Last Lesson of the Virtual Week!
Hello to Lidia and all of our World Service Readers
We’ve come round to the weekend again. I wonder what your plans are for the next couple of days? I had intended to go to the beach with my family, but I think it is going to be too cold. I didn’t want to go swimming, by the way! I love the sea, and I have a favourite beach that I like to go to. It’s in a little cove that is protected from strong waves, and there is a tiny little white hotel almost built on the sand. If you go in the summer, the beach is full of families swimming, playing ball games, eating picnics, shouting, laughing… It’s wonderful for children, of course… but if you go in the winter, or the early spring, it is deserted and you can almost pretend it is your own private beach! I thought it would be nice to get wrapped up and go for a walk along the beach. It looks like it’s going to rain, though, so I’ll have to think of plan B!
Today is Comic Relief Day in the UK. This is a day when almost everyone gets involved in some kind of charity work to raise money for local and international charities. It’s called “Comic Relief” because it is combined with humorous entertainment on the TV. All of the celebrities who take part presumably do so without being paid, and the idea is that you can make a donation to charity to reward their efforts. It’s a very slick production, that concentrates the marketing power of a group of celebrities and the BBC onto charitable causes for twenty four hours of media exposure. Do you have similar events in your countries?
Thank you to everyone who sent comments this week. I noticed many new names, which is good! I do read all of your comments, and although I can’t reply to every single one, I am always delighted and quite touched to read all of them. Thank you for the comments about my son and his “transformation”! Let’s see how long it lasts! Tonight I would like to answer a language question raised by Aiman, who asks “is it bad to write just English texts without speaking a lot?”. The answer to this is no, of course not! It’s up to you what you use your English for! If you want to become a proficient speaker, however, you will have to practise with someone. The person you speak to doesn’t have to be a native speaker. If you can find someone who is as motivated as you are to speak English, that’s good enough. Any kind of interaction will force you to listen and respond, and develop your fluency. Remember that listening and speaking are closely connected, so try to watch English language films and use the audio downloads on this site. We’ll look at ways of improving your speaking skills next week.
Enjoy the weekend,
Best wishes,
Samantha.

Hi Samantha! This beach seems a dream to me. I can imagine the view that you have. Could you upload a picture in your next entrance? Here in Brazil we have a similar day to rise funds for one institution(AACD), and this event is called "Teleton". So in this day people do work charity to help AACD rise funds to build a newchildren assistance centre in some place in Brazil that it doesn´t have yet a hospital that take care of children who need special assistance. They make a wonderful work, however it´s very hard to reach the amount of money they need to build new centres for helping children. But it´s indeed a nice day and at least we know that we could help someone even though it´s been just a little. Best wishes, Ana Paula.
Hi,what a beautiful journey with all of you.Have a good weekend is a good refresh for another busy week, but usually,i have no plan about my weekend.Suppose i have, the first thing is to blog on BBC site and learn english with some new programmes.Last night,My brother told me not to use computer too long, because i like to pretend myself as a white collar(it is a joke).actually,i find computer is a useful tool in my study, what's more,i can spare some money on buying english-version books that are very expensive nowadays.Dear samantha,it is not a bad idea to learn on internet without books and teachers, right?Have a good weekend!!!
In this weekend, I have learned that decisions we make and especially bad decisions, can affect not only our lives, but also the way we are!It can throw us into depression, or on the contrary, it can make us feel stronger! It's how I felt when I've refused a scholarship for a year in the town of my dreams, Paris!
Hello Samantha , wow I did it , I did just 5 mistakes in the past exercise , actually at the moment I'm not in a hurry to speak English , I have nothing to do with Hollywood :) but I really do like to learn English for my own reasons , who knows what is going to happen around the world , you know , English language is getting more and more popular everyday , mind you , I can just sit at my computer all day playing computer games , or I can open site BBC learning English and do something that matters . By the way I do believe that women may be faster than men to learn any language , because they are friendly and they eagerly want to make friendships with others and here's where my problem is , we men are a little bit excited to speak with others , I have a neighbor who lives next to me and certainly I respect him but when we see each other , I tell him no more than .. hi .. how are you ? … see you. I completely agree with you , without interaction I can't go far in English , so I should find someone who really wants to speak English and get started . Thank you Samantha for paying attention to our comments , Best wishes ,

Hello! Today we started a new weak in Israel. Although it's not going to be an easy one, it is the last one before Pesach vacation!!! I can't wait till it Friday! The Comic relief day sounds very interesting! I think every country should have similar charity events. It's a great way to put an emphasis on the importance of charity work. Moreover, it makes people to volunteer, and many like that so much they keep on volunteering in their free time! In Israel, there are some non-profit associations which organize fundraising day. Yet, more important I believe is the project taking place in schools across the country. In this project, every student in the 10(th) grade has to donate 60 hours in volunteer work in order to receive his matriculation certificate. The students have to spread the charity work over the year- every week 2 hours in the place they choose. I "did my time" in the local hospital as a nurse assistant, and enjoyed every minute! good evening everyone, Yana.
Hi everyone, I hope that we all had a good weekend. Although Samantha you did not make to the seaside, I trust that your weekend was relaxing. You must lead a busy life with teaching, family responsibilities and tutoring us in the evenings. Thank you for your efforts. As you all may recall I wrote here some time ago, that our national elections are being held today. Well, Samantha asked us what kind of charity campaigns we have. At the moment – as a part of the election hullabaloo here in Finland – we collect money for underprivileged families. All best for everyone.
Dear Samantha, How was your weekend. Did you go to the private beach. I had hectic weekend, because I had a lot papers to grade( four classes)and some house hold works to do, but I took good rest. We don't have such a comic relief week in our country. It is a great idea that committing one day to fund raise money for international charity fund. Recently I have seen on TV that American and British cinema stars fund raised money for AIDS relief in Aferica, but Some African journalist said ,because of corruption in side government , the money won't go to right people to do the right thing. I will write moore tomorrow. kind regards
Hallo everybody! Answering Samantha's question I want to wright about a special day in January here in Poland, when a huge event is organised aiming at gathering as much money as possible. The money are supposed to be spend on health equipment to save life's of just born children, for example. Every year we raise money for different purpose. January it's a winter time and sometimes can be very cold. In that day in spide of possible frost, atmosphere is very, very hot. Early in the morning young people start walking with sealed boxes, and giving people a sticker in return for some donation. You may meet them everywhere. Also you may use your internet bank so you don't have to go out. People not olny give money but they sell sometimes even very stange thinks on auctions. You could buy even a old jet, or a tank. Well-know people give objects which are very often sold for a high price. Many artists give their perfomance for many spectators and simply one can feel that Love is in the air. Every year a new record is established. The organizers say that this big orchestra, like they call it, will play to the end of the world and one day longer. I hope they will! Robert
Hello Samantha, and all bloggers! When I am writting my entry it is about Sunday midnight - weekend is just gone... For me it was tireing - I have worked almost all the time; I have read about your weekend plans with real pleasure! Moreover I hope to read more about the rest of bloggers weekend plans when theirs comments will appear. In my country we heve the special day when everyone donate money for charity. It is the second Sundey after the New Year, it is colled The Huge Orchestra of Christmas Help. In this day in almost every town, even in small one, there are organized rock concert which provide donation for sick children; in this day there are many auctions for the same purposes. It is the time of fun and joy, at the evening people make fireworks which is colled "glimmer for heaven". Christmas Orchestra provides people an occasion for amusement in the midle of dark and usualy severe winter. Of course not all prople take part in events - the tradicion of Orchestra is not too long, about fifteen years, some of us are against Orchestra. But amounts of mony that are collected each year are really impressive. I am waiting impatiently your next advice and instructions for our English improvement. Best wishes for you Samantha and everyone,
hello Samantha, i had never write a blog before to you, but i really enjoy it. Because it has a special purpose(improving our English).here in Afghanistan our students don't have a lot of facility to improve there English. first of all here the coast of good universities that teach english is very high, the learners like me who studying english in small courses for one hour it's very difficult to develop there english and as well as 95% of People in Afghanistan don't have access to the internet. After visiting blog page,it seems a good way to learn somethig from you. i hope you advise me somethings about that how i can improve my english. and tell me about some free site that i can learn something from it. i know that my english is very poor, if i have some gramatical mistake, i Apologize for that, i look forward for your advice. Yours truly,

Dear Samantha! We also have a charity event in Slovakia. However, it is not combined with humorous entertainment like Comic Relief Day in the UK. Blooming daffodil is a worldwide symbol of renewal, new life and hope. In Slovakia lots of volunteers will take an active part in the 11th anniversary of Daffodil Day that has been held by the League against Cancer since 1997. On 7th April volunteers are giving passers by yellow daffodils- flowers of spring and symbols of the fight against cancer. By giving a donation for daffodil and daffodil shaped badges you are supporting patients with cancer. This fundraising is aimed at early treatment and at enabling doctors to provide information on prevention of this insidious disease. We can also raise money by sending short messages or buying different presents on this day. Best wishes,
hi Samantha and all bloggers. Talking about weekends, i would like to tell u some about mine and please don't be so surprised. Every weekend i have to work, as a part time job. To me, 'weekends' never exists in my dictionary and i believe , not only me but many of other young people in my country work on weekends. In a developing country like vietnam, everybody needs to work hard and try their best to gain the opportunities in life ,if not, they will be left behind. However, we still spend time for other things besides studying and working. Like, last sunday, a big charity event took place in my city with the participation of many V.I.Ps, including consulate generals, managers of luxurious hotel( Park Hyatt, New World, ...), rich men and women. These people took part in an exciting competition called 'Cyclo championship'in which each of teams would design their own cyclos for the race. This was also a out-door picnics for any families feeling like of doing charity. All money collected would be given to unfortunate children in our city. So, this event was not only meaningful but also a lot of fun. Now, a new week has come and everyone is back to his/her busy life, but i believe good things are all around. regards PS: dear Samantha, may i ask you somthing? I wonder if i could use some strange words which are hardly met in writing at university( I'm a student of english department). Thanks in advance.
Thanks for all your contributions. This blog has now closed and can no longer accept new comments.
