starbulk and having a cup of ice blended white coffee. We spend a wonderful time there just enjoying music and reading books.

Hello there Anne, we also have a day off on the account of May 1st. You have set up a rather challenging homework this time. 'To beat the crwod' means to escape the crowd and 'My neck of the woods' means a particular place or area which you are familiar with. I'm just trying to make corrections to the sentences 1)In (the) first place.2)meats should be writtn as (meat) because in this sentence meat is taken in general.3)fridge not fridges.4)beach photo or photo of the beach.5)People who live in the city use fridge. Best wishes, Naheed

hi Anne I'm trying to correct the sentences an to guess the meaning of your idioms:1)In the first place......2)I can rely on fruit and vegetablesfor a long timewithout ever missing meat or anything else.3)I had never thought that fridges can tell us about people.4)Anyway I liked the beach photo.5)The people who live in city areas are able to use fridges..."To beat the crowds2 probably means to avoidd huge traffic, and"my neck of the woods not too different from the place I am familiar with.I have tried to guess .Bye bye

Hi Annie and happy May 1st to you too! It is a public holiday in Italy as well. Every year the Trade Unions organise a big free concert in Rome and it is broadcasted on tv. I am like a couch potato on this day. LoL Lucky you that you are on the beach! It is still parky over here! Cheers,

Dear Anne, This time I am sending corrections for sentences I have posted in comments in various blog. When I started to read them, I feel ashamed that I did silly mistakes. I feel really lucky that I got an opportunity to see lovely photos of beaches not only from student blogger but also from teacher blogger. (I feel really lucky that I got an opportunity to see lovely photos of beaches from not only from student blogger but also from teacher blogger.) You are absolutely right that fridge give away a lot about a person’s life style. Here, in Nepal, still most of people are in joint family system and enjoyed freshly cooked food everyday and used to cook food twice a day. Peoples who live in city area are able to use fridge and when I checked my fridge this morning, I found some green vegetables, a bottle of jam, a packet of milk, two bottles of water and some left over food. Corrections for other sentences: 1) In the first shelf, water and ice 2) I can rely on fruits and vegetables for a long time without ever missing meat or anything else 3) I have never thought that fridge can tell us about a person 4) Anyway I liked the photos of beaches Word Meaning: beat the crowds: To drive away from crowds my neck of the woods: Very close from your surrounding

Hi Anne, I'm here now. How nice it is having a holiday in the middle of the week. I'm glad you're relaxing with your family. My neighbour above us lent me the DVD of "The 3 tenors (Domingo, Carreras and Pavarotti with Mehta) and I could really enjoyed it very much during the morning. This concert was taken place in Los Angeles Dodger Stadium in 1994 and if you have the opportunity to watch it you'll be actually moved. I've also started reading "1984" and got immerse in it. I didn't know that both Animal Farm and 1984 were the books that brought Orwell world-wide fame. I'm also looking forward Xuan's 1st blog. Bye for now.

Hi Anne, Today we have also a Holiday, There is not many things to do. There is no transport service in Montevideo since yesterday about 8 p.m. If you don't have a car, you can walk or take some of the few taxis that are working. Workers who are in a Union have their meeting at 2 p.m. today. Thank you for this month. I see that the 2 questions about idioms were answered.

Hi Anne! I´ve got the opportunity to write you while my sister is having a shower. She´s doing an essay for the university and gets completely nuts if anyone tries to use the PC :-). Well, here are my answers to the homework: 1-first place; 2-meat; 3-person; 4- the beach photo/photo of the beach; 5- people. Oooh... the bathroom´s door is open. It´s time to bid you farewell :-). See you soon, Ana Paula.

Hi,Anne, long time no see,I miss you,how are you going? These days,I am busy with my picture which will be posted to my institute as a competitor. If it can win,I will get RMB 200.So I think it worth to be done,am i right? In terms of May Day Holiday,I have lots of words to say.In the last few years, there are 7 days to play,I can go to someplace far from my college to travel, what a good way to kill the 7 days time, but from this year, only 3 days left.It looks like a big weekend,I cannot go out for my journey. So I dislike it And May Day holiday is a consumptive golden week, whereas there are only 3 days now.So that I have to put up with a big amount of people to buy(or buying) some clothes. Ok ,my complaint is over. Bye.wish you family fine.

Hi Anne, I think to beat the crowds means that yo started earlier to the beach then the rest of the other people who are going to the beach. So you didn´t have heavy or strong traffic on the road. My neck of the woods means the other location is not so far from yours.

Hi dear Ann , How is your beach holiday ? I hope to enjoy it a lot with your family company . here is my correction : Any way I liked beachs photo , I think plural nouns don't take article , do they ? sorry articles are my weakness point in grammer . have fun and bye .

Hi,Ann I wonder how many sandcasltes you have made with your children so far.Does beaches in Tailand have crazy golf couses like in the UK? My son loves whacking a golf ball while he plays crazy golf on the beach.Believe it or not once he lost a golf ball because he hit the ball too hard. I am not a gamebler but I love to do a little gambling which I put 20p coinS in A machine whenever we go on beaches or holidays. How about you? Have a greak weekend and see you around!

Hello Anne, for the 1st correction there's another way we can say; 'on the first shelf'. It's really interesting that we are given a chance to make corrections. bye, Naheed

Hi Anne. I'm looking forward to see the correction to my phrase. Bye. Adriana

Hi Anne: As you, I'll miss to Cris. I hope she will be present in the blog with her comments. But I think we will enjoy togheter with Xuan. I wish to know many things about her country. It's very interesting for me. See you soon. Mercè

Hi, everyone , First time here, and good to know this blog. May 1 is labor day in Taiwan, we got an extra holiday for Friday as May 1 falled in Thursday. My great boss just granted us an extra day off. Isn't it nice...

Hello, Anne! I was really surprised to learn that there's May Day holiday in Thailand. I used to think it was purely a European and Russian public holiday. In fact, in Russia it used to be a politically coloured occasion - with meetings and demonstrations all over the country. Today, everybody is absolutely happy to celebrate it just like a lovely spring holiday when trees get covered in light-green leaves and there are first spring flowers in our gardens in the country. Indescribable! So most people go to the country houses -dachas - to enjoy themselves and to admire the beauty of nature!

Hello, Anne!A good day to all of you. This is the first time I visit this blog, and I think it's a good opportunity to improve my english. You know, I have a lot of problems when I speak english, because I'm not sure of my vocabulary. So in September I would go in London and stay there for 6 months.I hope I will visit you as soon as possible.

Hi teacher, I spend the Happy Labor Day in New York because of the work of my wife there. So we decide to stay together. I'll go again (two time a week) and I decide to remain in New York a soon as possible. Do ypu think my english is so bed? Thank for your answer. Best regards

Thanks for all your contributions. This blog has now closed and can no longer accept new comments.
