Looking after the pennies

Hi Chittisa

I was feeling a bit fed up yesterday and went on an unplanned shopping spree with Hannah my daughter. We went clothes shopping which I love and my mood lifted. However later I did feel guilty about the money I spent!

So you can see that I'm not very good at managing money and have been all my adult life. Don't know why I became like this but it certainly started from the time I was a student! I have a strong sense of living for today and want instant gratification, I'm certainly an example of someone who as Chittisa puts it, "buys before thinking" I can't plan for the future very well and that includes saving money! If I somehow end up with money left in my account at the end of the month, then I immediately think about spending it rather than saving it! So I'm in as much need of advice as Chittisa. Thankfully my husband is better at managing money than me but as you can imagine the topic of saving money is a sensitive one and it can easily lead to conflict in partnerships.

I admire your wisdom and maturity in trying to tackle this issue at the beginning of your working life Chittisa and feel guilty that at this age I'm still such a hopeless role model!

My topic today is part of a saying about money;

If you look after the pennies the pounds will take care of themselves

Do you have a similiar saying or proverb in your language?

Here are a couple of suggestions from your writing Chittisa:

I still memorize that I spent 2-3 hours in TESCO, just to get some yogurt and biscuits.
Try;
I still remember...

When I stayed there, I always realized that I had lived on mom's money

Try;

When I was living there, I was always conscious that I was living on my mother's money

I would sum up all prices I had to pay in my head.

Try;

I would add up all the prices in my head

Tricia

Lexis and patterns from today:

to feel a bit fed up

a shopping spree

my mood lifted

to be (not very good) at managing something

a strong sense of living for today

to want instant gratification

the topic of something is a sensitive one

to tackle an issue

to be a (hopeless) role model

Dear Tricia, shopping therapy is a well-known issue to phcycologists.It revieals a part from women's character. Maybe lack of attention,state of depression or something else ... I am the opposite side of your attitude to shopping.I always think a lot before buying.It doesn't mean that I don't make mistakes.In my opinion the topic of money should be sensitive in any partnership.In some cases it is critical for surviving.One of two us(I am not sure in that phrase) should think wisely.I know adult people (at the age 55) who can't manage with financing.So it is not a big sin if you can get out of situations and realise the problem. Kind regards! Diema

Hi, I read the weekend plan. This the first time i am writing in a blog site. To me , i also plan the weeked in advance. But it may not be like what i planned. Whatever it may be go according to the change and plan instantly and act to it. Any way we should enjoy some time without any planning. Please feel free and go on the way whatever it happens for some time. Try to behave differently, what we usually do.

Hello Tricia!!! There is a spanish saying about money that says: There is no better lottery than the saving and the economy. I don´t know if it is a good translation and perhaps doesn´t have any sense in english. I must apoligize for all the mistakes I have made but I always try to write in English without looking up in the dictionary. Every body likes money. Perhaps the economy runs the world and somewhat, we are what we have. There are also many ways of living the life. Some people work very hard all their lives and so, they earn a great amount of money but they rarely make a good use of it as long as they don´t enjoy it spending it, but in the neccessary things. There other people that prefer to live for today without care so much about saving money, and they have all they want if they can afford it.I don´t mean that we don´t need to worry about money but we should save it thinking about something to spend it. In my opinion, the first thing to do is pay all the loans we have, we don´t realize of how much money we waste in the bank rates. But at first is very difficult start without help. But as soon as possible we have to spent what we can afford and not what we would like. I said before that The people who save money don´t enjoy it. But as I am writing I thinking about their way of saving money, makes them happy.Perhaps they do it for their future. Anyway there is already one reason to save for.

Hi everyone!I had been so busy over the last 3 days that had no time to have a chat with you. I don't really blame you, Tricia, when you say you went on a shopping free. I know what's like that nice sensation after buying sth that really pleases you. When I was younger I used to do that very often, especially cause my parents could afford it. Nowadays, I must confess that I had to change, even though deep inside I wish I could overspend every now and then. Now, my life has changed , cause I have kids, adolescents ones who have been requiring a lot of investment in their studies. We spend a lot on education with our 3 kids. So right now our priority is on our kids. And I guess that's life, it keeps changing and with the changes come the different priorities.Like you, I try to keep both eyes on the present but every onw and then I take glimpes of the future!! I try to find a good balance!!I force myself to save for the rainy days!!!I guess

Thanks for all your contributions. This blog has now closed and can no longer accept new comments.
