Playing or watching table tennis

Hi there

We were also playing table tennis this weekend in Kuala Lumpur. As our children are starting their long school and university holidays, we’ve been getting out more of the equipment for games. Yesterday we put up a darts board outside the house and in the same small space we now have a full size basketball hoop, a table tennis table and now a darts board. Mustapha is very sporty and competitive so he enjoys getting all this stuff out and playing either with the kids or his friends. I’m a spectator only I’m afraid!

I blame my lack of interest and enjoyment of sports on my experiences at school. I think I was quite a gawky girl and although I could run quite well, I wasn’t blessed with good hand-to-eye coordination. So I didn’t excel in many sports and I didn’t get much encouragement from our PE teacher. She was one of those teachers who was really only interested in the stars in the class and didn’t have the patience to encourage those of us who weren’t very successful. So I started to avoid sports, convinced that I’d never be any good. A sad story! Well as a parent it made me want to encourage my children to try out lots of sports and enjoy them. I get a lot of pleasure watching them now.

Congratulations on your DIY efforts Alex, you are a man of many skills. You refer to making and installing plinths in your flat. Did you mean shelves? A plinth is a stone block on which a statue stands and somehow I can’t imagine that you were making these? Building shelves on the other hand is a common DIY job.
Some suggestions for reformulations from you last blog, Alex;

"Elder people are much sensible with distant relocation due to their organism is more subjected by climate and time variations."

Did you mean?

Older people are much more affected by long distance travel as they are more sensitive to climate and time changes.

I mentioned yesterday that gardening was a national hobby in UK. Another British passion is for DIY. We love our homes and seem to be in a continual process of improving and decorating them. There are endless TV programmes that are devoted to the subject too, not to mention magazines and shops. It's a bit puzzling to me sometimes as I can't imagine wanting to spend so much of my leisure time on such difficult jobs. But then as I've said before, I'm lazy!

Tricia

Lexis and patterns from today:

a spectator (a person who watches sport)

a gawky girl ( tall and awkward)

to excel in something ( to be very good at something)

hand-to eye coordination (the ability to make your hand and eye work together)

PE teacher ( a physical education teacher)

a plinth ( a piece of stone on which you put a statue)

DIY ( Do it yourself)

endless ( never seeming to stop)

Comments

Hello! I would like to say some words about DIY.In my country most people are man of many skills/as You Tricia described Alex's abilities/.But I doubt many of them do the work for fun or just as a hobby. Many electrical's plumber's and builder's sevices have become accessible recently. But in a poor society people prefer to do everything themselves and not to spend money on such type of servises.Of course no one can be an expert in every area but many people don't like masters in their houses due to some reasons. Firstly, the master's qualification is doubtful. In Bulgarian language there is a phrase "The master has left his hands here", which means the work has not be done properly. Secondly, everything costs money and these services are not cheap. Another reason against calling a master is that sometimes houses, which have been recently repaired become target of bulglary.I can't reckon if '+' are more than "-", but if we can do something ourselves we really do it.May be it is not common in developped world.Beleave or not,the action takes place somewhere in Europe(from 01.01.2007 we'll be admitted in EU). Have a nice week! Diema

Hi dear Tricia ! How are you today ? what about your family ? Your last blog topic was my favorite subject , Sport . Recently sport activities have been my new hobby . Last two years , I have made some changes in my life with take up sport . After birth of my son , I had afew backache and also exess weight problem . So at first , with my dear friend 's advice who is a sport expert , I took up some swimming classes . To tell the trust before then , I never have gone swimming . Also I took up Aerobics classes . I continued my efforts so now with my goodness ,I am a 3 degree coach of Aerobics sport . As you know in this sport , athletes , exercise with music . They perform harmonious movements that has special rules . For example there are enormous chaines and they must have 32 tempoes like number of one complete music block tempoes .Our Aerobics class is lots of fun and my classmates are from different ages .Because of being careful for correct doing of movements , we give a rest for our brain from every day activities. It 's a brain sport rather than a physical effort . There is a persian idiom that says : every time , you take a fish from water it is fresh .So It 's time to not be a spectator . You can start sport just now ! specially , I advise you take up yoga and Aerobics . keep it for now . Have funy holidays . bye

Thanks for all your contributions. This blog has now closed and can no longer accept new comments.
