"'You can't possibly listen to the wireless and draw at the same time', my mother told me, aged five. I drew on, but still remember the horse running back into the burning stable! (The Archers). At difficult times I've taken my portable radio by the hand & into the studio to trap myself there, within a good programme. It always settled me into work. I don’t have to play tricks on myself now, Radio 4 is a fixture. It stops my attention wandering. When I'm deeply into my work I miss whole chunks, so I relish the repeats."
