Matthew Hayden
Matthew Hayden
Born: 29/10/71
Team: Queensland
Test debut: v South Africa at Johannesburg, 1993/94
ODI debut: v England at Manchester, 1993
Left-handed batsman
Right-arm medium bowler

The burly left-hander's total of 1,391 Test runs in 2001 was not only the most scored by any player that year.

It was also the most ever scored by an Australian in a calendar year.

Hayden has also made four double-centuries in the top order along with partner Justin Langer - a record for an Australian pair.

Hayden, like current team-mate Damien Martyn, was in and out of the Test side after making his debut back in 1994.

But he came back in 2000 to play in the series against New Zealand, then the West Indies.

In the series away to India he finally showed his true potential. A ton and two half-centuries came before he smashed a double century at Chennai, formerly Madras.

After making a century against South Africa in December 2001 he went on to make another eight, including three against England, in just 19 innings.
