Carole Andrews
Carole Andrews"The first thing I do in my studio is to turn on Radio 4."

Radio 4 brings my studio alive.

No telephone.

Sip a coffee. Sit. Contemplate work in progress.

Listen to Radio 4.

Drift in and out of the programmes. Radio 4 helps me concentrate.

Begin new work.

Grasp strands of fleeting images in my head, nailing them down into sketches. Abstract sound of Radio 4 seeps into my creative soup. The concentration is long and tiring. From mind's eye to sketch pad is an arduous journey.

Fleshing out the drawings into steel, copper, plastics. Frustrating. Difficult. Physical.

Shout at the radio.

So many problems to resolve. Why am I making this?

Shout at the radio.

Controlling the medium, Manipulative process. Repetitive. Therapeutic. Meditative.

I'm coasting now and listening intently to my best friend Radio 4. You know so much.

Sip a coffee. Sit. Contemplate work completed.

Cold, detached appraisal.

The next one will be better.

Listen to Radio 4.
An Associate Member of the Royal British Society of Sculptors, Carole Andrews is based in Maidstone. She writes: "My constructions reflect my admiration for the natural world. I expand the minutiae of plant and sea life to challenge and dominate the viewer on a human scale. A 5cm developing leaf becomes a 2m sculpture. Coelenterates were first constructed for a gallery commission as an installation, they are based on sea coral. I have since refined my construction techniques and continued making similar forms in a variety of sizes for display in landscape and gallery settings." Her inspiration comes from snorkelling and scuba diving over coral.
