RE!
Hello to Lidia and all of our World Service readers,
Good evening everyone. Tonight I’m going to start by telling you about a little shop near my house. It’s called “RE”. It’s a funny name for a shop, isn’t it? I heard that the shop owners used to be teachers! They are a husband and wife who stopped teaching and decided to open a furniture shop instead! I love going to their shop, but every time I go, it makes me feel envious of their life. Do you know what they do? They have a huge van, and they drive to Europe and go to France, Spain, Italy, Bulgaria, Croatia, Slovakia, and buy second hand furniture, ornaments, rugs, dishes, glasses, pictures, mirrors, clocks. In fact they buy anything at all that they can sell in their shop! They bring all of these things back to England, then put them into their shop. Their business is doing well, and there are always lots of customers because everything is unusual. What a great way to work and enjoy yourself at the same time!
Why do you think they called their shop “RE”? Perhaps the shop owners were English teachers! “Re” is a prefix that means “again”. Everything in the shop is second-hand, so “RE” could mean “recycle” or “re-use” or “reclaimed” or even “rescued”. It’s a clever name for the shop, isn’t it? Prefixes (start of words) and suffixes (endings) in English usually have Latin or Greek roots. I expect you know many already!
The reason I’m telling you about this shop is to think about the “re” prefix in the word “resurrection”. This word is used soon, in relation to Easter. “Resurrection” means “rebirth” and is used to describe Christ’s ascent to heaven, which is celebrated on Sunday April 8th this year. In this country, children receive chocolate eggs at this time of year. The egg symbolises rebirth, although most children just eat their Easter eggs without thinking about the religious meaning.
There are many words in English which take the “re” prefix, and many have very positive meanings. As this is nearly my last blog to you, I want to concentrate on something positive, and I think “re” brings to mind many positive words. Personally, I like the idea of rebirth and renewal in spring, I think there is an elemental force in nature which allows us to experience renewed hope and life. How is spring celebrated in your own countries? Does it include the idea of rebirth?
Best wishes,
Samantha.

Nice words, Samantha. As my test has been rescheduled to other date, I have to restart my study which has been target at this specific test. For more devastating is our feeling, we must not become complacent. We really must maintain our fullness. I found your advices about grammar study practical and realistic. Thank you for that. I really must follow them. I will make a study plan including a grammar review. I'd like to tell you about the celebrations here but I'm sure Ana Paula, Maurício or Mônica will describe them so well. Good night...nice dreams to you.

Hi Samantha. How are you today? I like the name RE of the furniture shop near your house. It’s really funny. I think maybe the owners want their customers come more than once. And I admire their life. How interesting traveling around the world! I hope one day I can go into their shop and have a look at their amazing goods! Yes, it’s spring now. Although in Beijing these days it’s a little bit overcast and cloudy. I like spring. It’s the beginning of the four seasons as well as a new year. It always gives us hope and expectation. I changed my job in spring and I think it’s a new start for me. It seems that I am reborn. I hope this year I can make my dreams come true. Samantha, the two months with you are unforgettable. Thanks for your kindly blogs. You taught us so many things we all appreciate. I’m sure I will miss you. Take care with my best regards to you and your family! Jill.
The Easter is celebrated much the same in Finland as it is done in U.K. We also have Easter eggs, special food and the color of Easter is yellow. Re is very innovative name for a shop. When I had my own business I also used the same prefix to name my company. My business was called Re + mera (means more), in other words Remera. At the moment I am rearranging my life. Happy Easter time to you all.
Dear Samantha, Thank you for such a great topic to discuss. Yes, here in Russia as in every corner of the world spring definitely means rebirth of nature. Consequently, it means also renewal of people’s feelings. All March I did not work, as I decided to take a rest from work and think of my life, of what I really want to do and achieve in my life. As I started to do it, relaxed and managed to stop being worried of my future, when I got an offer of a new job. So I start next Monday. Best wishes, Luna PS. The name and the idea of the shop “RE” sound great. If I decide to open one here, I would call it so, do you mind?
Hi, Samantha. Thank you for the useful advice about learning grammar. and I'm sorry that you are leaving this blog site soon. in Japan spring is the season that you start something in, or it can be said "restart" as well. most of the public things such as schools and first job for fresh men start in April. and also April 8th is Buddha's birthday, so we celebrate it by pouring AMACHA(sweet tea) over the Buddha's statue in temples. but nowadays it's not so popular especialy among young people in japan because the number of Buddhist is decreasing. anyway, cherry blossoms, the national flower of japan, are in full bloom now, everyone in japan enjoy the cherry blossoms viewing. I wish I could show you all the beauty. Have a nice day or good night.
Hello Samantha Thanks for your great blogs. I think your today's blok is a good example of how to study English efficiently. You took a prefix and played with it through the whole text. Another idea is to get to know an expression or a grammar problem and pay attention to them while reading books (in an abridged version for example) or other texts. You can find loads of them on BBC Learning English. This way you can beat grammar into your head permanently with a little effort.
Dear Samantha! Yesterday, I was thinking of your son Alex as you mentioned he was interested in reading comments at the beginning. I wish each child could read in such vivid book and learn about variety of people and fates, countries and towns, blossoming trees, snowlands and boiling weather at the same time. For this purpous is English language learning the greatest adventure in my life. The place where I go for a walk very often is a Chapel hiden in a forest. I used to pass the place by before but now I stay and contemplate a while about people who I`ve got to know since I started learning on the BBC page. It is a part of chapels hil way of Calvary where people go espacially in Easter.(And I want you know my second atempt to paint geese gaggle was quite succesful.) All the best!
Hi Samantha, I think this is the great name of the shop “RE”. And a good style of business. People enjoy themselves and they are able to watch nice places. It is easy and practicable. Very cool!
Hello Smantha! Good idea for business! These people maybe would not become rich but they enjoy for sure.Do the goods in the shop are appreciated by customers? I have always enjoyed during my regular visits in a China's shop in our capital. Many little(in many cases useless) things attract my attention. And I have never gone out without at least one purchase. I totally agree with that the name's shop 'RE' is clever idea. Diema
hi samantha ,the shop's name was very nice.in iran spring is the begining of new year...and we put seven things which their names begin with s ,of course in persian,on a table .it includes apples , a green piece of lawnand, some eggs ,candles, miror, holy quran and some other things....
Hi Samantha! This is the first time I visit this blog and I find it really interesting. According with your explanation of the prefix Re- I¨ll say that we have the same prefix in Spanish and the meaning of it is also the same, so, why couldn´t the shop owners be spanish? Here in Spain we have a very important Easter celebrations, better known as processions. Hve you ever heard about it? The most famous are in Sevilla, Zamora, Valladolid. If you have some free time you can spen it knowing this typical Spanish way to celebrate Easter. Sorry for the mistakes. Happy Easter!
Hi Samantha It's nice you've mentioned about religious roots of Easter, but when I was working in England I didn't have a chance to notice that for English people Easter as well as Christmas has any religious contects. I was working in restaurant as a waitres and we had to work during Easter, Christmas' Eve and second day of Christmas which is called in England Boxing Day and is the first day of sale time. People go shopping, consuming, spending time in shoping centres and restaurants. It was really difficult for someone from Poland, where religious contects of those days are still crucial. I had a feeling that nobody there remembered why and what do we actually celebrate those days. It was really sad experience. I would like to wish everyone to "REdiscover" the real sense of comming Easter. Best wishes for all bloggers.
Hi Samantha, thank you very much. It is very nice story with useful words to learn.
When I "googled" "weather in Valladolid" (a city in Spain we are about to visit), your blog came up. I so enjoyed reading it... even though I am a native speaker! I saw it as another message to my husband and me, who are 2 teachers struggling with ideas about how to support ourselves if we leave the teaching profession. You just gave us another idea. Thank you. A lovely blog, overall. Glad I happened to see it. I will now go and look for the weather site! All the best.
hello sir,I am impressed by the words which are simple but prowerful you use in the story.Thank you!
Thanks for all your contributions. This blog has now closed and can no longer accept new comments.
