'Early worm' or 'night owl'?
Hi All,
It’s 6am and I am up and blogging. Why on earth am I up this early? Well, poor little Josh had a really bad nightmare a couple of hours ago. I got up to give him a cuddle and then couldn’t get back to sleep. The thought of tea, toast and blogging was too tempting to resist, so rather than just lie there thinking ‘Why can’t I sleep….!!!” it was better to get up and do something. Actually, I am a ‘morning person’ (meaning that I love mornings) rather than a ‘night owl’ (someone who can stay up really late). What about you Cris? Are you an ‘early worm’ (i.e. someone who likes to get up early) or a ‘night owl’? Or do you ‘burn the candle at both ends’ (i.e. you get up early AND you stay up really late).
I am glad that you feel more relieved, Cris, after reading my blog. And I enjoyed looking at all of your photos. The marina looks lovely, with all of the boats. Have you ever been sailing? And your book list is quite eclectic (i.e. varied). I also love Animal Farm and Sense and Sensibility. Trudi is right – go for Orwell’s 1984 and tell us what you think of it. If you enjoy it, you might also enjoy something like ‘Brave New World’ by A. Huxley.
I can believe that the kids below you sometimes stay up until 11am, but at the same time I can’t believe it (do you know what I mean?) In Thailand, parents also keep their kids up really late. Kids need to sleep! Obviously, there are exceptions, like parties or special events, but in general when you think of all the physical and mental development that small children have to undergo as they grow and develop, they really do needs loads of sleep. I think that Josh is having disturbed sleep because of some of the cartoons he watches, but Steve disagrees. Young kids are so impressionable - surely what they watch on TV must affect them? What do you think?
I promised you all some photos of my sister’s wedding. She has just got back from her honeymoon so photos are flying across the internet. Let me show you some and tell you about the day. But, I have blanked out some of the words. Can you guess what they are? I have provided a list of words at the end for you to choose from, but if you want to make it harder for yourself, then don’t look at the list of words. Fill in the blanks with a word you think is correct, using the context to help you guess the missing word, then compare your words with the ones on the list. Check whether you got anything the same or similar, or are your words completely different? Answers in my next blog.
It was an (1)___________ day. We (that is the bride Louise, my other sister Alison, bridesmaid Kate and myself) went off to the hairdressers first thing in the morning to have our hair done. Then we all jumped in (2) ___________ and headed off to the wedding (3) __________, which was a small stately home in the middle of the Northumberland countryside. We spend a few more hours up in Louise’s room (the bridal suite, which was enormous) getting ready, doing our makeup, gossiping (you know, all the things that girls like to do…) and helping Louise get into her amazing red wedding dress. Isn’t she (4) ____________?
One of Louise’s friends was the (5) _____________, and she took shots throughout the whole day, so we have a really interesting collection of pictures showing different stages of the day. Here is a picture of Louise and her (6) ___________ just before we went down the staircase for the ceremony.

The wedding ceremony was held in the home itself, and was a civic rather than a religious ceremony. We were really (7) __________ with the weather, as you can see from the next family photo. It had snowed all week, and the morning of the wedding itself had promised rain, but at around 2pm the sun came out and we had glorious (8) ___________ all afternoon. That meant photos in the garden could proceed as planned! The little boy in the photo is Joel, my (9) ___________, and he is held by his dad Jay, my brother in law.

I love this shot. Matt, the groom, is in the middle, with his 2 best men Jay (left) and J.D. (right, friend). I think black and white photos create a really lovely effect.
We then had drinks, followed by a delicious (10) __________ with my favourite dessert (sticky toffee pudding) and then a ceilidh (pronounced kay-lee). This is a type of folk dance. You normally have a partner and you dance either alone with your partner or in small groups to music played by a small (11) __________ (violin, flute, drums and guitar). A ‘caller’ tells you what to do and describes the steps for each dance, then you just dance your heart out to each number. Here are a couple of shots (can you find me in the picture – I’m not hard to spot)

The most important thing was that Louise and Matt had a wonderful day. I was amazed that I managed to stay awake partying until 3am. Maybe I am a (12) _____________ (2 words) after all?
OK, I can hear the kids jumping up and down in their room, so it’s time to get them up. Poor Steve will need lots of coffee before he can even open his eyes. My husband is not a morning person!

Hello Anne, I was just making the picture of the wedding in my mind while reading your post, I would rather say, it's a vivid description. Your sister looks gorgeous in pictures. As for one of the pictures, in which you have quized us to stop you, are you in black standing on the right? I tried to fill the words, that have been blanked out, first before looking at your list of words, I got five exactly the same on the list. Here are my answers,1)amazing,2)cars,3)venue,4)gorgeous,5)photographer,6)bridesmaids,7)lucky,8)sunshine,9)nephew,10)buffet,11)band,12)night owl. Best wishes, Naheed
Hi Anne, That was real quick. I guess you are so conscious about what to do and that means most of us will have to increase our pace. I too agree with you. The child needs lot of sleep. But again You can’t force a child to sleep. The photos are good and your sister looks gorgeous. I tried without looking at the answers, except two, most of the answers were different. However once I saw the options, it was easy. Cheers! Praveen Raj
Hello Anne. Like you, I'm an Early worm. I get up very early in the morning every day and always I do the same. First of all I exercise for about 45 minutes to prevent backache. I started suffering backache in my early fortieth and this exercise help me a lot. After that I put my running clothes on and go to the street for a 30 minutes run. I like running before dawn because there are few cars in the streets and I can breathe air instead of smoke. After that I take a refreshing shower, and is then, when the rest of my family starts to wake up. Talking about books, the last books I've read in Englishf have been: The Pillars of the Earth and World Without End by Ken Follett and nowadays I'm reading the Harry Potter collection by J. K Rowling . I hope to have finished it before summer. By the way, I've never read a Harry Potter book in Spanish. See you soon.
Hi Anne, I have really enjoyed reading your post. What a wonderful wedding! Red wedding dress is amazing, please say it to your sister. I have done the exercise but I'll wait the answers in your next blog to compare it (I think I haven't had any problem- I hope ...) Talking about books, next Wednesday, 23th April is St George's Day and here, in Catalonia, it is a very celebrated day because it's also Books'Day. All the bookshops put their books outdoors, in the street, and many people go walking all the day and, of course, everybody buy a book (I hope it'll be a sunny day) Do you know this celebration? That's all for now. Bye bye Mercè
Hi dear Ann , It the second bite of cherry . The photos were amazing . happy wedding to your sister and her lucky groom . What a lovely idea to have wedding ceremony far away from city in the country side . The bride and bridesmaids were fantastic . So there are some other people that choose another color instead of white color for their wedding party dress , as I choose navy blue for my wedding party ( very unusual ! ) .About making kids to sleep as I said before it's a big problem in Iran , too . they just go to bed when all the lights are off at midnight .And there is hardly ever and daddy and mummy time , unfortunately .Please tell us yours strategy for making them to sleep early at night .About the homework most of my guesses were the nail on the head except od number 10 , mine was meal for that , could you explain about buffet . Have a good time and bye .
Hello, Anne! The wedding’s photos from your sister wedding are beautiful. Your sister is beautiful too as everybody on the pictures. I am looking forward to read your next blog. Bye-bye.
Hi Anne, it's a nice try and a awesome innovation of BBC English Learning blog. I enjoyed doung it. There are answers: 1.amazing, 2.cars(van, limo), 3.venue, 4.gorgeous,5.photographer,6.bridesmaids,7.lucky,8.sunshine,9.nephew,10.buffet,11.band, 12.night owl. I can hardly change the words of yours. See you around and take a good care. James
It is amazing that the your sister's wedding dress was not white. Nevertheless i think it is wonderful. My best wishes for her
hi,Anne I thought that you wouldn't answer my questions in the last few days.So I decided not to comment any more. But when I read this blog,I cancel the bad decision. Moreover,I will run true to form to comment on your blogs. And I hope you don't mind the words I just said. To tell you the truth,I am always a early bird in the last 21 years. And I am happy to be a early worm. Bye now,see you next blog. Best wishes.
Hi Anne, thank you for your exercise with missing words. I like it very much! The photo of your sister - bride is really impressive. She is like the princess from some fairy tales. The TV set is the only thing bringing me back to the reality :-) I like her red bridal suite. Our brides prefer wearing white bridal suite. The red one I feel as exotic, vivid, unusual but very interesting. Simple, she looks gorgeous. I feel, the photo of Louise and her bridesmaids is full of happiness. I hope, your smile and fresh look will last (almost) for ever. I am pleasantly surprised by your "unified dress" (as I can only guess from that small picture). Best wishes to brides, to bridesmaids and to all people of goodwill all over the world! :-)
Hi Anne, I agree with you. I prefer being a morning person rather than a night owl. I think, the time from 6 am till 12 runs slowly and you can do lots of things. But after 12 it runs quickly like water (we say in Turish like that)So if I get up late I can't finish my works. Thank you for your good writing. Have a nice day. Bye.
Hi. I've kept reading your lovely blog. I have to say that your blog is a kind of a good resource for learning English, in terms of that I can study both Englihs and a culture of other country. Following are answers of your question given by you. 1) amazing 2) cars 3) venue 4) gorgeous 5) photographer 6) bridemates 7) lucky 8) sunshine 9) nephew 10) buffet 11) band 12) night owl Are these all correct?
Hi Anne! Hope you are fine. Its really interesting to know that all cultures have their own new years as you mentioned in your previous blog. According to our islamic calender our new year starts from the month of MOHRAM and now its Rabi-us-Sani 08, 1429 A.H which is the islamic date for 15th April 08. Anyways, i always learn new things from these blogs. Thanx to the bbcle team. Now in the today's post you told us that you are an early worm, i think my energy level gets high in the morning and it gets slow down as the night time has started. I can say im also an early worm:). I've always noticed that euorpeans wear white dress on their wedding day. Do you people wear other colours too on your wedding day?. Now the time for the HW: 1. amazing 2. cars 3. venue 4.gorgeous 5. photographer 6.bridesmaid 7. lucky 8.sunshine 9. nephew 10. buffet 11. band 12. nightowl. All the photos are fascinating and i think you are in the last picture( right pic) the one whose head is down during performing ceilidh right?. Thats all from me tc and keep smiling. Tata.
Dear Anne, Your blog raises me a curiosity that what is a suitable word to describe me because I work whole night and got to bed early morning (to all others but late night for me) or even after 10 am. My daughter has never seen me going office in day time. Now she is 5 years. She was under impression that people should go office in evening time and other who are working in daytime are either going to school as she did or to campus as my wife did. Nowadays, she realises that one can work in daytime in office when my wife started to work. Now I have to face a lot of questions raised by her why I am working in night shift rather than in day shift. Is my office operates only in night shift? Similar more questions related to my office. When she visited my office (casino) 6 months ago, then she started to tell other that people can wine and dine in my office at night only. So I am working at night. I am working 6 days a week and I used to take off generally on Tuesday. This time your blog is really helpful to know how to describe pictures and general events. As I did my bachelor degree in science and master degree in management, I am familiar with science and management related words and always feels at a corner to write something in plain English but starting to write comments in blog help me a lot to put my ideas in simple English.
Hi Anne. Nice to read your stories and to solve some tasks. Wedding pictures depict warm and lovely atmosphere of the event. Bride is wearing red dress on, it’s rather unusual for Ukraine, too modern I’d say. I have a permanent chance to watch a lot of just married couples every Friday and Saturday because my windows look straightly at Memorial of Glory. Memorial is obviously visited by any couple just after official ceremony to pay respect warriors who gave their lives for motherland during WW2. Just married and maids bring flowers, uncork bottle of wine and take pictures in front of monument.
Hi,Anne Your sister looks strikingly beautiful in her red wedding dress. It seems that the colour goes well with your sister’s skin and I like the dress style and it’s absolutely adorable. I’ve never seen anyone wearing red wedding dress in my life and I must admit that the picture astonished me. Honestly it looks very exotic and gorgeous. Of course you look also elegant in the dress. I love black and white picture like you. Black and white pictures can be told or imagined completely different stories behind the world or scenes. I totally agree with you and I know for certain children need to sleep certain hours. For instance if my son stays late or is lack of sleep he is prone to get frustrated and throw tantrums. To move on to children’s disturbing night I personally believe children are very impressible. For example, one of my friend’s son watched a animal’s program which documented how small creatures to be killed or eaten by big creatures before his bed time. During that night he was woken up and crying out several times and couldn’t settle himself in all night. Bless him! Ann, I think mum knows the best, don’t you think so? Thank you so much for devoting your precious time to writing the letter and I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did.Your title remains me of this “ early bird catches the worm” Have a fabulous day!xx
hi anne.I wonder what time you go to bed at night to be wake so early.I am probably a night owl or better I have to burn the candle at both ends.I tried to do the vocabularyexcercise.I find it is a good method to improve my vocabulary.I likedthe photoos of your sister's wedding.bye bye maione
Hi Anne. This is the first time that I see a bride in red, what a wonderful wedding-dress! I am definitely not a‘morning person’ I need to sleep a lot, in fact I'm going to bed. Goodnight everybody!
Hi Anne! Your sister´s wedding photos are very beautiful :-)!It seems you all have had a ball there. Well, here´s my homework anwers: 1-amazing; 2-cars; 3- venue; 4- gorgeous; 5- photographer; 6- bradesmaid; 7-lucky; 8- sunshine; 9- nephew; 10-buffet; 11- band; 12- night owl. I´m lloking forward to seeing the right answers :-). Anyway, I´m a early worm Anne. Everyday I wake up 6:00 am. I start to work at 7:00am and stop at 5:00 pm. Sometimes on the weekends I want to stay in bed til late but my body get used to waking up early. In order to compensate, I always take a nap on the weekends afternoons (when it´s possible :-)).By the way Anne, it´s a pleasure to read and to send comments on your blog. You´re a kind teacher :-). Oh... I´m off to bed now :-). Best wishes, Ana Paula.
Hi Anne, I was a night owl when I was young that was before 40 years old. I am now a early worm as over 50 years old. Take care and see you around, James
Hi Anne, It's my curiosity, as people know that the owl is a nocturnal bird, it makes sense to say "night owl". And the worm does not regulaly get up early, it is weird to say "early worm". Another thing, I read "The early bird gets the worm " and "The early worm gets the birds", what is the difference between them? See you, James.
Hi Anne, in Chinese culture the bride usually wears red which means luck & all the good things. Contrary 'white' is the color for funeral. In Chinese New Year, if you wear white, people will feel uncomfortable and advise you to change your clothes. Nowadays the Chinese culture is gradually changed and seems not so much care about the color people wear. Personally, I like 'red' because people looks healthy in their complexion when they wear red . In a nutshell, I like Louise's wedding dress and her hair accessories. Thanks for all these good photos.
Hi back Anne! So my mother did. I used to go to bed at 9:30 pm every night except for special occasions. Among my former schoolmates, I was the only one who used to go to bed early . Since I am an “adult”, I burn the candle at both ends. LOL Anyway, if I ever get to become a father one day, I would put my children to bed early. Here are my answers: 1 amazing, 2 cars, 3 venue, 4, gorgeous, 5 photographer, 6 bridesmaids, 7 lucky, 8 sunshine, 9 nephew, 10 buffet, 11 band and 12 night owl. Have a great day!!
Hi Anne, thank you for sharing the moments of your sister marriage and giving a good exercise. Till date I saw the bride wears only white wedding dress. It is first time I saw a bride wearing a red wedding dress. You must observed during your stay in India that in accordance with culture, brides wear only Red. Your sister looks like a fairy in heaven in her wedding dress. It is good that you are a early worm. Early worms complete most of their daily routine work early in the morning hence lead a tension-free, smooth, disciplined life. Getting up early contributes a lot in the development of concerned individual, is it not? Religion always emphasis on early up as it keeps body fit. I am also a night owl. Developed a habit to get office late and other places, functions etc. Now office opens 9 am, I often get office late. Even If it will open 12 noon, I will again get office like to catch a running train. Here, we thorough spring clean our house on Diwali (festival of crackers, fire works) which falls in October or November month. Carva_ Chowth is a women festival (only married whose husband alive). It is celebrated for a long life of husband. On this day married women eats nothing till moon appears, go to beauty parlors. As soon as moon appears, they wear new costly dresses (mostly like wedding dresses). Pay their obeisance to moon in their best. Then women takes a blessing of her in-laws parents by offering them new dresses. Husband wherever he work, tries his best to be with his wife that night. In another terms you may call it as a husband-pampering day. Like a Thailand New year day, Holi (festival of colours) is celebrated here. I fill the blanks as under 1) Lucky 2) Cars 3) Venue 4) Gorgeous 5) Photographer 6) Bridesmaid 7) 8) Sunshine 9) Nephew 10) Buffet 11) Band 12) Night owl. Have a smashing weekend.
Dear Anne, How are you and your family? I am showing up here after two weeks, due to a family matter I was out of my town for two weeks, and also mentally and phycially I didn't feel good. I am very sorry that not showing up for two weeks. Thank you for your sister's vivid wedding pictures which were beautiful, your sister was gorgeous in that beautiful red satin dress. Wedding is a unforgettable moment in a person life. As Mahjabeen has written, christian bride use to wear white dress, and mates wear other colors such as pink, red, green and...According to our hindu custom the bride wear red dress/sari on wedding day. Anne, as you I am also an early bird, I would like to do my works at early because I feel very fresh and energetic in the morning than other time. As Thai New year our Tamil/singala new year fall on april 14 th too. Thai language has a lot of "Sanskirit " words. Swatdhi is a sanskirit word. Anne, your kids are very cute, how do you do all these jobs with very energectic and curious kids. I think that you are a wonder woman. As you have written, you thrive in husstle and busstle. I wish that I were like you. I did your home work and checked with other bloggers, it were all right. my kind regards.
Hi Anne. How are things? I was reading about your sister wedding and I´m very surprised thinking about the red dress, Why your siter choose that color it´s strange for a wedding, isn´t it? or it´s a tradition in UK? But the party looks so funny, and all of you looks very elegant. Sorry in my last comment I taught that one of your children was a boy,I feel embarrased :-) Well I have to go now, have a nice day Anne!
Great post and great wedding! I really enjoyed reading it! Congratulations! Hala
This is the first time I have been here,a friend recommend this to me and I fall in love with the "http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/learningenglish/index.shtml" as well as loved the blog.I think I am a night owl.before attending the university,I am a early worm ,and I sleep early at night, for I am a student and live in the dormitory, and, one of my roommates ususlly sleep very late, and sometimes he will make noises which disturb me very much,so I have to get accustomed to his behavior, and I am sometimes unhappy with him ,how I will I can have a good condition to sleep early. incidentally,I am a chinese, and some of my words maybe confusing. I want to learn English ,for it is important to my major in university and when I take the entrance examination of graduate student about two year later,English is also one of the most important subjects.
Thanks for all your contributions. This blog has now closed and can no longer accept new comments.
