Practice Makes Perfect!
Hello to Lidia and all of our World Service Readers,
I really wish I was in Moscow today, 13°C sounds wonderful! It is still snowing here, and it looks like the cold weather will set in for a couple of days… It would be great if I could visit Moscow just for a day, I don’t think anyone would notice that I was missing!
Tonight I want to look at a technique for improving your speaking skills. One summer I asked my students to keep an audio learning diary. You can think of this as a one-way blog! I asked my students to record themselves on an audio tape once a week. Here is the task:
Imagine that you are speaking to a real person and answer the following questions on tape:
What do you think you have learned this week?
Do you think your English has improved?
Have you learnt anything new about yourself this week?
What would you like to learn next?
As I can’t listen to your tape to give you feedback, I’m going to include an extra learning aim for you:
Include some of the new vocabulary or expressions you have read in this blog, the Learning English site, or in your own studies.
I know that my students really enjoyed this exercise, and I hope you enjoy it, too. Although I can’t listen to your tapes, I will be able to read your comments, so please try this exercise at least once! As you listen to your recording, pay attention to your intonation and word stress. In English, the intonation in our voice rises when we ask a question, express surprise, enthusiasm, approval etc. Does your intonation change at all in the recording? Do you stress key-words by saying them slightly louder, or by leaving a short pause after them? If the answer is no to these questions, make another recording (on the same topic) and compare your intonation and word stress. Is it better the second time? You might be interested to know that a few months ago, I practised a ten minute business presentation four or five times at home before I delivered it to an audience! Remember that practice makes perfect!
That’s all for now,
Good night or good morning!
Samantha.
PS.
Some examples of parallelism in yesterday’s blog:
blue skies, glittering sea and delicious food
(adjective + noun)
drinking coffee, chatting, watching people walk by, and looking at the sea
(ing verb + object)
we are always smiling on the photos, and we always talk fondly about the experience
(subject + adverb/verb + preposition phrase)
USEFUL WORDS AND EXPRESSIONS
it looks like (phrase)
it seems, appears that...
set in (phrasal verb)
(of weather) remain, stay
it would be (great/wonderful/fantastic) if I could … (conditional)
used to describe a hope/dream/wish
audio learning diary (noun)
diary made by regularly recording your thoughts about your language learning
one-way (adjective)
used here to mean that there is no response to the communication
feedback (noun)
suggestions and comments
pay attention to something (verb)
notice, observe
intonation (noun)
the rising and falling pitch in speaking
word stress (noun)
emphasis placed on a particular word
deliver a presentation (phrase)
give a presentation
practice makes perfect (phrase)
this means that the more you practise, the better you will be at something!

Hello Samantha! Thanks for the tips. It´s a little bit hard to me find someone to practice my speaking English around here. I loved it the sugestion, and you can bet I will try the audio learning diary. It looks like really fun! Good night. Ana Paula.
Hi Samantha. I have lots of this records here. It would be wonderful if you could access them and give me a feedback but I understand that it is not possible. One thing I think it is a good idea is to search about something and then talk about that. You discover a lots of things and practice english at the same time. Once I did that with my friends on line. It was about euthanasia, suicide and murder. I prepared previously several questions and cases and they had to give me their opinions and answers in each case.
Hello Samantha. It’s overcast today in Beijing. But your blog makes the sky become bright. I do believe that practice makes perfect! I imagine I am talking to you, so the following are my answers to your task: 1.What do you think you have learned this week? Last week I changed my job. Now I’m working in a web company, doing some editorial jobs and some jobs related to conferences and exhibitions. I have learned some professional words, which are very useful. Besides that, I have learned some new phrases about vocation. 2.Do you think your English has improved? Absolutely yes! I never doubt this. Every time after learning your blog, I feel that I have made some more improvements. I also know that insistence is essential, especially for learning a foreign language. 3.Have you learnt anything new about yourself this week? Let me think… this week I have learnt that I am better than what I think. I can do better than before. I can get a better job with a higher salary. I find some of my abilities, which I never find out. I know I will succeed in my career. 4.What would you like to learn next? Next, I would like to learn oral English and written English. I hope I can write English articles as well as you. I know it’s a hard work and the goal is not easy to achieve. But I’m not afraid. I have confident in myself. Can you give me some strengths and courage? Thanks a lot! Wish you all the best. Jill.
Hello all, it is a foggy morning in Finland, the temperature is zero degrees, compared to Moscow not so nice. Luckily the weather forecast predicts warmer weather being on it´s way, I am certain milder weather will reach British Isles very soon also. You gave us a very useful exercise again, thank you Samantha. Overall I can say from my own personal experience that only way to learn is to practice, practice and practice. I have started to refresh my forgotten Swedish in simultaneously with English studies and it seems to work very well. The language structures are quite similar in English and Swedish, but rather different to Finnish language form. Before saying buy, may I - as the spring is in the air - be folly and quote Shakespeare: “If music be the food of love, play on; give me excess of it.”
At first, sorry to miss yesterday's blog.Secondly,i am fond of this phrase-practice makes perfect. From your blogs,i have learned much such as parallelism, linking techniques.Thank you for all your useful suggestions.By the way, weather here is wonderful. You feel the gentle breeze, warm sunshine, and even kinds of tasty fruits.I love spring.I wish the good weather will set in as long as possible.I am sure you cannot hiking along the beach in such freak weather, anyway, baking at home is really a great fun.Dont let the bad weather destroy your good mood.Bye for now.
Hello Samantha, and all bloggers! Learning speaking language is for me the most difficult think (but I might admit that learning grammar is difficult too). When I have read your advise about voice diray I have just felt ambigous sansation: I have thoght it should be fantastic and efficient way to learn speaking language, it was samething what I needed; and I have just realized that it requiered regularity and sense of duty. And after this my eagerness was fallen... Why why why everything requier regularity? But I have said to myself: I would not do diry everyday, at the begining I woud try it for several times, just for test. And my resolution is to make speaking diry twice, and after this I will decide if I am determined enough to continue my diry from time to time... And now I can be proud of me! (because of the resolution) I will share with all bloggers news about my achivements - I hope they will, of course. Thank you Samantha for your entry, and the learning method. Best wishes for everyone!

Best wishes and i am looking forward to read your next blog.
Hello Samantha , you aren't going to believe it I've already thought of recording my voice , but it seemed like unusual to listen to your own voice and at the same time makes you laugh at yourself because you think that's a voice you recorded sounded different from your voice , actually makes you think that's not me , but I think it's such a real test to know how much you can speak English and it's worth a try . I am looking forward to finding out more about how we can improve our speaking skills . Best wishes ,
Hi everybody. Long time no seeing you!I've missed you a lot during these last two weeks. Like you, speaking is also one of my weakest points so I found Samantha's tips all very interesting. This business oF recording your own voice is great.I remember trying that some time ago and it was really funny to hear my voice in another language, especially because recorded voices sound so awkward!! Recently, I've just bumped into a nice site that helps CAE and CPE learners develop their speaking, all you need is a mic and the skype programme to be connected. As you may be interested here goes the site http://www.splendid-speaking.com/content/. It would be great to be connected to some of you there. Peter is the teacher who runs the site. Another alternative is to connect to BBC webcast every Thursday. They always interview learners, you just need to apply. So I hope you enjoy these two alternatives as well. Best wishes
Hi Samantha! Hi Blog Readers! It would be fantastic if we could speak English fluently and use English words properly one day. I agree with everyone that speaking is far far more difficult than writing. I am one of the constant and longest readers who is here from the beginning of this blog service. Almost every month we have discussed how we can improve our skills. Believe it or not, we always come to the conclusion that practice makes perfect. I will try all Samantha’s advice, of course. Actually, they look absolutely useful. Thanks for them. I think that everybody should find their own way. To help to find the best method I would also like to recommend to all readers, who are new here, my teacher blogger’s advice how we can develop our ears for the language. It can help us with pronunciation and fluency, too. So, if you are interested you can read Lewis Davies’ entry on 29th September. The title of his post is ”Developing an ear for the language”. I hope you will find it as interesting and useful as I have. Best wishes,
