Hole 9 at Royal Troon
The Monk, 423 yards, par four

Ken Brown
By Ken Brown
BBC TV golf commentator

A fairly unattractive hole - you can't see where you're going off the tee.

It's an awkward shot over humps and hollows with a couple of bunkers on the left at about 275 yards.

Most players hit an iron off the tee to play short of the sand and aim left to get a view of the green.

Stray right and your view is blocked by gorse bushes. The second is played to an unsighted, slightly elevated two-tier green.

The putting surface is not guarded by bunkers but if an approach shot misses, the ball kicks off the little mounds into gorse bushes. Often plays the hardest hole on the front nine.

Named after the local village of Monkton.
