Good Evening or Good Morning!
HELLO FROM SAMANTHA
Dear Lidia
Good evening Lidia, and Good Evening or Good Morning to our World Service friends and virtual students around the globe! It has been another lovely spring day here, the sky has been bright blue all day and it has lightened and brightened my mood. I hope you all enjoyed Tuesday, whatever the weather where you live!
Thanks for part 2 of your blog, Lidia, and thanks for giving us more information about yourself! It sounds really interesting to meet so many different people all of the time. You tell us that your company is one of the biggest in Moscow, is it a trading company? I’m not sure what line of work you are in. One thing is for sure, you must be busy keeping up with contacts all over Europe as well as in Moscow! What kind of exhibition are you organising? I love exhibitions! By the way, I’m looking forward to seeing your pictures! Thank you for all of your efforts. Please continue to tell us about your life and work in Moscow.
Well, I can see a change in your sentence structure already, so, well done! Your sentence structure is more accurate and you have divided your text into paragraphs again. You’ve already made a great start!
Can I look at uncountable nouns for a moment? These are nouns that are impossible for us to count or quantify, like happiness, sadness, pleasure, information, education, people. These nouns often don’t take an article (the/a)*. In these examples (taken from Tuesday’s blog), no article is necessary because the nouns are being used in a general sense:
I missed my blog’s team and with [a] pleasure I opened this site [paragraph 1]
I got [the] answers from different countries [paragraph 1]
It would be a very useful time for getting [a] new experience [paragraph 4]
The other language point I would like to look at is the use of thank and thank you.
i. To thank is a verb, and if we want to pass on our thanks, we say “I would like to thank you for the wonderful dinner”, or “I would like to thank all of you for coming to the exhibition”. Thank does not need a preposition (to), it takes a direct object (you/all of you).
ii.The noun form of this word is thanks. In this case, where we are using the noun, we would say “I would like to pass on my thanks for the wonderful dinner”, or “I would like to express my thanks to all of you for coming to the exhibition”.
iii. Finally, thank you is also a set phrase or interjection. So we can say, “I would like to say thank you for the dinner”, or “I would like to say thank you to all of you for coming to the exhibition”.
I will have to end this here, but before I do, I must let you know that the traffic in Moscow is crazy, not creasy!
I’m looking forward to your next blog,
Best wishes
Samantha
PS. Task
* I wrote that uncountable nouns often don’t take an article. There are exceptions to this rule however. Look at these sentences:
i. Eating chocolates is a pleasure I would find difficult to give up.
ii. He gave me the answers I needed.
iii. I was so lucky to have an experience that would change my life for ever.
Why do these uncountable nouns (all taken from Lidia’s blog) need the article (a/the/an) in these examples?
USEFUL WORDS AND EXPRESSIONS
line of work (phrase)
type / kind of work
keep up with someone (phrase)
to stay in touch with someone
contact (noun)
person you meet through/for business
accurate (adjective)
careful, without errors
uncountable nouns (noun)
nouns that cannot be counted (feelings/general concepts/ideas/theories)

Good night Samantha! The hot is unbearable! I have a terrible headache due this hot weather, plus my stomach is aching as well. Oh... nevermind. Tomorrow I´ll be all right ( I hope so). However the weather forecast says this hot climate will persist for more 15 days. Can you believe that? I think I´ve never would wish some cold days, but now I wish had some cloudy days and a mild wind in my face. Oh... I have to go to bed now, my head is spinning around. It´s time to sleep. Best wishes, Ana Paula.
Hi Samantha, it's nice to know about uncountable nouns. I can't answer today's task. If I were to make a sentence using the uncountable nouns in the task's sentences, I think I would use the articles, but I can't explain the reason. I'll have to wait for the answer. Thanks for the lesson. Bye.
Hi,Samantha.THANK YOU FOR YOUR LESSON.I am happy to see my comment posted.SO i tell myself to keep going on this BBC JOURNEY that full of surprises.T
Hi,Samantha.THANK YOU FOR YOUR LESSON.I am happy to see my comment posted.SO i tell myself to keep going on this BBC JOURNEY that full of surprises. The following is my answers for the task.Although uncountable nouns donot take an article, these examples you mentioned are the exceptions,e.g.'eating chocolates'is a definite concept or idea.It is the same as in sentence3:'an experience'refer to something concrete, and in sentence2'the answers'are known to both of them. That is why these uncountable nouns take an article.
Good morning Samantha From Greece, We have ,too,a great blue sky in the herald of spring. Well for your question about uncountable nouns that takes articles. I think in the above sentences the uncountable nouns takes an article cause they talk us about specific information.
Hello, Samantha. As you, in Beijing today, we have a lovely spring day and the sky is bright blue, but still a little bit cooler. I couldn’t help wondering that how many days we haven’t have a blue sky. Do you believe that maybe every place in the world has a spring sunny day? I would like to say thank you for your particularly explanations about thank and thank you. Until now, I have known that I have made some mistakes concerned thank and thank you but nobody told me before. Please accept my thanks. Get down to your task. The uncountable nouns in the sentences you gave us which need the articles within them, are specific feelings or something. (1.) ‘a pleasure’ is the one you find it difficult to give up. (2.) ‘the answers’ are that you needed. (3.) ‘an experience’ is the one that would change your life. I understand in this way. Please correct me if I’m wrong. Have a good day. Jill.
I think in the sentences you gave us, you use the articles because the uncountable nouns are not used in a general sense.
Hallo Samantha I would like to know if you have a dream in your life you still want to come true
Hello Samantha, yes spring is so close to us too! The sunshine is so strong and remains of snow disappear fust - I am wandering around looking for greenery... Countable and uncontable nouns - even though it looks impossible to remember, it sounds encouraging too! (i) tne noun pleasure is uncountable or countable depends on what it means, you have used it in meaning of activity, and you have put an article "a"; (ii) in spite of plural form of answers you have put an article "the" because it means particular answers, that was expected by someone; (iii) "experience" usually is uncountable, but when it expresses something that happens to someone it is countable, and you hve put an article "an". I wish for all fast arrival of spring!
Hello Samantha ,for me articles are the most diffcult subject to figure out ,the difficulty is to know whether this noun takes an article or not , I know there is a lot of grammers help us to put the suitable artticle in the right place but there is still exceptions as you above mentioned . Actually I don't have an exact answer to say but I think if we have in our phrase (have or has )and these auxiliary verbs are followed by noun so we have to put article before the noun ,mostly (a or an) as in the third example and the same situation with verb (be : am , is , are )like in example number one ,but to my surprise I knew that answers are uncountable noun , because I was thinking answers are countable noun and ansewr is singular , answers are plural , anyway whatever the right answer is , it's my pleasure to be here with you .
Hello you all Am I glad I found this site, my evening programme is now clear. I am going to get acquainted with you all and at the same time I can improve my English. Absolutely great thing, that people around the world can advance their English in this manner. One can but admire how kindly Samantha guides the students. I also thank you Samantha. I live in Oulu, which is situated in Northern Finland. Just a matter of interest, our parliamentary elections opened today. The actual voting day is on Sunday March 18, but the Finnish citizens are able to vote as from today onwards until March 13. As I mentioned previously, the final climax is on the following Sunday. I am going to vote tonight. I have several likeable candidates to choose from in my constituency. I will tell you, that although I am 56, my choice is a young woman. Young people in my mind are so candid. You can image the political debate that is going on here in Finland. All parties have promised so much good for everyone, that one wonders who is going to pay for it all! As everywhere all parties are feathering their own nest. Well, the spin-doctors have a lot of work. Leila – a new reader from Finland
Hi Samantha, Here where I live it's boiling hot. During my brisk walk today, I was dripping with sweat, so intense was the heat and that was only 7:30 am.Can you imagine what it's like by mid-day?Cuiabá is considered to be one of the hottest cities in Brazil together with Manauns and Belem. I remember when I first moved to this city(20 years ago) and wanted to leave home after lunch and was discouraged by the locals. They used to say "At this time of the day in the streets you may only bump into dogs or foreigners" Now,of course the pace of life is different and as the city has thrived a lot everybody leaves home after lunch but then modern technology such air conditioners came to rescue us!Here we, definitely need no sauna, something which is very popular in our new boggler's home,Mrs Leila form Finland.Hi Leila and welcome to our community! As for the task here comes the answer: i) "a pleasure" here refers to an activity that you enjoy very much and not to the general feeling of happiness. So in this case pleasure can be countable. ii) Here you have to say "the answers" cause by the context we assume the reader or listener knows which answers we are refering to. iii)Here it refers to sth you do that has an effect on you, either negative or positive. In the example given the effect was that "it changed your life." I guess that's it! Have a nice Tuesday.
Hi Samantha, how nice for you that you are entering spring. Here we are at the doors of autumn :( About your task: I think you used articles because you referred to particular situations, not general speaking.
