Hole 9 at Oakland Hills
220 yards, par three

Ken Brown
By Ken Brown
BBC TV golf commentator

This is just a brutal, brutal short hole.

There is a vicious slope on the putting surface and I would not be surprised if it becomes the hardest hole on the golf course.

You have to keep the ball short of the flag. Anything long and right and it is virtually impossible to hold the ball on the green on the shallow putting surface that measures only 25 paces deep.

Before the 1996 US Open at Oakland Hills, the course officials created a new area on the front left of the green where they tucked the flag.

It was best to miss the green altogether and leave yourself a bunker shot.

The ninth is definitely the hardest hole on the front nine and a legendary one. A three would be a good score.
