Noodles!

Hi Satya and everyone,

First, let me try and give you the websites I mentioned on Wednesday, as for some reason they didn’t work when I tried to link them! I’ll just type in the addresses rather than trying to set up a link, then you can copy them if you’re interested.
The Sydney Morning Herald’s website is: www.smh.com.au
And the Cambridge exam practice site is: www.flo-joe.co.uk (Ana Paula, I’m glad you already know of it – everyone else, I’d encourage you to have a look, especially if you’re considering taking a Cambridge exam like FCE or CPE).

Let’s talk about food! Yay! As you know, last night I went to the Night Noodle Markets, which are held every year in Hyde Park, in the city centre, as part of Good Food Month. I’d never been before, so I was really excited and also quite curious to see what there was and how it was organised. There was one major downside – Chris had to take a day off yesterday as he really wasn’t well, so he couldn’t come with us :-( It’s not the end of the world, though, as the markets are on again next week, so we’re going to go again next Thursday! Here's a picture for you - it's not great, but you'll get the general idea.

Owen was all excited because we went in on the train, and he loves train trips! Every time the train stopped he said,” Doors closing. Please stand clear.” which I thought was hilarious!! Anyway, we arrived at the markets and met our friends (they have a little boy too, called Harry, who is 3 days older than Owen) and went for a look round. It was packed with people – there were tables and chairs set up but they were all taken, so we ended up having a picnic on the grass, which was really nice. The stalls were arranged in a square round the outside of the seating area, and we did a complete circuit before deciding what to have. It was great – there were lots of different Thai places, plus Chinese, Japanese, Singaporean and others, as well as a bar and some stalls selling various desserts (more on those later!). I got Owen some chicken satay sticks (the chicken is marinated on skewers, and served with peanut sauce), and I had two of my very favourite things – salt-and-pepper squid, and a Japanese dish called okonomiyaki (apologies to anyone from Japan who might be reading this – I have no idea how to spell Japanese words in English!). Okonomiyaki is like a savoury pancake, made with a light batter, then a layer of cabbage, and then a topping. They had my favourite topping, bacon and potato, so I was really pleased. On the top of that they put mayonnaise, seaweed and (I think) barbecue sauce – delicious! Owen helped himself to the squid and the pancake, and seemed to enjoy both, which was great.

By the time we’d had a look round, got our food and eaten it, the boys were getting a bit crazy; it was getting dark, and there were lanterns and fairy lights everywhere – lovely, but they also attracted a lot of moths, which I wasn’t so crazy about! Owen and Harry were running about like mad things whilst we were trying to eat, so one of us had to keep getting up and bringing them back, especially when they saw the fountain and decided it would be a really good idea to try and climb in!! In the end, we ended up bolting our food down and then bribing them with dessert! There were a couple of dessert stalls, one selling ice-cream (there’s a factory close to where we live where they make it, and I have to say it’s fantastic!), and one selling little Dutch pancakes called (I think) poffertjes. We went for the pancakes, which came with slices of fruit and chocolate sauce and were absolutely delicious! So, all in all, it was a great night (although I was absolutely knackered by the time we got home, and so was Owen!), but I think it’ll be better next week because we know what to expect, and also because Chris will be able to come; he was pretty gutted that he’d missed out! I’ll also try and get a better photo (maybe even one with us in it!), as I was so busy trying to eat and keep an eye on Owen that photo opportunities were quite limited! Phew!

OK, I’ll take my food-lover hat off now and turn myself back into a teacher …Let’s have a look at Satya’s questions from his last posts.

People say that the IITians had* showed some partiality towards the students from IIT.

This is correct, because you’re using reported speech (you’re telling us what someone else said). I would, however, change say to said, as you’re talking about the past:

People said that the IITians had showed some partiality towards the students from IIT.

Think about what the people actually said at the time (direct speech):

“The IITians have showed some partiality …”

This is in the present perfect, so in reported speech we need to use the past perfect.
If you look at Amy’s post from the 27th September, you can see more examples (and homework!) of this.

Some of the readers have asked a question: If I wished to be a writer (Rachel... is it correct to use 'wish' like this?), why did I choose engineering??

Again, this is correct! Your use of ‘wish’ is OK; you are using it in the past simple (= wanted) because, again, you’re reporting what someone said.
It might be interesting (well, I’m interested, even if you guys aren’t!) to have a look at the meaning of if in your sentence. In this case, if = if it is true that … or if it is the case that …

Here are some more examples:
If you wanted okonomiyaki, why did you buy chicken satay?
If Chris was sick, why didn’t you stay at home and look after him?
If you want to try some salt-and-pepper squid, you only have to ask.
If you’d like some more practice, why don’t you write some sentences for homework? ;-))

And finally, Satya asked me a really horrible question (only joking, Satya, all questions are good!)

Rachel...I still find problems using the tenses... could you teach me about the tenses...and how to use them...

Firstly, I think you can use tenses much better than you think! Here’s an example of your writing from one of your posts:

After I had written my last post, I went back to the campus to watch some other events. I was watching curiously when one of my friends came and told me that one of the co-ordinators had scolded our friend. We immediately rushed to the spot to check it out.

I’ve changed it slightly to get an example of all the past tenses (what you originally had was fine!) …

We’ll discuss this more in the next post, so have a think about the following things:
• In the extract, can you find the past simple, past continuous, and past perfect simple tenses?
• Can you find an example of reported speech?
• Can you draw a timeline of the events that Satya describes?

And a special task for Satya:
• When you write about how you stole the exam papers (we’re all nagging you about this, aren’t we?!), I’d like you to try doing it this way (if you have time):
• Firstly, write your post without thinking too much about grammar – just write as naturally as you can.
• Then, look at what you’ve written and see if you want to correct anything.
• Next, compare the two versions and let me know if you have any questions.
• (You don’t have to post both versions unless you want to)
• If anyone else wants to try this, feel free! You don’t even need to post it as a comment – the idea is for you to get used to looking at your work and trying to correct it yourself.

Satya, I’m assuming that you mean mainly past tenses, as you seem to use these the most, but let me know if you want to work on anything else and I’ll see what I can do :-)

Well, once again I’m working tomorrow, so I’ll be back on Sunday to tell you all about my walk from Coogee to Bondi (if it happens – the weather has been very dodgy over the last couple of days!)

Enjoy your weekend!

Rachel

Hi Rachel, You and Owen seem to be enjoyed at Food Carnival. It’ll be more fun with Chris next week. Wasn’t any Indian food in the exhibition? Haven’t you tried Indian food yet? You had tasted it would you explain your experience. I was studying 6th standard in the high school. I found it difficult to memorize English poem, not only poem but English lessons and grammar also. I was preparing half yearly exam. Instead of memorizing the poem do you imagine what I did? I had just written down in the small piece of paper and put it into the pencil box. I was happy to see in the question paper that we were asked to write the poem which I had hidden in the box. I never had any guilty feeling before copying it to the answer sheet. I thought the invigilator was busy with reading some books while supervised the exam. But he watched me copying something. He asked me directly. I didn’t want to reveal the truth. I was caught with enough proof. He sent me to the headmaster for further action. My mom was teacher in the same school in the elementary section. She thrashed me right and left. I felt shame that I should not have done like that. I didn’t want to go home with all fear to see my mom. I went out of school campus without knowing where I go. One of my relative who was working in the school office came to know about this incident. He went to search me outside campus with the words from my mom. Finally I was taken to the home. Till that very moment I had taken resolution not copying in the exam what ever the consequences of the results. I stick on that till now. Rachel, this is my story of copying in the exam. I have just written. Tell me how I follow the tenses. I will read again with more concentration.

G'Day Rachel! Yummy! You had a sweet and savoury time at the Night Noodle Markets. I can make out from the picture that there seems to be so many shops lined with food items. Thank you Rachel! I visited the Flo-Joe and also tried some online tests, it's great. My homework for today's question. In answering to your first question, the sequence of the tenses in the extract is; in 1st sentence, past perfect simple and past simple tenses,in 2nd sentence, past continuous, past simple and past perfect simple tenses and in 3rd sentence past simple tense. The example of reported speech is in the 2nd sentence. As for the timeline of events, the first event occured earlier that he completed the blog entry. The rest of the events occured after he went back to the campus and they were in a continuous manner. Naheed

Hey up Rachel! It seems you and Owen had a riot of time last night! Oh, I just feel sorry for Chris couldn´t come with you two. Ah! By the way, is he better now? Well I hope so. Rachel today is holiday here in Brazil. Yippie!!! A dazzling sun is shining outside, the sky is blue and the clouds are so white that they look like fairy floss :-). Today we celebrated the patron saint of Brazil, 'Nossa Senhora Aparecida', the virgin Mary, mother of Jesus, who appeared in the Paraíba river shore around 18th century(if I´m not wrong), in the Aparecida city(a city located in the countryside of Sao Paulo state) in a form of a black Madonna image. Many pilgrins come every year to the shrine built in Aparecida to honour the Virgin Mary, patron of our country. Oh moreover, today we also celebrate Children´s Day, so I´d like to wish Owen a 'Happy Brazilian Children´s Day :-)!!!' Well let me have a go at the homework: *If you wanted to go to the beach, why didn´t you call up your cousins? *If you want to take this train, you need to hurry up. In the extract, can you find the past simple, past continuous, and past perfect simple tenses? past simple: 'I went back to the campus to watch some other events.' 'We immediately rushed to the spot to check it out.' past continuous: 'I was watching curiously when one of my friends came...' past perfect simple: 'After I had written my last post...' '... one of the co-ordinators had scolded our friend.' Can you find an example of reported speech? '... when one of my friends came and told me that one of the co-ordinators...' Can you draw a timeline of the events that Satya describes? Oh Rachel, this one is really hard, I´ve drawn a timeline in my notebook, however, here I think I have to number the events sequence which Satya has described. I hope it´s right, and I also looking forward to seeing the answers. After I had written my last post(1), I went back to the campus to watch some other events(2). I was watching curiously(3) when one of my friends came and told me(4) that one of the co-ordinators had scolded our friend(5). We immediately rushed to the spot to check it out(6). (1)/(5) past perfect simple: describes an action which happened before a point in the past; (2)/(6) simple past: describes an action or event at a point in the past; (3) past continuous: describes an activity in progress in the past; (4) reported speech: reporting sth was said in the past. And now the vocab: packed (adj): full; to end up (phr vb): to finally be in a particular place or situation; downside (n): disadvantage; to bolt (food) down (phr vb): to eat your food very quickly; to go for (phr vb): to choose sth; knackered (adj – informal): extremely tired; gutted (adj – informal):very disappointed and upset; dodgy (adj – informal): bad, or not able to be trusted. Enjoy your weekend Rachel, Ana Paula. PS- Thanks for posting the site of The Sidney Morning Herald. I had a look there and I found very interesting. :-)

Hi again Rachel :-)! Could I say one thing for Leila from Finland, please? Leila, I´m very happy to see your comments again on these blogs, all the best for you :-). Thanks Rachel, see ya, Ana Paula.

Hi Rachel, it's so great to be here. It's the first time i have been in a place such here. It's so hilarious. There are so much informative writings that i can find to improve my English. I'm, actually, so bad, though, i have had twelve yeas in learning English but still bad(especially listening). Will you give me some useful advice? Hope so. And now, i have read your "adventure", i like to call it like that. I have never been to Thailand. However, i tasted some food. Some is so strange, and i think, i will not try it twice. :)). Once is enough. Thanks for reading. I'm so happy to be here. Good luck to all you.

Hey Rachel,it should be a wonderful party i guess.but due to some different cultures or something else, there's seldom this kind of party in my community. I am watching the "Desperate Housewives" with my girlfirend, she likes so I stay with her :-),and you may also see many differnt kind of community partys there, they invite neighbors, friends and enjoy the desserts, pancakes, bacons and potatoes ... But you may still meet the alike activity during the holiday and festival, which organised by the government or the merchants, but it's not hold in park but normally in a long street, you can eat a lot troditional food since you enter into the street, and you walk, you eat until to get to the end of the street. Most of time, there's a lot of troditional foods which have a long history already and you may not easy to find in the normal day, because only the old people know how to cook them,I think that is why some dilicous and troditional foods are on the edge of disappear which we may can not taste them maybe a couple of years later :-( The government is trying to protect our culture or some troditional foods and things which already the symbolize of a country's cultrue, but most of youny people are don't like to learn it,they prefer the moden socks most. Actually, the tenses is also problem for me to learn English,it always takes me many times to analyse and remember, now I agree with you,to do more exercises, write down the sentences maybe helps. I will go to the "Cambridge exam practice site"to do some test and let you know my questions. Thank you, Hoo

Hello Rachel! Sorry to know about Chris's health, hope he's doing fine now. Here's today's homework: Example of past from Satya's post: My friend came and told me that one of the co-ordinators had scolded our friend. 2) I'm not really sure about how to write a timeline but I'm giving it a try: After Satya has written his last post, he went back to campus to watch some other events. He was watching curiously when one of his friends came and told him that one of the co-ordinators had scolded their friend. They immediately rushed to the spot to check that out. Vocabulary: End up: to reach a certain place/situation after long routine/process. If you keep one-wheeling(on a bike) like this, you'll end up lying on a bed in some hospital with broken legs or who knows even worse. Packed (here) full: The parking (area) of the wedding hall was packed with cars. Downside: the negative side, a disadvantage: Living in a small town is rather peaceful but the downside is that you end up having to live without a lot of facilities you can have in a city. To bold down: to swallow food quickly: Yesterday I woke up late so I had to bolt my breakfast down in order to make it to work in time. To go for: To choose something - It's raining outside and I'd rather go for a long drive in rain than lying in bed all day long. Knackered: completely tired - Rachel was absolutely knackered by the time she got home and so was Owen. Gutted: very sad/disappointed - He was extremely gutted when he was told he was not playing in the final. Dodgy: (here) not good or reliable - I'll try my best to be at the party by 9'O clock but no promises since the weather is really dodgy these days. Bye for now! Rafique

Hello Rachel! The night noodle markets are great! Owen must have been over the moon! Your description of food makes me hungry. Chicken satay sticks, salt-and-pepper squid and especially okonomiyaki sound yummy! But I'm sorry to hear Chris wasn't well. I hope he is fine now. And here is my answer to your questions: 1/ The past simple tense includes 'went back to', 'came and told me' and 'rushed to'; the past continous is 'was watching'; the past perfect are 'had weitten' and''had scolded'. 2/ The reported speech is 'One of my friends told me that one of the co-ordinators had scolded our frien'. 3/ Rachel, I find it a bit hard to put up the timeline drawing that describes Satya's actions here so maybe I'll give this question a miss. I wish you a nice weekend. Myen.

Hey up, Rachel! Thank you for your descriptive written posting dealing with the nicest evening you could have had (except missing Chris, naturally). I´d have liked to be with you and it seems to be an exiting event. Thank you very much for your links, but I also had known them already. They are pretty good tipps and I am depressed that i could not spend the money on flo-joe... . I had better have more money, but this way I have to work with what I can get. I have found some persons to write snailmail to in English language, that´s real good training! And I am working up here on the BBC LE. Sorry for missing out the homework this time, Rachel. I am running short by time. Looking forward to reading and working along with you! Send my best wishes to the train-lover Owen! he´s too cute! And I hope Chris is not feeling under the weather any more. Yvonne

Hi Rachel! Thanks for two webs U gave us, especial flo-joe.co.uk, I'm reading this web now. About your Night Noodle Markets, so wonderful. If only I would attend it. I'm not only a crazy fan of the eating and drinking, but also cook quite well (only I think ^_^). Oh,I feel hungry, I'd better not think about delicious dishes U mentioned above. In my country, people sometimes organize culinary fair, especial at the approach of Lunar New Year's Day or middle-autumn festival (we use both lunar and solar calender). There're hundreds of Vietnamese traditional dishes in these fairs, each with its own delicate taste specific to a certain region of Vietnam, of course very delicious. Hic, I feel hungry again. It's high time for me to try to explain your vocabs, sorry if I have mistakes.1.packed: extremely full of people; 2.to end up: do sth which not intend or expect; 3. downside: disadvantage; 4. to bold (food) down: to eat sth(food)very quickly; 5.to go for: to choose; 6.knackered: extremely tired; 7.gutted: extremely sad; 8.dodgy: not in good condition. Oh,i've just finished. Good night (12Pm at Vietnam). For me to give Owen some kisses, he's very lovable with his word & act. P/s: can U look for a word that describes a person likes eating and drinking? I can write "I have ingestive soul"? Thanks & see U soon (^_^)

Hello Rachel, thanks for your answer. I'm writing this on saturday night. Actually, I read your post yesterday but I had watched a film before, extremely violent, "Elite Squad", which has been strongly polemical here. Everybody has been watching/talking about and I was also intrigued about it so that I ended up watching it even though I knew it could cause me nausea. The film has a different point of view unknown by most of us and I particularly was really shocked to know what happens beyond what is released by the press. It's a good film indeed but the downside is that while I was reading your post talking about food, my face turned green, blue or purple and I felt really sick. I'm still not feeling well...but it had nothing to do with your lovely post, Rachel, this kind of film has this (not immediate)effect on me. If I know violent films make me feel sick, why I insist in watching films like that? Before getting down to the homework, I'd like to say something about your last post. Owen seems to be intrigued about the dynamics of gates and doors closing. Who knows we are going to have a famous physicist in the future? Perhaps he is already making a study putting his toys in the fridge. :-) Is he still doing that? My son used to put his "Hot Wheels" little cars in the DVD-rom driver and stare in front of the screen. After some time I've discovered he wanted to see his little cars in a racing on the screen.____________________ Homework:_________________________ 1- Past simple(ps), past continuous(pc), and past perfect simple(pps) tenses:______________ After I had written my last post (pps)/ I went back to the compus to watch some other events (ps)./I was watching curiously (pc)/ when one of my friends came and told me (ps)/ that one of the co-ordinators had scolded our friend (pps)./ We immediately rushed to the spot to check it out (ps)._________________________ 2- Reported speech:_______________ One of my friends told that one of the co-ordinators had scolded our friend._______________________ 3- I don't know what do you mean with "can you draw a timeline of the events...?" Hello Rachel. I've joined this blog just now and skimmed through your posts. They are really very interesting. I wonder, however, where are the explanations for the vocabulary you point out by writing it in bold? I personally don't understand some of the words and expressions and don't even find them in my dictionary.I'd also like to ask you about the sentence you wrote in the second paragraph:" I'd never been before...".I feel there's something missing in this sentence. I'd rather add "there" and put it like this: "I'd never been there before...". I'm sorry, I could have made a mistake by asking such a stupid question, but I'm a student who wants to improve his English even by making mistakes. You'll excuse me, won't you? Thanks in advance for your reply. Timejt from Morocco

Hey up,Rachel How are you and your little cheeky monkey,Owen? Is your husband getting any better yet? You were very cruel to him as you left your sick Chris alone and you went off to the Night Noodle Market. If Chris was my husband I would get a divorce at once.(ha ha ha..)Never mind!Chris, life is always unfair.Yes,I had a whale of a time in Oz.Even though I stayed less than a week I managed to visit some places like Taronga Zoo, The Opera House and Bondi beach.I've got some pictures of koalas which I paid one Ossie's dollar to be taken pictures with them.I also have an unforgetable memory which starts like this.... Despite I went to Oz on a business trip I didn't need to speak English a lot and my English was really poor. I had someone to help me if I needed to speak.Anyway,I wanted to spend some time by myself so I went to the Opera House alone. Some time later I felt thirsty and I went into a cafe. But I didn't know what to order so I looked aroud and saw some people sipping Coca-Cola.I confidently ordered same drink. As soon as it was brought I gulped down and spat it out all over the table. It was NOT only Coca-Cola but also guinness which I had never tasted in my life. I could have nearly died from the embarrassment.I love living in Lincoln.people are fantastic and extremely friendly.Sometimes I miss the hustle and bustle of big cities as I used to be a big city girl.My son loves his shool and it's a wonderful place to bring up children.Rachel,I just wonder whether I've got a chance to be taught Connectives like therefore, however and so on by you.Thank you so much for sharing a slice of you exciting life with us! Have a good day! ps: Which team did you support when England ruby team and Australia's had a match the other day?

Hi every body, this is my first entree to the BBC english learning blog. Before giving any comments I wants to introduce myself to all of u.My name is Hameed wali.I belongs to a village of the north west frontier province of Pakistan. Now I am here in Iraq working in acompany so here i have to work with the people from different countries. This is my 4th month in Iraq during this period I feel severely that I should improve my english. Thanks God that I find the bbc english blog service.Although that I don't know much about the use of this site but I hope that being a part of you and with your support and encouragment I shall be able to speak ferequently with others. To day I read the quotation from Ms.Rachel "Noodles".She expressed her openions about the noodles in a very interesting way.During readind this article my friend who was seated in front of me asked that why I am smiling and at the same time he asked again why my mouth is watering.I replied with out hesitation that replex action because I was not ready for this unexpected question.I read the word replex action when I was in class 9th.In this way by using the scientific word I quited my friend although he disturbed badly the taste which I was enjoying from the noodles. I know that there is nothing in my comments but all that i wrote is just to partisipate. Thanks Hameed Wali.

I found this Blog today.I love it!!The websites which were mentioned in the first paragraph are usefull!!Many thanks!I enjoyed the descriptions about those yammy dishes. As I am a Chinese,I am proud to say,Chinese food are amazing! My teacher who has two-year experience in England told us,the Chinese restaurants in England don't provide real Chinese food, even Chinese style. The menus show something like,"dumpling A,dumpling B,dumpling C~~"each of those is matched with a picture~~.Are those true?As a matter of fact,we have different names for those food,"Bao Zi" "Hun Dun" 'Shao Mai"~~those are Chinese prounciation. It's a pity those delicious food don't have exact English matching names yet.If only I could do something on it.Of course not only food, but also the abundant Chinese culture.Thank you for sharing your life with us.Have a good day!!I will come back soon.

Good to read and learn.
