Friends

Today I'm going to start by answering some questions. The first is about my earlier description of my parents' home in England as 'home' too. My primary home is in KL with my husband and children but I also think of my parents' house in England as home simply because they are there. There is a saying,
'home is where the heart is".This is a cliche, in other words a saying that is overused but nevertheless it's true! A couple of years ago my parents sold our childhood home in London and moved to a new retirement house on the South Coast of England. Although I understood why my parents made this move, I was secretly quite upset as I thought that I was losing my home. The move of course happened while I was here in Malaysia. On my first visit, I realised that I shouldn't have worried as the change in environment didn't matter as my idea of home was really just linked to being with my parents.

It's interesting that Chiittisa you write about your concerns that now you are working you will lose the opportunities to spend so much time with your best friends. Yes, you won't have the same amount of time to spend with friends but I don't think that the relationships become less important. All my life I have been supported and helped by my friends. I've made many, many friends through my work Chittisa, so that's something to look forward to. However one of the hardest things about working in ELT and staying in Malaysia has been the constant movement of friends. ELT teachers tend to have very portable careers and after 2 years of teaching in one place often move to another country. Nowadays of course it's much easier to keep in contact through email but I'm often lazy about this.
So that leads me back to your question Chittisa, about time and how to manage it when you're working. I think I'd like some advice on that too!

How to improve your writing? Well I think that you need to write more, so blogging is a great activity. We all need to proof read our work too. Reading also helps as I think we unconsciously acquire patterns of language and style in that way. I'm interested in your views on how helpful correction can be?
A final question to answer which relates to my last post and this is about language. Sev asked;

"...and I’m sure will have a great number of stories to tell us" - Where is the subject for the phrase "will have a great number ..."???

The subject is actually Chittisa which you can find in the previous clause. What has happened is that I have omitted the word "you". This is a common feature of writing. I have assumed that in this situation that the reader can remember the subject.

Today I have highlighted some phrases that are helpful to use when talking about language too.

Some interesting lexis and grammatical patterns from today:

Home is where the heart is

a cliche

on the South coast

the change in environment

ELT= English Language teaching

so that leads me back to your question

to unconsciously acquire

a portable career

in the previous clause

to omit something

a common feature of something

Tricia,well said!!! You said that home is where the heart is.When I left my family and my mum's home in Korea in order to live with my husband I was really upset.I felt like homeless,But the feeling towards to my family and the home has never disappeared .my heart is always full of the memories of the house and missing my family. By the way, the weather has been great here where i live.What's the weather like at this time of year in Malaysia? have a great day!!

Hi Tricia, In your blog on 3rd Oct. your have written about the first job. It is true that the first job which we are getting is the millstone for every one. Many of us may not enter into the job which is new and not at much relevant to their studies. Some of us have chosen the job according to their wishes and likes. After completing their studies some of them ready to wait until to enter into the field which is relevant to their studies. Those who do not succeed in the waiting for the job desert their wishes and prefer as the job comes. This situation arises due to unemployment problem. Every one wants to earn money as early as possible once complete the studies. Each job has taught us many lessons. We have gained many insights from our work. The experiences are counted for our development. So must work hard with great energy and zest. Our aim always should be claiming high. You mentioned that you didn’t have the guts to try to make career in professional theatre. So you joined as drama teacher and become a professional teacher for many years. With all your versatile experience in drama teaching English teaching you must be achieved many things in your life and satisfied women in your profession. In our society teachers are considered to be a Guru. Teachers who are really committed with their services are sacrificing their lives of for the betterment of the students. In now days we find it difficult to see dedicated teachers since education has been commercialized. Thank you for your description about your “HOME”. We are away from our home for different reasons and purposes. But at the good moment our mind will be thinking of our own home. WHICH IS OUR OWN HOME? I don’t have the experience of away from the country even for shorter period. But you are away from your own country for many years. I agree with you your primary home at KL with your husband and children. HOME NOT BUILT BY BRICKS BUT HEARTS. Some times we may not understand the plans and actions of the parents. Their old age make them to take some drastic decision which against the wishes of their own children. I had the same kind of experience with my parents. My mother sold one of our properties in our native place against the wishes of mine even though my father supported me and justified my protest. But my mum did for the benefit of my sister. Mothers always have a soft corner with daughters. Do you agree? I am boring you? Bye till next blog

Dear Tricia, Thank you for your concern. I have been thinking about how to manage my time as well. I was so tired after I got home. it seemed my head was switching off while my eyes were shutting down. But I really fancy writing the blogs,sharing my experiences with you and other students.Maybe I will try spend time worthwhile by writing few sentences while I travel from home to office.If you have any suggession, please let me know. I have realized that I need more practice on writing. My apologize is for you in facing with my broken English. It would be great if you could correct and rewrite my mistakes. Ps."Home is where the heart is" I believe that you will have a chance to get to your first heart somedays.

Hi paulraj! I read your post carefully despite that it is long but I was not able to undersatnd if the teachers are considered to be a Guru nowadays or it was in the past.Do you mean the education has been commercialized in India by western influence or you mean commercialized European and US educational system?.Thank you!

Hi Diema As you asked the teachers are considered to be Guru in the past only. Now a days we find it very difficult see dedicated teachers who are really conerned for the students community. I am not sure whether the education has been commercialised due to influences of others. It basically responsible for the politicians who rule the country. thanks for your on my blog

Hi Tricia! It's a pleasure to read about you , your life and your family. I'm a teacher of English in a secondary school in Italy but my English needs to be improved (you know... you teach and keep on teaching about "present simple...past simple" etc.) and I'm forgetting much of what I've learnt at University. Also the topics you've introduced are interesting; maybe because I feel they are near my sensitiveness in this moment of my life. I have a daughter, who is six months old, and a eigth-year-old son;I've just begun to teach in my school again and my day is so full of things: the children, the school, the house, our friends, other engagements... that sometimes I feel... how can I say in English when there are so many things to do and you don't know how to cope with everything... But I'm also happy because, even if I'm tired, I feel that my life, at present, is deeply full of humanity - feelings-responsibilities- hopes. Bye, for now. Serena

Hi Tricia! Thank you very much for sharing your life and your ideas with us. And I like the way how you handle the correction. It is always polite and very friendly, but it still helps us non-native speakers to learn something. I have studied English at university years ago, and I have just started teaching English at a school for pupils with speech and hearing disabilities. It is a challenging job, since they already have problems with learning their own language and how much more with a foreign language. But they need English if they want to find a job nowadays. I feel at home with my family and my friends. I think friends can help you feel at "home" very much. I have moved a few times as a child and young student and it always took some time for me to feel "at home". Finding friends on whom I could relate helped me a lot.

Hi tricia I have read your life history carefull and beleive that it is full of good lesson and really each person should have such an experience in life to be able to stand on his or her own. feeling for parents and being with is very good but can we always be with them. i think that we should feel them in our heart and as you say home is where , the heart is, so I guess physically being near some one doesn't prove anything but the feelin of hear is the great one, i know many families physically are near but heartily are very far. thanks, peter

Hello,Ms Tricia. It is a pleasure to read about you ,yourlife style and your family.Due to the civil war I recently moved to USA with my family. I was a teacher in my country.In order to getjob in USa I desperatly learn fluent spoken english and written english.what is your advice? Thank you. nana

hi, Ms Tricia,thanks for your excellent article from your starting on this blog. however ,i still have a suggestion on your blog which you can provide recited articles on your blog with MP3, it can improve our reading ,writing and even listening ,as well as speaking. generally speaking ,i think this is a good idea.

Hi Tricia. Like you I'm also away from Home.I moved to this part of the country, right in the middle, 25 years ago when I got married cause my husband is from this region. Although I'm happily married with 3 nice adolescents, I still feel homesick. I miss my parents a lot, who are still alive, and also my sister and all my relatives. When we are young we take their company for granted, but when we get older and realize how ephemeral life is, then we start craving for their company, specially now that my parents are in their 70ies. In fact,I had lots of homes when I was a child. My dad worked for a British company here in Brazil, he was a farm manager for West Company, which had loads of farms around the country, and it was part of the company's policy to transfer its managers every now and then. So I lived in different farms all in the countryside of São Paulo and when I was 9 I was sent to a boarding school in São Paulo to have a better education.I became an English teacher because I love English, in fact I'm a quarter English, my grandpa on the paternal side is English from Mersyside.I don't reckon I'm vey talented but I'm stubborn and this helps me keep moving. Love

Hi, Triccia. I have been reading your blog and other teachers' blogs from BBC. It is an interesting way to practice English and to share thoughts about life. I'm quite enthusiastic about reading it!! I haven't finished my English course yet, but I'd like to improve it somehow. Congrats. Have a nice day!!

Thanks for all your contributions. This blog has now closed and can no longer accept new comments.
