Hole 18 at Royal Troon
Craigend, 457 yards, par four

Ken Brown
By Ken Brown
BBC TV golf commentator

Requires a perfect tee shot more often than not with a driver because of the distance and the prevailing wind.

It almost looks like you can't reach the fairway with 230 yards of waving wheat and hay in front of you as you stand on the tee.

The second shot is played into a very deep green - 38 yards - but there are deceptive bunkers 20 yards short of the green which makes it feel shorter than it actually is.

Out-of-bounds lurks not very far over the back in front of the clubhouse so any shot coming out of the rough runs the risk of getting a flyer and racing through.

The fairway is often sheltered by a big grandstand giving the impression that it is benign when in fact there is 25 knots of wind blowing above the clubhouse.

A fantastic finishing hole with a flag on the last day tucked back and right behind the bunker. Two perfect shots are needed to sneak anything out of hole.

MORE ABOUT THE COURSE AND AREA:

Named after an old farm called Craigend.
