"The radio is my constant companion, particularly when I am working. The unconscious process of creating 'mind pictures' generated by the radio inspires me to create pictures using paint on canvas. This picture is 241cm x 193cm, comprises 1540 individual squares and took seven weeks to paint. When working on this scale, the only thing that keeps me sane during the long days in the studio is the constant presence of Radio 4. The diverse range of programmes is the perfect antidote for the intense concentration and sheer physical effort involved in lengthy bouts of painting."
