The Super League season is hotting up but attention is beginning to turn to the Origin series between Yorkshire and Lancashire later this month. And with places up for grabs for the one-off Test against Australia in July, competition is bound to be fierce. Several Leeds players are in contention.
I would go so far to say that every British-born player in the Rhinos camp is in with a chance of a call-up for the two-game series. The likes of Barrie McDermott and Keith Senior are certainties but Mark Calderwood, Matt Diskin and Ryan Sheridan have also caught the eye this season. Barrie has probably been our best player. He has led from the front in every game and boosted his reputation as the best front-rower in Britain. Keith, for me, is one of the best centres in the world and his place in the GB side is pretty much guaranteed. Mark has come on a bundle this year and looks very confident. Nothing is a lost cause with him. He chases everything. Matt is playing out of his skin at hooker, but he is only young and I'm sure there is more to come. As for Ryan, he is in top form at the moment. He's like dynamite, able to blow holes in any defence.
And Ryan must be a contender if he continues to play as well as he is currently doing for Leeds. He was the scrum-half in 1999 when Great Britain last played in Australia, so he has the experience. And he has shown his determination by coming back from a serious injury that kept him out for most of last season. I'm sure he will be in David Waite's thoughts. |
