Hello Everybody!

Hello everybody! My name's Catherine Chapman, I'm one of the English Language Teachers here at BBC Learning English and I'll be the teacher blogger for just a few days until Amy starts blogging on 6 August. Here's my picture: My mum took this photo of me at Berwick train station

You can find out more about me by looking at my 'Meet the Team' page.

I'd like to start off by saying a BIG thank you to Jo and Ha, the outgoing bloggers, for their most interesting and entertaining blogs. And thank you to everybody who has been reading and commenting on the student and teacher blogs - it's always great to read your comments.

And now I'd like to extend a very warm BBC Learning English welcome to Yumiko - it's great to have you on board! I have to say, Yumi, that I am particularly pleased to hear you are a 'shopping queen' (what a nice expression!) - you are a woman after my own heart! The summer sales are in full swing here in London and I can't wait to get over to Oxford street to snap up some bargains. I was wondering, Yumi - do you go for smart clothes? designer? casual? Or maybe you have your own eclectic style. Please tell us a bit more about the type of clothes you like :-)

You have used some very nice words, phrases and sentences in your first blog, Yumi, and you write very coherently. I especially like the adverbial clause you use to organise your writing when you say 'before talking about myself more, I would like to talk about what I did today...' I also like your use of English when you say '...I ended up not buying anything...' You clearly understand that when a verb follows a preposition (like 'before' or 'up'), it must take the '-ing' form.

But do you know what preposition normally follows 'impressed'? You have written 'I was really impressed to this word.' - can you suggest a more suitable preposition?

I'd like to look at the '-ing' forms in another of your sentences, Yumi. You write: 'I am 25 years old, working for Japanese company, doing accounting, having 2 younger sisters and living with my parents and sisters.' In this sentence, at least one of the -ing verbs (working, doing, having, living) would probably be better in a simple form (without '-ing'). Can you tell me which one? I'm sure some of our readers will give you some advice... ;-)

Well that's all from me for today Yumi - I'm looking forward to hearing more about you and checking your answers to my language questions.

Bye for now, Catherine x

Wow, I am so impressed by the use of phrases. I am an English teacher of Grade 3 and I too have the topic of Preposition. I am going to use your paragraph for my class.

Hello Catherine. :) Nice to meet you. I like the way you explain the words and expressions. Here is my answer: (1)-(F), (2)-(E), (3)-(A), (4)-(D), (5)-(B), (6)-(G), (7)-(C) You're used "the outgoing bloggers", can we use "the ingoing bloggers", for example, "welcome to Catherine and Yumi, our ingoing bloggers of the month."? About the preposition follows 'impressed', I think it maybe by/with: "I was really impressed by/with this word". And the last one, the bare form, I rewrite it like this (but I'm not sure): "I am 25 years old, working for Japanese company, doing accounting, HAVE 2 younger sisters and living with my parents and sisters" I'm looking forward to your next entry and answers for the language questions.

Hello Catherine. I know you from the "Meet the Team". Sometime ago, I had read your profile and had found interesting the voluntary project. Well, I would suggest two answers to Yumi: the preposition about(?) and the ing-verb having(?). I am finishing with a bye and the 7 meanings: 1(F),2(E),3(A),4(D),5(B),6(G),7(C)??????? :-)

Welcome Catherine! It´s really nice to meet you :-)! I know we´re going to learn a lot from you, even though you´re going to spend only few days with us. Hmm... I will try to match the words/phrases with their definitions: 1-F; 2-E; 3-A; 4-D; 5-B; 6-G; 7-C. I´m looking foward to your next entry. Best wishes, Ana Paula.

Hello Catherine, I'm sorry that my entry will be short, but I have lack of time, and moreover I really do many mistakes in speling - so many that I'm ashamed of myself. If I didn't write I wouldn't remember my solution of your vacabulary task, and I wouldn't check it later, then I must... Then, in my opinion proper descriptions are: 1-F, 2-E, 3-A, 4-D, 5-B, 6-G, 7-C; it would be better if Yumi used the wors "have" then "having". Best wishes for everyone!

Hello, Catherine Those will be few days with you, but I'm sure they will be very instructives. If Yumi ask me, I'd tell her sho sould change working for work. About your vocabulary asigment: Outgoing means leaving or retiring from a job position. It's great to have you on board means it's good that you are part of our team. A woman after your own heart is a person you admire because she does or believes the same things as you. In full swing means operating at the highest speed. To snape up some bargains is to quickly buy some things, before they are all gone, as usually women do on sales. Eclectic means made up of several different elements from a variety of sources. Coherently is something joined together in a smooth and logical way. I hope don't fail to much. Good bye...

Hi Catherine,How are you? I have 2 questions: How can I make my writing coheret? How can I increase my vocabulary and phrases? thank you so much and here are the answers: (1_F)(2_E)(3_A)(4_D)(5_B)(6_G)(7_C)

Hello Catherine! Greetings from Australia. I have recently discovered this site and I am so happy about it as I have a small class of ESL students whom I have asked to become bloggers for a while. I hope this will be the beginning of a very exciting learning experience for all of us. Warm regards from the Australian Capital Territory. Christiane

Hello Catherine! It's so nice to e-meet you. I would say searching and snapping up some bargains is also my taste. Here are my answers to your questions: "I was really impressed (with / by) this word"; and the matching definitions could be: 1_G, 2_E, 3_A, 4_D, 5_B, 6_F, 7_C. Best wishes, Myen,

Sorry I forgot anoter item about 'ing' form. I think 'having two sisters' would probably better in the simple form 'I have two sisters' because 'Have' is not an action verb. Is it right?

Hi catherine! you are the teacher at BBC learning english~ Thank you for bringing us such a wonderful and interesting platform to learn english, especially the fancy teacher/student blogs. I think that the answer to your first question should be "impressed with" and that to the second one should be "and live with my parents and sisters". I'm not sure about the second one :) Hi, yumi, come on, I expect your wonderful blogs to know more about Japan!

Hello Catherine, It is a pity you stay only until the 6th. Hope you come back in a near future. You have made change my daily routine in your fist blog. Until now, I picked up the new vocabulary and copied it to my working (or active) wordbook. Today I must first find (or try to find) the meaning. That forces me to pay more attention. The results I found are the following : 1-F; 2-E; 3-A; 4-D; 5-B; 6-G; 7-C Concerning the Yumi’s text exercices, I let her to solve them. Antonio

Hi Catherine! Thanks for giving us those good words and phrases. Here is my answer: (1)---(F) (2)---(E) (3)---(A) (4)---(D) (5)---(B) (6)---(C) (7)---(G)

Nihao,Catherine.I am very glad to have you on board. You are a woman after my own heart---smart, talented, intellectual.Hopely i haven't frightened you by saying so,for those are just simple impression of you through your voice and programs. Here are the answers:1F,2E,3A,4D,5B,6G,7C.

Hi Cathrine, welcome. I have read one article in a news paper that the women in cities are doing shopping more frequently than their counterpart. What more interesting here are some of them not even open the pockets which they bought from the shops before they do it again? With out knowing that the same kind of material they purchased and kept in wardrobe they tend to buy it again. How wonderful women they are Hope you are not that category. Really I am happy that you will be with us for gap days. I checked you column in the “meet the team you suggest that learning five new words every day. It’s good idea. I find it difficult to follow it could you give me some tips.1-f,2-e,3-a,4-d,5-b,6-g,7-c

Hello Catherine! Nice to meet you!I would like to start off my comments by saying thank you to Jo,the out going blogger. She had given us interesting and entertaining blogs.I hope your blobs will be more interesting than hers.I like the way you explain the vocabulary.HW-1-f,2-e,3-a,4-d,5-b,6-g,7-c.Preposition-by and the ing-verb having.I am looking forward to your next blog.Bye.

Hello, Catherine! I wear anything that suits me and that includes a lot of trying out in front of the mirror. I think that the verb 'to have', when it means 'to possess', can't be used in the progressive tenses. Then again, I can say 'I am having a shower' or 'I am having a great time', but I am not sure why this is possible and common to say in English. Do you know why? I also think that Yumi should have used the present simple tense in that sentence because she was talking about the actions that are part of her everyday life and about something she does everyday. One more confusing thought of mine is that I should not switch from one tense to another in a sentence while enumerating actions, but stick to the tense with which I start. Am I right??? I don't know.

Hello, Catherine. It’s great to have you with us. You said you are one of the English Language Teachers at BBC Learning English. I’m wondering whether you have read my previous comments… Talk about the preposition that normally follows ‘impressed’, should it be ‘by’ ? In Yumi’s sentence, I think we should say ‘I am 25 years old, working for Japanese company, doing accounting, have 2 younger sisters and live with my parents and sisters.’ Time to match the words/phrases with their definitions, (1)-(F); (2) - (E); (3) - (A); (4) - (D); (5) - (B); (6) - (G); (7) - (C). Waiting for your answers. Catherine, I have seen your photo. Wow, a beautiful lady! See you tomorrow. Jill.

Hello, Catherine. I think Yumi had to write:'I am 25 years old, working for Japanese company, doing accounting, I have (not I am having) 2 younger sisters and I'm living with my parents and sisters.' I think have is correct form , not having. All the best for you!

Hello Catherine and welcome! It's a great pleasure to have you as teacher blogger, although for a short period of time.I had seen you at 'Meet the team' sometime before. The thing I found very interesting about you was dry stone walling.I'm very impressed with your hobbies :).Here are my answers:1(F),2(E),3(A),4(D),5(B),6(G),7(C).Bye for now,Naheed

Hello, Nice to e-meet you, Catherine. I read in you meaty blog some expressions which have attracted my attention. 1)"The outgoing bloggers": Is there any similar expression such as "the oncoming bloggers" or another term for the new bloggers we are welcoming? 2) " a shopping queen": Can we say "a shopping king" when it's the male who does the shopping. On the other hand, a little bird told me that your favourite place is "Allendale". Would you please tell us what makes this place your preferred attraction? Thank you very much.

This is my first writing for blog. Here is my answeres:1-f,2-e,3-a,4-d,5-b,6-g,7-c. In my opinion she should write: 'I am 25 years old, working for Japanese company, as an accountant.I have 2 younger sisters and am living with my parents and sisters.'
