Sinfield: Tension eases
News image

Last week's win over London was the most important of our season.

We have beaten better sides, sides above us in the table, but no victory has been more crucial than the one over the Broncos.

It meant we finished in the top six and ensured our Super League ambitions were kept alive for another week at least.

A lot of the pressure is off us now and that could give us the freedom to throw the ball around

It also relieved the pressure that has been building at Headingley.

Everyone in the Leeds camp has been feeling tense of late, which has obviously had an impact on our performances.

But we can relax a little now we are in the play-offs.

Not too much, though. We want to finish fourth in the table so we can claim home advantage in our play-off match against Hull.

To do that we must beat Wigan at the JJB Stadium on Friday.

A few people are saying that the Warriors have nothing to play for and that we have a great chance of beating them.

It is true they are secure in third spot, but we are still expecting a tough battle.

They may be missing several players - we are as well, don't forget - but the youngsters they have brought into the squad will want to make a name for themselves.

I am really looking forward to the game.

As I've said, a lot of the pressure is off us now and that could give us the freedom to throw the ball around and express ourselves.

Friday's game will be important for another reason.

Our skipper, Francis Cummins, will become the first player to play in every Super League game for four seasons.

It is a massive achievement.

Given the amount of punishment the body takes these days, it is incredible if a player goes just one season without missing a game.

At the other end of the table, Salford and Wakefield are battling for their lives.

It will probably go down to the last five minutes in each game.

It is bound to be very tense, with a lot of players fighting for a job next season.

I will be pretty sad to see either of them go down.

If you ask me, I would let them both stay up but still promote the Northern Ford Premiership champions.

That would cut down on the number of times the current crop of Super League teams play each other.

I like playing against the big clubs, the likes of Wigan, Bradford, St Helens and Hull.

But, if you draw them in the Cup and then meet them in the play-offs, you could be playing one of them fives times in a season.

That is too much in my opinion. And I am sure the fans feel the same way as well.
