Coogee to Bondi
G’day all!
(Should be good night really, as I’ve just got home from work!)
Let me tell you about my lovely beach walk on Sunday! I’ve done this walk several times since I arrived in Sydney, and it’s one of my favourites. It basically follows the coast from Coogee beach to Bondi beach, and takes about two hours if (like me) you keep stopping to stare at views and catch your breath after climbing hills! Some dedicated people like to run the route – really dedicated people who live locally run it on a daily basis, but that’s way out of my league :-)
Coogee

So, the first beach, and the starting point (or finish point, depending which way round you do it), is Coogee. As you can see, it’s quite big. I don’t know much about it other than that, as I tend to go to some of the more child-friendly beaches (coming up!). Coogee is home to a lot of backpackers, especially Poms!
Gordon's Bay
There's no beach here, just rocks (good for clambering over!), beautiful greeny-blue water, and a very evocative smell of seaweed!
Clovelly

After Coogee, you come to Clovelly. Clovelly is quite sheltered, as the bay is long and narrow, and for this reason it’s a very popular family beach – in fact whenever we take Owen to the beach we tend to go to Clovelly. The last time I took Owen, Harry came too and all they did was scoop up sand in their spades, throw it into the sea, get more sand, repeat … I’ve never had less to do to keep him occupied!
Waverley

Next up is not a beach, but one of the nicest parts of the walk – Waverley Cemetery. It’s perched on the top of the cliffs overlooking the ocean, and is a very old cemetery. I think it’s beautiful – it’s also interesting to walk through and look at the headstones, as there’s a real mix of people buried there.
Bronte

Coming down from the cemetery, you reach the next beach and home of a great place for a juice – Bronte. I always have a break at Bronte and get myself a freshly squeezed juice from the juice shop. I try to get something different each time I do the walk, and Sunday’s choice was pineapple, orange, lemon and ginger – yum! I’ve been to Bronte several times with students, as there’s a large grassy area at the back of the beach, with barbecues, so when I was teaching FCE we used to go there for a barbecue and do practice speaking tests.
Tamarama
The next beach, Tamarama, is very small. And that’s all I know about it!
Bondi

And finally, over some more cliffs and wonderful views back across the route, you get to the famous Bondi! Hurray! And by that time it’s definitely time for lunch, so what could be better than fish and chips at the beach? (That’s a very English thing to do, by the way, but I’m proud to be a Pom!). My only problem with fish and chips in this country is they are always served with tartare sauce, and in my opinion the ONLY way to eat fish and chips is with VINEGAR!!!!! (Let’s have a quick poll – who’s for tartare sauce and who’s for vinegar with fish and chips? Send your votes in …) And of course, to finish off, an ice-cream! Perfect!
Well, I hope you enjoyed that little excursion through Sydney’s beaches as much as I did! I don’t think I’ll be doing it again until summer’s over, as it was already pretty hot on Sunday, and it’s only going to get hotter! I was surprised, actually, by how many people were doing the same thing; the first part of the walk from Coogee to Clovelly was more like a highway than a relaxing stroll – we kept having to pull over to the side to let the serious walkers past!
And now for the serious stuff!
Satya, thanks for the pictures – the robot looks really complicated. How long did it take you to design and make it? I loved your story about the exam papers! It was a bit like James Bond or something! And even better, your use of past tenses was pretty much prefect, so well done! Goodonya*!
There were just two little errors in your post; I’ll put them below so you can have a go at correcting them …
1. I asked them whether they have placed it safely or not.
2. And do you know what we had done the next day?
Thank you all for having a go at the homework – here’s what I think:
After I had written my last post, I went back to the campus to watch some other events. I was watching curiously when one of my friends came and told me that one of the co-ordinators had scolded our friend. We immediately rushed to the spot to check it out.
• past simple: went, came, told, rushed
• past continuous: was watching
• past perfect simple: had written (had scolded – see below)
• reported speech: had scolded
• timeline:
---------1----------------2~~~~~~~3~~~~~~~~~~~~4--5------------------NOW
1. wrote the post
2. went back to the campus
3. watching curiously (this is a longer action, interrupted by 4)
4. my friend came and told me
5. rushed to the spot
6. scolded
You’ll notice I haven’t put had scolded (6) on the timeline. If I decided to write it somewhere on the timeline, would it go before or after friend came? What do you think?
Can anyone suggest any creative ways of saying “hi” for Satya? So far I’ve come up with a grand total of two – hello and g’day – there must be more than that, surely?!
I would love to hear about any walks that you really enjoy doing, so if you'd like to have a go at some descriptive writing, post a comment for us!
I think there’s a couple of things I really need to do – one is the give you the definitions for the past fortnight’s vocab, which I will do as soon as possible (not now, ‘cos it’s bedtime!). You’ve all been fantastic at having a go, and from what I can see, you’re all doing really well with guessing the meaning from the contexts, so well done!
And the next thing is to write about Aussie sport – watch this space! I should warn you now, though, that I am far from being an expert on this, so I’ll probably get Chris to read it before I post it in case I make any hideous mistakes!!
Goodnight from Oz,
Rachel
* I should have told you this one before, really – Goodonya = Good on you = well done!
Today’s vocab (not much!)

Hey up and Happy Teacher´s Day Rachel!!!! :-) Today we celebrate in Brazil Teacher´s Day, so I´d like to wish you, and all the BBC LE team an amazing Teacher´s Day. Oh your Sunday walk was really great! I love long walks and thanks for the pictures. The scenery is fantastic. Ah! By the way, it´s interesting to know you used to teach for FCE. I think you and your students have had a riot of time in the barbies on the beach. A very good way to practice for the FCE test. Actually, I have nightmares with the speaking part of the exam Rachel. Especially the part that you have to compare and contrast, oh I have to learn to use my time better. Do you have any tips? They will be very welcome :-). In answer to your question Rachel, there was a walk that I really like it. My city is surrounded by moutains and from my home I can see the Serra do Itapety(Itapety Mountain). The Serra do Itapety is part of the Mata Atlântica( Altantic Forest), therefore its ecosystem is very rich. Walk on the Serra do Itapety tracks are a fantastic adventure. While you walking, you hear the birds singing and see colourful butterflies, gigantic trees with unique flowers and leaves, different types of the most beautiful and delicate orchids. Oh and the air... hmm it´s so fresh you don´t want to go home, you want to keep walking all day. When you reach the peak of the moutain you can see all the city and beyond the sea cost. It´s so peaceful... :-). Oh it´s time for homework now: You’ll notice I haven’t put had scolded (6) on the timeline. If I decided to write it somewhere on the timeline, would it go before or after friend came? What do you think? I think had scolded would go before 'friend came' because the scold happened before a point in the past(friend came). Vocab: clamber (vb): to climb up, across or into somewhere with difficult, using the hands and the feet. catch your breath (expr):to begin to breath properly after again after run or exercise; way out of my league (expr): it´s not for me, it´s not my cup of tea (?); to be perched (vb): to be located in a position near the edge; poll (n/vb): ask for people opinion; stroll (n/vb): walk in a slow and relax way; hideous (adj): extremely ugly or bad. Oh Rachel, I bid you farwell now. My DVD has broken ( snif, snif), and I´m going to leave it at the technical assistance ( I hope I don´t miss it so much :-)). Have sweet dreams, Ana Paula.
Hello Rachel, Reading about your favourite walk I felt for a while as I was also there. When I reached at the Waverly Cemetery, I could feel the peace and tranquility of the place. I can smell those pineapples, lemon and lime at Bronte. Oh! the only sad thing happened when it was lunch time, I could only have the aroma of fish and chips and not eat it, Poor me! As for fish, I would like to share something with you and all the learners that there's is a kind of fish in Pakistan named 'Palla Fish', it is only found in the River Indus and is said to be the gift of the Province Sindh. Its flesh is very delicious. And yes, like you, I'm also for fish and chips with vinegar Yummm! I'm also handing in my answers to the vocabulary. clamber (vb)to climb up,catch your breath (expr) to breathe correctly after running, way out of my league(expr) that's not your forte, to be perched(vb) to be in a high position, poll(n/vb)opinion, stroll(n)a relaxing walk, hideous(adj) serious. Naheed
Hi Rachel. QQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQ I have serious problem when its come to bulding question sentence. Can you help me???? QQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQ
G'day Rachel(actually...may I say G'night?), I've enjoyed so much the little excursion through Sydney’s beaches, especially because I haven't come across any white pointer shark. :-) I've read the news about the woman who has fought with the shark. Wow, she was really brave. Don't you think so, Rachel? Ok I'll have a go at your homework... I think "had scolded" (6) should be written before the friend came on the timeline.(?) I'll also have a go at your vocab: 1- clamber: similar to climb? 2- catch your breath: recover from an exhausting exercice. 3- way out of my league: something not possible for you to do for some reason. 4- perched: to be located. 5: poll: a study that shows the votes or opinions of the people. 6- stroll: a walk. 7- hideous: horrible.
Hi Rachel (I'm not at all original with my greetings and you have already noticed!!) Task on Satya's post: 1. I asked them whether they have placed it safely or not. I asked them whether they "had" placed it safely or not. 2. And do you know what we had done the next day? And do you know what we "did" the next day? Task on verb tenses: You’ll notice I haven’t put had scolded (6) on the timeline. If I decided to write it somewhere on the timeline, would it go before or after friend came? What do you think? Scolded would go before friend come. Rachel It's 2 am and I'm exhausted to try to make the description of the walk I enjoy doing. I'll try to do it for tomorrow! Have a nice day!
hi, rachel i really visited your blog very first time.I think it is the best blog i ever visited. I ALSO is one of the men seeking for a good knowledge of english. a very very impressive of teaching english. ihave a problem if iwant to clear up some of my misconception indivisually ,how can i.
Hello Rachel! It's interesting to make an excursion through Sydney's beaches. They look wonderful! Especially Bondi! Rachel, one of the things I love to do at the beach is to enjoy grilled fresh seafood (Usually I try to have as much as I can ;-) when I'm there). In fact, I haven't tried fish and chips either Aussie or Pom's way but if you ask me, I decide to vote for the sort with VINEGAR. It's not because I want to ingratiate myself with you but it reminds me of one of my favourite dishes with vinegar (slices of beef are dipped in VINEGAR in a hot pot, rolled in rice paper with differnt kinds vegetables, and served with a special kind of sauce). Rachel, please don't tell Chris that I'm for Pom's taste ;-). Now time for work! First, correction of Satya's small erros: 1/ I asked them whether they had placed it safely or not. 2/ And do you know what would do the next day? Next, I think 'had scolded' should go before 4 (my friend came and told me) on the timeline. Finally, I haven't had a beach walk but I usually take a walk about the park as physical exercise early in the morning (elderly people begin from 4:00am, I from 5:00) It's enjoyable with gentle breeze, fresh air and away from noise and heavy traffic. Space is my own! Bye, Best regards, Myen.
Chao co Rachel / Hai Rachel/ 2 Rachel... There're three ways of saying "hi Rachel". The first is Vietnamese and the two last is slang - 'hi' is pronounced 'hai' and it also is number 2 in Vietnamese, so we usually use hi, hai, 2 - the same to say hello with friends. To know more ways of saying 'hello' from all over the world is very interesting, isn't it? About your photos, very fantastic .I like both the greeny-blue water and sky, sky & sea seem merging on the horizon. Your excursion through Sydney’s beaches was very interesting. I've never go for a walk through beaches. Whenever I go to the sea, I usually get up early and go to the coast to see the rising sun. That's wonderful to see the first morning sunlight display on the horizon and the sun emerges slowly. I think you should try to see the sunrise when you stand on mountains or hills, you'll discover more differences that very interesting. When I was the 1st year student, my class went camping in a hill. In the morning, we managed to get up early and go for a walk around the hill. Trees and plants wet in dew. There're only the twitter of birds and the murmur of brooks. That's peaceful and tranquil. And the most beautiful was to see that the sun was rising slowly after a far range of mountains. Wow, that's great memory. See U soon with your vocab definitions and also Aussie sport (^_^)
Hello Rachel :-) I'd like to begin with your poll: I'm definitely for tartare sauce. Strange though it may seem but my favourite fish'n'chips is without any sauce; only a little bit of salt, provided that the fish is fresh and the chips are made from tasty potatoes. You have got lots of wonderful beaches in your neighbourhood. I don't live on the sea, but I love the sea. I try to go to the sea as often as possible. The sea is much more than only views: it's the smell, it's the air you can feell on your face, the sand you can feel under your feet and the sound of waves and birds you can enjoy. Until next time.
Hi.. It's the first time for me to read your blog. I like it. It's good for improve my English skill. (^________^)v
Dear Rachel Hunt! Have you been to my country? That was what entered into my wildly working imagination instantly seeing the greeting in my own language! From Sydney, Australia! I felt overwhelmed. You may believe I´ve never spoke a word with any Pom. Even, I don´t practice any speaking - there is no one in my age interested in learning and young relatives are bored at asking them for conversation. At 4 p.m. yesterday your Bondi blog appeared on my screen as I was leaving my office. I only took a copy mit and went - with a short pause for my espresso coffe - on a stroll to catch last colourful beams of the sun. Our small town is always crowded with turists in Summer. Now, there are less visitors, mostly older people from Austria and Germany staying in our spa, the other place for walks to enjoy calmness and silence. Hot sprins heal bones well! So, I take the route in the centre of this tiny town with its castle and park (hils are everywhere here) rather in working days. On weekends I take the walk in forests higher above the town. In my very relaxed tempo I listen to the English tapes. I discovered that by moving on a walk I manage better to concentrate on listenig than by sitting in a room. And now, for the taste decision. I have the same as Adek described, anyway my land doesn´t have the sea only my lake as big as one tear.
Hi Rachel, I had tasted the fish neither with tartare sauce nor vinegar. So I have no idea about that. I like fried fish. We are near coastal area. So we can get variety of fresh fish. After finishing walk along the different beaches you had a nice food. It’s good. Amy described Goan beaches last month. It is your turn to explain Australian beaches. Any how it’s wonderful. Usually I go to the beaches for relax and play with children. Sometimes have a bath in a sea. It is really a fun. But I never had such an experience walking along the beaches more than two hours. This is for Chris. I hope he is OK now. Have you watched Sunday ODI. Australians clinched the series. Indians played well particularly on that day. Tendulkar and Ganguly gave a fantastic start. At one stage we were very comfortable. Because of the middle order collapse the match turned the other way. It will be always difficult to chase above 300.
Dear Rachel, As you mentioned in your post, I used to get same type of problem saluting colleague at 4 o’clock in morning. I start my work from 8:00 pm and when new batch come in morning shift, they start to say good morning and when I leave premises after few minutes I have to say good night. They I used to call them whether it is early morning or late night. Picture you put up in blog are very interesting and your description of visit created a virtual tour for me. I expect such a virtual tour of other sites of Australia. Meaning of words: clamber (vb) - to climb up, across or into somewhere with difficulty, using the hands and the feet catch your breath (expr) - to stop breathing for a moment way out of my league (expr) - to be too good or too expensive for you to be perched (vb) - to sit on or near the edge of something poll (n/vb) -ballot stroll (n/vb) -to walk in a slow relaxed manner, especially for pleasure hideous-extre
