What's in your fridge?

(image from www.bradburysappliances.co.uk)

Hi Cris and everyone,

Thanks for all the good wishes everyone. It is really kind of you to take the time to write – thank you. I still felt a bit under the weather this morning, but much better than yesterday. Rachel is still a bit sick, poor little thing, but putting a brave face on it. It’s not stopping her playing with her lego though, but she is sleeping more than usual.

Cris, your corrections were almost spot on. I would just add ‘ever’ to sentence 1, so it reads ‘this is the best photo I have ever taken’. And I like the way you have become a ‘teacher blogger’, with all the FCE tips. Your advice is excellent. It is good to have a bank of words and phrases that you can use to replace and, but and so. I noticed one typo (spelling mistake) in the TO GIVE INFORMATION section. Can you find it? You do not need to use ‘in addition to’ exclusively with verbs. For example, it can be followed by a pronoun, as you have indicated for ‘as well as’

Rice and mangoes are two very important Thai exports. In addition to these, Thailand also produces a lot of the world’s coffee.

The movie lesson went well. We had a few technical hitches this morning, when the video equipment would not work, but we have a superb technical support team in the office and they jumped on the problem and fixed it very quickly. I think the students were a bit shocked when they heard the first film clip. It is always really hard to watch a movie in a foreign language, especially without subtitles. However, once you have heard the dialogue a couple of times, and you get used to the sound of the voices and the speed of speech, it becomes a little easier.

Thank you James for spotting my mistake with the vocabulary. The word for S -- -- -- -- D – D was indeed SPLENDID and not SUPERB. And Hyoshil, I would like to see a picture of your fridge with all your vocabulary on it. I think that fridges give away a lot about a person’s lifestyle. People often stick notices, messages, memos etc on their fridges so you can easily see what things they do in their spare time. And also if you look inside a person’s fridge you can tell a lot about them and their lifestyle. Are they married, or single? Do they cook, or eat out all of the time? It is always a great comfort to me, when I go back to my mum’s house, to look in the fridge to see what she has stocked it up with for me. It’s like being a kid again. If you share my passion for fridges, perhaps you might like to read this series of BBC articles at http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/7147730.stm, where they take a peek at fridges around the world and what people keep in them.

Our fridge is full of water. You can’t drink water from the tap in Thailand, so we have to buy bottled water. We usually have a stock of fruit and vegetables for the kids, cooked rice (you never have to cook rice here – you just buy it ready cooked), cokes, bread, butter, coffee, lots of milk, eggs, orange juice, beer for Steve, sometimes a bottle of wine and always lots and lots of chocolate :-) What’s in your fridge?

Cris, tomorrow is your last day blogging. How do you feel? What plans do you have for the coming few weeks? I would just like to say how much I have enjoyed blogging with you this month. I have enjoyed getting to know you and hearing about Oscar, your family and cousins, your workmates, hearing about your travels and sharing all of your photos. You have an excellent command of English and you have kept us all entertained over the past month. Please keep in touch via the comments page and just keep on using English whenever you can. Take care of yourself and speak to you soon, I hope.

Have a good evening and best wishes to you all,

Anne.

Hi anne, What's in my fridge? In first place, water and ice. We are a small family and we don't eat too much so our fridge isn't too big. There are fruits like melon, papaya, mexirica, orange, apple, pear. Guaraná juice and grape juice are mandatory. We don't have many bottles like you in your fridge but there's one bottle of wine that my husband likes drinking from time to time and a bottle of milk that is brought from a farm. I have many juices concentrated and stocked in small plastic bags so that we can prepare quickily when you wish, mixing with water. Juices like acerola, mango, soursop, cashew, cajá, guaraná,açaí and so on. There's also cheese, onion, garlic, tomato, potato, carrot, watercrass, lettuce, beet, cassava, cabbage, yoghurt, cereal, urucum, lemon, shrimp, eggs, olive oil. Cooked black bean and rice. Some open packages of biscuits, lumps of popcorns and a mountain of chocolate eggs from my son's collection of kinder ovo that nobody wants to eat. He only takes the toy inside the egg an put the chocs in the fridge. Not that I don't appreciate the chocs. In fact they are delicious but apart from the hot temperature that doesn't help, I'm used to eat just one brand since childhood as a chocolate factory is located in my city so that I can't eat another brand. I don't know what to do with all these chocolate eggs here. I've just realised we have too much liquid in our fridge, maybe it's due to the hot climate. Well I think I must go to the supermarket! Bye Adri

Hi Anne! I´m glad to know you´re feeling better! I hope little Rachel gets well soon :-). In answer to your question my fridge has lots and lots of vegetables and fruits, light margarine, cottage cheese, eggs, whole bread, some filet fish already seasoned for tomorrow´s lunch and cooked whole rice, which I prepare twice a week before I go to work( it makes my life easier :-)). Good night and best wishes, Ana Paula.

Hi Anne, I just had to write and wish you all the best before you say goodbye. I don´t know where the month has gone to? My days have been very hectic; I even have had to stop reading the newspaper, which is really beyond to my comprehension. Luckily, it is a public holiday here in Finland tomorrow, as many of you know it is the First of May. My sincere thanks for your writings Anne; they have been very useful for our language studies. By the way I was very surprised to read that you buy your rice ready cooked.

Hi Anne, I'm back. In fact, my husband and son both were feeling under the weather for the past few days and I had to look after them. Thanks God, they're both better now, and I can freely visit the blogs and read your ever interesting blogs. I had to go back and read the blogs I already missed. Something is certain; I should visit Thialand very soon and taste all the fruits and vegetables available there. I'm not a total vegetarian, but I can rely on fruits and vegtables for a long time without ever missing the meats or anything else...So you can guess my fridge is always full of all kinds of fruits and vegs. Fish you can always find in our freezer, and dried dates and all kinds of dairies because my husband cannot live without them. And there is always a war in our place, because my ten-year-old son is the great enemy of all the foods I mentioned before, and instead he swallows all kinds of fast food without any discrimination. With all the junk food and ice-cream and the chocklets, you're right, he's already overweight...

Hi again Anne, I forgot to thank you for your kind answers to each of us individually. It feels so nice to see that you read all the messages and find out that it's a two-way communication. Thank you again IT IS a big MOTIVATION for me to go ahead and try to make progress, all the best, H.

Hi Anne: I'm happy that you are feeling better. Today your blog is very interesting. I have never thought about that fridges can "tell us" about persons. But I agree with you that it's true. On my fridge I have pictures and "magnets" that my family and I have bought abroad during our travels. This objects bring our mind good memories of the holidays. Inside our fridge we usually have lots and lots of fruits:) All my family love to eat fruits. On the other hand we also have milk, eggs, water, beer, vegetables, and cheese. By the way, April is ending. I hope keeping in touch with you next month. I really enjoy blogging with you all. Finally, today I'm happy becouse tomorrow, 1st of May is holiday because we celebrate de Work's Day. So, I have a very long weekend because on Friday I don't work: four days relaxing, reading, walking on the beach, spending time with my family ..... I wish the best to you all. Mercè

Hi dear Ann and all readers , What are you all up to ? I hope you feel better today and Rachel , too . My son was ill from Saturday until Monday , too. I t was a kind of food poisoning with terrible tummy ache . He had n't got an illness like that before . Some say there are some virus in the air and some says it 's because of new spring fruits .Tomorrow is Iran 's official Teacher day so all dear teachers : **** HAPPY IRAN 'S TEACHER DAY **** . I want to say something about fruit . I think you will find it interesting as in Iran you always have to buy fruit in large amount . For example for have a slice a watermelon you have to buy a complete watermelon . That 's the same for other fruit , too . I liked the idea of buying cooked rice , too. In Iran , rice is main part of our meal but it 's not common to buy ready to eat rice , every day . Any way I liked the beach 's photo and when you like your mother fridge when you visit UK I know what do you mean as my mom used to do that when I was student in another city . We are lucky that yet we have time to chit – chat with you over next month . I can't wait to know who is going to be the next month student Bloger . Have a nice week and so long .Xxx0

Hello Anne, sounds you are up on your feet and feeling better and your Rachel is also playing around. What's in my fridge? These days, not much, it's due to frequent power load shading. We usually have vegetables, jars of home made pickles and jams, my mum's favourite stock of green chillies, yoghurt, fruits and some leftover food. A little note for Adri: Adri you need not to worry about the chocs in your fridge, you can send them to me:). Best wishes to everyone, Naheed

Hi, I am glad you are feeling better. The fridge at home is still my mother's territory. She is old now but she continues to cook, good for me as I dont like to do it. There is milk, yogur, soup, vegetables, sometimes meat, fish or chicken, eggs, and no chocolate. If this was your last blog, best wishes for you and your interesting work.

Dear Anne, You are absolutely right that fridge give away a lot about a person’s life style. Here, In Nepal, still most of people are in joint family system and enjoyed freshly cooked food everyday and used to cooked food twice a day. Peoples who live in city area are able to used fridge and when I checked my fridge this morning, I found some green vegetable, a bottle of jam, a packet of milk, two bottles of water and some left over food. In my family, there are six persons, my mother, my wife and my two children and a girl from our extended family. Life in Nepal isn’t so hectic and we can purchase vegetables as well as fruits from local shop which is next door to my house. And, so many cycle vendors visit every day with fruits and vegetables. Another thing is that, though Nepal is rich in water resources, we are facing power cut almost everyday for about 3-4 hours. Almost all dry foods are kept in cupboard and my mother used to purchase daily needs in monthly basis and keeps every things in stock. It is hard to remember that when I cooked food. Everyday my mother used to ask us what we want to eat as vegetables and pickles, and prepares food as we wish. Another thing, generally we don’t use alcoholic drink in front of my mother except special family gathering is arranged. Since two persons of family members are vegetarian, we used to purchase freshly made chicken or mutton what we require for that particular day. So, almost all time, my fridge contains vegetables, some fresh fruits and milk.

nne it is so interesting to read about you, your family and your life in Thailand.I have just come back from a wonderful holiday on the same lake whre the actor George Clooney bought his house ,the lake the writer A.Manzoni celebrated in his masterpiece The Bethrothed" and ,not surprisingly I found my fridge sadly empty,The first thing i have had to do was to go to the nearest supermarket to stock it up with vegetables, fruit, strawberries and bananas to make a fruit salad, and to dress it some ice cream .I couldn't forget fresh tomatoes to dress pasta and some steaks:we aren't vegetarians. In my fridge there is always milk, water and beer.Everithing will be eaten in two days especially if I have some guests as always happens during the week.If you like I can send you some pictures of the lake.Bye Bye for now

Hi, Anne! I'm Juliana, from Brazil, and this is my first time here on BBC Learning English Blog, although I´ve been having a lot of fun on BBC L.English and BBC Languages for a while... About my fridge... well, at home it's just me and mom, and she doesn't like cooking at all. I enjoy cooking, but only on holidays, or whenever I have a lot of spare time... which is almost never lol. So, basically we've got rice, butter, milk, cheese, jam, eggs, chicken, fruits and some dessert now and then. Have a nice weekend! Ju.

Hi Anne, this is the first time I write a comment to you. My English isn't very good but I want to improve through your blog and the BBC learning English.com. My fridge isn't very big, but there are lots of stuff , just like bottle of water, fruits, hams, cheese, eggs, etc. I drink cold water everyday even in winter. So my fridge always have bottles of water. Let me share something in Hong Kong. There is the torch relay in recent days. All the Hong Kong people are looking forward this great international event. As a Hong Kong student, I feel shame about the Hong Kong education system. Every English teachers only teach us in a boring way. They just told us to do some dull exercises and do some useless corrections. I don't think is that way, we could learn proper English. That's why we, Hong Kong students have been criticized. Please forgive me that my English isn't very well and not easy to read, I hope my English will be improved quickly.

Hi Anne! I hope you feel better. What's in my fridge? Well i've vegetables, fruits, milk, bread, cheese, water and a piece of my birthday cake...I use to have lunch at the restaurant anytime so my fridge isn't full of food. You teached me many new words and it helps me to remember the English i learned a long time ago. It's still hard to write in another language because the words are flying away from my mind and my fingers. I want to say thank you for all your posts and for spent your time with students like me. Good Luck! Take care!

Hello, Anne! My fridge just stops working, so there are not too many things: some vegetables, a chicken leg and ice-cream. I don’t like to cook so it is enough for me. Take care about yourself,

Hi Anne, You rated Chris English as an excellent one. It’s true. More than your assessments, the encouragement of yours surely help her to achieve more. Very few teachers have this quality of praising the students for their constant effort. I have noticed from the beginning of this month that you have been supporting Chris and other readers to learn in better way by encouraging. Definitely it’ll help us to learn English enthusiastically.

Thanks for all your contributions. This blog has now closed and can no longer accept new comments.
